I bought a old used model 60 several years ago and have beat the snot out of it as my coon gun their industructable and will shoot anything you can't beat em in my opinion.

i like the box mag thats the only thing i can think of that imo is an advantage over the tube fed but thats just me get what ever feels right to you. i have shot both and they are both good for the smaller critters:D

I am a Ruger honk, I love them. but for out of the box accuracy and reliability the 60 has the 10/22 beat. However, I do not like the tube magazines, never have, never will, the only time I like tube mags are on lever actions.
In the areas where the Ruger is better than the marlin, maintenance, if something goes wrong with the 10/22 it's stupidly simple to fix. And when something does go wrong with the Marlin it's a PITA to work on. Another bonus to the Ruger, detachable magazine, while the Marlin holds 14 rounds, 4 more than the Ruger, you can buy extra mags and easily drop a new one in, and they are faster to reload.

And if you are handy at all with hand tools you can make the ruger trigger absolutely sweet, for free.

Marlin 60, unless you want to play with it a lot. The 10/22 is like an erector set. You can make it into just about any configuration that you want. For my money that says stick with the Marlin.

Marlin 60. Way more accurate than a $200 rifle should be. Only reliability issue I have had on mine was a few FTE when it was really really dirty. And even then it was 1 round out of every 50-60 rouds with cheap (dirty) Remington Golden bullet pack from wally world.

If you want a project, the 10/22 is your choice.

If you want a good no-hassle plinker, the Marlin 60.

I sold my 10/22 and bought a Marlin 60. I have other nice .22's; I had no desire to throw money at a 10/22 to make it worth using. The 60 is a fun, reliable, accurate gun straight from the box, and, though it's my cheapest gun, it's a favorite gun.:)

Neither! I'd pick a Remington 597. I prefer box mag to tube mag, the nicer sights of the 597, and the 597 feels a bit better in hand for me.

Did I mention I hate those tube mags? PITA to load. Most likely trading in my Henry just because of that tube mag. Kills all the fun of shooting extended sessions. Don't mind the centerfire tube mags that you load from the receiver, though.

*edit* Forgot to add that if I wasn't going for semi-auto, it'd be a CZ 452 of some variety.

I have never had a 10/22, but love tube magazines and love my marlin 60. BTW, you can mod a 60, but there just aren't a lot of aftermarket parts for it. I have an old one I cut the barrel down to 16.25". Cut the tube down and repositioned the tube 90 degrees to the left if you are looking at the action side. This helps a lot in the woods when reloading the tube, if you miss it gets caught in between the barrel and the magazine instead of falling to the ground. Re-crowned barrel and camo painted. I am going to get some hi-vis sights to put on it and call it a day.

Nero,
You will be happy with the Marlin 60. It is a squirrel killing machine. Very accurate (even with the cheap bulk stuff), super reliable, and takes a lickin and keeps on tickin. I bought one about 5 years ago, and I am thrilled to death with it. Buy a Spee D loader http://www.cabelas.com/prod-1/0012788222343a.shtml and get after it.

Thanks for all of the helpful/informative replies. I'm going to get the Marlin model 60.

You won't be disappointed with your decision. Get it then save up for a nice lil 39A and you will be equipped for rim fire bliss.

I have them both.

My Model 60 is way old, given to me by my grandfather. I have no idea when it was made, and there is no serial number on it. The old guy told me he "killed enough stuff with it to fill a dump truck." I have no doubt. When I first got it, it was so caked up in filth that it literally took me hours to clean it. It was unreal how dirty it was, but it functioned fine. It's plenty accurate. The aftermarket high capacity magazines don't work. The trigger is adequate.

My 10/22 is not very old at all. I have the "Wal-Mart Special." It's a 22" stainless barrel with no band and a nicer stock, only available at Wally World. I really like it, although the new plastic trigger guard irks me (all but the high end versions have this now, Wal Mart or not.) I have a Leupold Rifleman 2-7x33 on it. It is very accurate (which seems to go against most people's thoughts on 10/22s) and I can put as many rounds as I wanted to into a dime at 50 yards. The aftermarket high capacity magazines do work. The trigger is terrible. It feels like I am playing a damn carnival squeeze game every time I fire it!

Between them, I think it's about a dead even draw. The Marlin has a better trigger, might still be all metal, and is a little more classic. The 10/22 has customization and high capacity magazines.

I have a 10/22 , my Dad has a Marlin 60. Honestly, I prefer his rifle, and so does my wife.

On a side note, I have found that the 20 round BK mags are not very reliable. I have nothing bad to say about the tubular magazine fed Marlin 60.

My old Marlin 60 shoots shorts longs and long rifles.
Do the new Marlin 60s do that too?

The shorts are kinda quiet.

10-22

I have had to fix my buddies marlin a couple of times. I think he puts dirt in all his guns because I have had to fix pretty much every gun he owns. Since this is my experience with the marlins (I am not sure if it was a 60 or not, but it did have the tube loader) I will put in my biased opinion toward the 10-22. Why? Simply because I can shoot pennies at 10 yards with mine and when I run out of bullets all I have to do is grab another mag and shove it in and I am good to go. With the tube feds, you HAVE to reload one by one when you run out. The 10-22 has the 25, 30, 50, and 75 round mags (theres probably more but I have never seen them) and you can have as many loaded ones as you are willing to buy. The 10-22 is no longer the "cheap" 22 any more though. I bought mine used and "broken." for $120 about 3 years ago. I moved a spring from one side of the trigger pin to the other side and fixed it. I have since put a stainless barrel on it (just for looks) and am very happy. Enjoy whatever you get.

Regarding the Tubular Magazine Inconvienence... I picked up one of these bad boys at Cabela's here in Buda, TX (or you can order it from their site) and haven't looked back since. Easier to load than a box magazine, and you can load 15 into the rifle almost ass fast! I use it with my 552 Speedmaster and Model 60, and it works like a charm.

Model 60 FTW! (But damn is that Speedmaster smooth and straight shootin')

10/22 they are both great guns but i hate tube mags this is coming from a guy that owns 1 .22 and its tube fed the only reason ive still got it is sentimental value

Fuzzybunny; if your mod 60 shoots and cycles shorts... lets just say you have a well worn, well broken in mod 60... dont' ever break it.

FMJMIKE, I've got one just like yours. I bought it new that way. Beautiful gun.

A couple weeks ago, my brother and I went to the range. He took his Marlin 60 and I took my Ruger 10/22. We shot for about an hour and I could not tell the difference in our groups. Sometimes his would be a little smaller and sometimes mine. For the most part, they were about the same. So, I have concluded that straight from the factory, the accuracy is not really much different. It is all in which one you like.

I have had 3 10/22 and have now an AMT heavy bbl 'small game hunter' I payed a pretty penny for that I'm quite fond of.
some years back I got a Marlin 60 for trade some welding I did and I sold it to my nephew cheap as a project. he took it apart and cleaned all up, put a 4X Simmons on and now practices off hand at 50 yards on walnuts. rarely misses - it's a good shooting rifle.
it's pretty much a toss-up. to me seems the Ruger is slightly quicker handling and faster loading with spare mags or extended, the Marlin tighter grouping and better looking.
can't go wrong either way I suppose.
