I am doubting the drug connection to be honest. As a college student I see many kids smoking marijuana but it doesnt seem to be as dangerous as alcohol.

As for the crack cocaine, well I am a little skeptical. His ex-girlfriend says that and has a restraining order against him. I am not sure if the restraining order is legit or not due to the relative ease it is to get them (or so I am reading by some posters here). Now this ex-girlfriend has a chance to badmouth him in the local papers, of course she will take it.

I think the intention of this article was to associate having large amounts of with a negative image. That seems to be the real agenda. Would they have spent so much time elaborating on the fact he has all this ammo, or the actual alleged crime? Shooting out the windows of his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend and buying ammo with a restraining order on him.

Either way I see this article as another attempt to paint gunowners in a negative light.

but is owning ammunition illegal under a restraining order? I realize that depending on location, firearms might have to be surrendered...but ammo?
Yes, if the restraining order meets the strict criteria applied under 18USC922(g)(8). Under federal law prohibited persons may not possess firearms OR ammunition. If you're a felon (18USC922(g)(1)), mental defective(18USC922(g)(4)), under a DV restraining order (18USC922(g)(8)), etc, and have a round of ammunition it's the same as having a gun.

Contrary to the BS you will see some people spout, any old restraining order does not trigger the prohibition under 18USC822(g)(8). It must specifically protrect and intimate partner or child, and it must specifically protect them from violence. The wife getting a TRO to keep the husband from accessing the bank account won't trigger prohibitions under 18USC922(g)(8).

The Fuel and Fertilizer scares me--you don't use that for self defense or SHTF! Big deal on the ammo. Although this guy was a little off obviously.

It depends upon the fuel and the fertilizer. Did the dude have any seeds? Today everyone is programmed to think the worst. Did he have the appropriate blasting caps to detonate ANFO? I am sure if they were there, it would have been made note of. ANFO does not go off easliy.

I would be prone to stock a few hundred gallons of diesel and some decent fertilizer. Why? To grow food!

I would bet that if I had my ideal stocks, the media would blow up, all out of proportion, the ammo and guns I had. And the fuel and fertilizer. Then never mention the seeds and farming supplies.

I wonder, how many times has this been done? The Sheeple do not like the "sane ones" who prepare. It rocks their boat of delusion. "Sane ones"may be a little squirrelly, but it is throughout nature. Preparedness, is not something the lax appreciate.

Those among us, who prepare, should do it quietly. They should be friendly and non-confrontational at all possible times. Drawing the wrong attention is not a wise thing to do.

If the reports of threats and intimidation are true, this dude was entirely unwise and self defeating.

Those who prepare, are not the norm. They should realize this and prepare for the "persecution" by the norm.

A partial translation of this report

This story is overflowing with the stench of BATFE corruption and liberal media bias.
The leftist media is so bad that everything they say must be filtered to the reveal any truth. I offer a partial translation.

“A tip that Rieder was “stock piling large quantities of fuel and fertilizer” the caller was worried the materials could be used to make explosive devices.”

Translation: Federal Officers had no credible source of incriminating information regarding the targeted citizen so the loosely accurate and or completely fabricated details were attributed to an anonymous caller.

“ATF’s Project Disarm Task Force had been investigating him since mid April.”

Translation: ATF’s Project Disarm the American Public Task Force has been targeting him for months.

“During a search of the home two days later on April 19, officers found "large quantities" of ammunition, as well as a handful of radio, car parts, batteries, plastic sheeting and flashlights, according to the affidavit. Inside Rieder's garage, officers found "several" 25-gallon drums filled with gasoline.”

Translation: During a search of the home two days later officers found NOTHING ILLEGAL. ATF agents did however find ZERO large quantities of fertilizer.

“Staff writer Joshua Stowe contributed to this report.”

Translation: Staff writer Josh Stowe contrived this misleading report.

I wouldn't be too concerned about Project Disarm. I just read up on them, they do little to nothing.

Not to mention, if you're legal and so is your stuff they shouldn't come knocking anyways.

hmmm...

