The THR 1851/1860 Club

Follow up question on proof marks/date codes. I recently picked up a Pietta 1851 that has none. The cylinder has the PN black powder proof mark, but the frame and barrel are blank. The barrel does have a date stamp of 2020 under the loading lever, however.

The 1858 I bought early in 2020 has all of the appropriate proof marks and a “2019” barrel stamp under the loading lever.

Is this common/normal enough? Or just an irregularity in the 2020 manufacturing process? I’ve read that kit builds are often missing these marks, but this is a finished, new-in-box imported by Traditions.

There have always been anomalies with proof markings.
I don't think that we can be sure what kind of changes have occurred during the entire Covid crises at the company or at the proof house, but we can imagine.
Whether some markings were left off as a matter of expedience or simply due to a forgetful or overworked employee is anyone's guess.
Or they could have made either some temporary or longer lasting changes regarding how they will mark revolvers from now on.
Maybe where they mark guns is more flexible then we know, possibly due to the crises or temporary staff or regulation changes.
Or maybe it was a kit gun that made it into the regular production line.

But unless we have more information showing a new pattern of proof marking, IMO it's fair to say that it's due to the Covid crises.
Anything is possible.
Thanks for bringing it to our attention and welcome to the THR black powder forum.

Hopefully it's not too late to join the 51 Club here... While not new to BP I am pretty new to C&B Revolvers and over the last couple of years I've somehow managed to find myself with 3... A pair of 51 .36 Pietta Navies and a 58 Rem NMA also Pietta... Not exactly clear why you want Date codes but the 2 Colts are CU and 20 which I thought was a bit odd since all the other codes are in a letter format and the 20 wasn't... Well, no one can say it wasn't an "interesting" year... Anyway here's my Trio... 20210130_204237.jpg

Several years ago I bought this pair of 51 Confederate Navy 44s at a Cobela's black Friday sale for $308 out the door for the pair. The salesman even found consecutive serial numbers.

They shoot great!

Then in mid December I ran onto a pair of Pietta 1860s at a gunshop. They were made in 1996 but looked unfired. I just got done making new walnut grips for them.

No idea when it was made, was a gift last year, Pietta 1851 Navy 44. I love shooting it, but need to get it fixed by a resident wizard if I can squeeze the nickel until the Indian squeals. I load light, 15 grains of holy black. I have no idea what a "defensive load" might be with a Hornaday 454 round ball, especially in a brass frame.

My Pietta 1851 navy. It is becoming my favorite pistol to shoot. 23g of 3f with a soy wax pill over the powder and a .375 ball on top.

Love the wood grips that came on my Old Silver 1860 Army by Pietta, it changes in different lighting from real dark to lighter and you can see into it if that makes sense. Kinda holographic

Yeah those grips are beautiful! They definitely have some sort of 3D effect going on with them!

Thanks for sharing them with us!

Thanks! I've done a lot of stock work but never made a set of one-piece grips before. The grips on one gun was nice. The other was poorly fitted. Both had that awful hard finish. Before picture.

Can you go over the process of fitting the grips to the grip frame? Did you sand the wood and metal together and reblue the grip frame?

Thank you. Here is another example of how they change depending how light hits them. They are real unique, 20220130_144219.jpg I've never had wood grips quite like this. I had the pistol for like a year before I noticed they change colors in light. Always thought they were just dark
