Underrated EDC handguns?

My G36 fits my hands so weirdly, but it shoots so well for me. Too bad it has the red headed step child of Glock magazine selection.

A great gun for those that like what it offers. :)

Feels nice in my hand but suffers from the pinky pinching syndrome of its bigger brother (Glock 30) and is thinner in my hand and therefore harder to control to boot.

Always wanted to like it but it just never quite worked out, just like it's fatter Glock 30 sibling.

Why they couldn't have gone with a full, solid, grip of and a flush fitting mag instead of the weird hybrid grip is beyond me.

Glock 36. Light, slim and reasonably soft shooting it's criticized for capacity but I think that's because it's always compared to the g30. It's my favorite 45acp pistol.

I put a HYVE technologies +1 bumper on mine. It makes a big difference. If I'm not rolling with a wheelgun it's my G36. Hands down.

Agree. The 36 should have had a full grip.

Mine used to give blood blisters on the pinky until I installed the Pearce +0 grip extensions.

Wouldn't have been a problem with a full grip and a standard designed magazine baseplate. Did I say that twice? Pretty much.

Plenty of Taurus, Charter Arms and other small revolvers out there that work well for very good used prices. Two weeks ago I picked up a near new Charter Bulldog .44 for $299.

I think a snubbie loaded with .44 special is an excellent alternative. That round has ballistics similar to .45 ACP and if you have to shoot without hearing protection it's probably not gonna cause hearing damage like the high pressure rounds might.

I would say "current fashions" rather than standards. Whenever the subject of a mouse gun or an "inadequate" caliber comes up someone points out that those who denigrate them are never to stand in front of them. The RNL bullet is another example. Revolvers seem to be somewhat out of fashion, people cite their limited capacity, slowness in reloading, somewhat more difficult to conceal. The late great Bill Jordan said the 38 Special is the most powerful caliber the average man-i.e. most of us-can hope to master and Jeff Cooper spoke of the Combat Mindset. Which to me is to go from Joe Ordinary to Charlie Askins in a flash.

As we are in odd times (and with firearms and ammunition flying off the shelves like nobody's business), some new gun owners may be left with slim pickings for their first firearm; particularly handguns. With this in mind, it got me to thinking about some lesser considered EDCs. What would you consider to be an underrated EDC type of firearm?

To me, it would be any number of the Iver Johnson top break revolvers. Despite the fact that they are an older firearm, I feel that (if loaded correctly) these would be a decent EDC if it was all one had. Also, an honorable mention to the H&R 732.
What about these? 12-15 rounds of 380, depending on whom you ask. And they're actually available right now for 400 online.

Also these, 15+1 of hot, hot 32 ACP:

I've been carrying a Charter Bulldog since October or so. For a while the bullets looked big and fat. Now they look normal-sized and 38's look puny. :)

I pretty much have what I need but if I were buying in todays market on a limited budget I would look hard at the Turkish offerings (Canik & Sar). Years ago I had a Star pistol that I really liked. The biggest downside to one of them would probably be finding magazines & parts.
Prices have been insane lately. I actually saw an online retailer selling the S&W SDVE 9 & 40 pistols for $440. A little over a year ago they were around $275 brand new in box.

I'd be forsaking my screen name if I didn't pop this in here

Though, to be honest, I'm not sure there so much underrated anymore, and I haven't seen one in stock anywhere in quite some time. But 10 years ago, that was my first pistol, and it served its purpose very well

Pretty much anything in .22LR. Taurus PT/PLY22, Beretta 21A, Iver Johnson TP22, Phoenix HP22A, and any of the H&R, IJ, Taurus, Rossi, or Charter Arms revolvers.. etc..

The key to the G36 is sanding down the "golf-ball" hump off the back-strap.

Makes a 'uge difference on the grip of this outstanding and under-rated EDC pistol.

Moves the pivot point down to below the center of the lower finger groove, so even moderate grip pressure on the upper finger results in good contact with the web/backstrap.

KelTec PF9. People seem to love them or hate them. I've had good luck with several KT firearms. The PF9 goes in my fanny pack when bicycle riding. First line of defense, mostly for farm dogs running loose, is pepper spray which would work on two legged as well. Where I ride, there are more dogs out and about than people.

Ruger LCP or Kel Tec P3AT.

considered a bit passé in carry circles these days since there are now 9s with more capacity than before, and they aren’t fun range guns for many. But they’re very concealable, pack a very respectable self defense wallop, and shoot just fine at “don’t come a step closer” distances.

We’ve got a pair of Kahr CM9’s. You rarely hear or read about the Kahr’s, but IMO, are pretty underrated semi-autos. While they are not our primary EDC’s, they were for a while! I went the Springfield direction, with my wife going Sig. In times like these, if I needed a carry gun.....I certainly would not overlook the Kahr handguns! memtb