Maybe the anonymous tip came from the dad after his son was threatened. Wasn't he the owner of one of the stores involved? It is amazing what can trigger a search these days...angry ex-anything that's capable of asking for a TRO...
The fuel and ammo sounds reasonable...the threatening behavior is enough to trigger the process...There are rules for storage of fuel in certain locations...There are rules for those that have TROs in place...
Keep yer' head on straight and yer' mouth shut...geez... rauch06.gif

Carefully Worded Slant? Probably

Notice the wording and punctuation in this part of the report.

During a search of the home two days later on April 19, officers found "large quantities" of ammunition, as well as a handful of radio, car parts, batteries, plastic sheeting and flashlights, according to the affidavit. Inside Rieder's garage, officers found "several" 25-gallon drums filled with gasoline.

it's handful of "radio" comma "car parts" which in itself does'nt really make sense but when read normally at speed most will take this as "radio car parts". As in parts to detonate a bomb remotely. Mistake? maybe, but more likely deliberate
attempt to mislead.

My previous post was a little tongue and cheek but I'm just trying to point out how deliberate slanting of media reporting is used every day to mislead the public. If this story would have been written with the intent to just report facts and INFORM the public you would likely have a completly different opinion of this case.

crack smoker

One thing that sticks out as maybe "sour grapes" to me is this "ex g.f." stating he had smoked crack since he was 15. IF that was true, i would wonder about her also as she had been dating a man with a record of crack addiction that dated something like 23 years, yet she continued to date the man? Also, if she would deny "sharing" his addiction, could she give an honest answer as to how she was aware of this substance abuse over those years? Just maybe she saw this as a way to " remove" him from her life. I've seen, heard, and been a part of a woman's wrath over a lost love and very aware of some of them being vindicative as he...!!!

What I love is that we have our usual stellar example of journalism, which we will all agree is lacking in the "relevant facts" department. We then have several posters who are just assuming that he's being persecuted because he is "prepared", and being investigated by the ATF for no reason.

Newsflash: if the story doesn't give us enough to go on, factually, it doesn't give us enough to go on, fancifully.

Is it possible that the ATF just heard this clown had a bunch of ammo and some fertilizer and just decided to harass him? Possible.

Isi it also possible that the ATF and local police had been alerted by credible witnesses to him making threats (read: criminal activity), conducted a criminal investigation, issued a search warrant and the newsies are just feeding on the amount of ammo (80k, my gosh!) to get headlines? Possible.

You decide which is more likely.

Mike

I would guess 10% of the guys here are likely just like this guy.. I know so many redneck hick shooters that are always stinking of beer, and have alot of $$$ in guns and stuff...hell half the time they got empty beercans in their trucks/cars(I always look..I'm the judgmental type)

Which would indicate the dude had serious problems "Security/logic wise". I still see ways to indicate the dude was "set-up".

Guess what, if I was on his jury, they would need to do some serious proving, way beyond what the story had. The System still says presumed Innocent until proven guilty. At least the last time I was on a jury, it was stated as so. The Media has ruined its share of Richard Jewells.

Look at the whole picture, it smells. Look at the dude, maybe he is an unpleasant jerk. Being an unpleasant jerk is not supposed to be illegal in all ways.

The thread is about the Media, not the dude.

i love when thinking the world is going to flood and were all going to die is called "global warming" and people get violent when you doubt it. even though its only happened once before if some books are to believed

but
"believed that the world economy was going to crash and society would become violent,"
is insane despite it happening on small scales often and global scales called "wars"

You are right, they shouldn't....if we lived in fairytale world that was full of honesty.

We don't, we live in the real world and that real world includes Fed agencies that are top heavy with micro managers jockeying around the halls for congress looking for more and more money from the public trough. To justify this never ending need for more funds they need ever increasing numbers of "criminals" to investigate and persecute to justify asking for more and more money. Its a viscious circle that drags more and more honest people into the maelstrom of government scrutiny. Any honest citizen that stands out from the crowd in any way is fair game for the microscope. And the very act of being investigated is frequently enough to trigger an experience from hell at the hands of our "public servants".
