Well, as it happens I WOULD describe .30-'06 as vastly more powerful than .308. It's a matter of the .30-'06 being in the same company as other "full battle rifle" cartridges. .308 doesn't quite measure up among that company, so even though some ballistics values are not a country mile below .30-'06, I would place .308 in a different league.

I know this is kind of a digression from an already beat to death thread, but I'm not sure I follow the above statement if we're talking about actual military spec loadings for either cartridge (which are the only loadings in which either cartridge has seen any significant service as battle rifle cartridges). The overall difference in performance between M2 ball and M80 ball is something less than 7%, which doesn't really seem to be in a "different league."
