Kestrel/Q-Lock:

Look back a ways in this thread for the pictures I posted of my Akita. He was a great family dog. Less of a problem with strangers than my GSD, too. They're all different, of course.

Legend is that in old Japan, the Akita would be left with the kids as a babysitter when the parents went out to work in the fields. I think the key is to raise them with kids from puppyhood and NEVER let them get confused about who's the boss.

I need to not write after a days work. I was looking at my spelling and stuff. weak, sorry.

I am working an Akita now. He is a ball of fluff that belongs to a Fireman we know.

They are strong brave and if trained early fine. A little aloof. The well bred ones like there ancesters are very good. The Japenese used them as baby sitters in the old days. The built statues to them. I have heard the same bite storys on Akitas. But I dont take stock in breedism. The one I am working is a baby. White with black stockings and mask. His name is Shogun. They need to be treated with less corrections then most dogs at first. And they tend to only do what they enjoy. Males like to fight. That can be curbed. They are protective as hell. The bitches more so. I dont fault a dog for liking to fight. Back when I was in my twentys, I liked to fight more then eat.

Not a green handlers dog!

11 month old boerboel needs a jumpp start

Stevo, I wanted to ask you a question. I have an 11 year Rottweiler and a 11month old boerboel. Both males. Being in his twilight years I don't expect or require much protection out of the Rott. Strange noises in the house, he's never cared, but someone in his back yard, he responds well. He is very easy going but I have no doubts that he'll protect me if he is aware of the threat. This is where I feel there might be a problem; both dogs being aware of a potential threat. My boerboel seems to be taking so much after my Rott which leads me to lean towards the nurture side of the nature vs nurture debate. I see terriers and other breeds, American bulldogs for example, and even smaller dogs that are all over a strange noise in the house. I just want my boerboel to go investigate what that noise is, or even be awaken by a strange noise and check it out. I don't mind checking the noise out, but it sure would comforting to have my dog run in there all bowed up and ready to munch. Can that be trained into the dog or does it have to be hard wired, kind of like a prey drive or something. Is there anything I can do to light a fire under his ass?

Just got a call from my Mom, Neighbor lady down in FLA woke up to a noise, Her miniature poodle went after some guy breaking in to her Lanai, The guy got something like twenty two bites, lost a couple of fingers, all to a dog that might weigh 30 pounds and be 15 inches at the shoulder.

AS THE MAN SAID< IT AIN"T THE SIZE OF THE DOG IN THE FIGHT< IT IS THE SIZE OF THE FIGHT IN THE DOG.

That dog is not expected to make it after it took two knife stabs through the ribs but the guy was busted.

Seperate the two dogs. Lock up the rott. then, have a buddy go too the back door or window.

have your buddy make noises. When your BB even perks his ears or growls a little. Praise him. Say "whos out there," Act concerned. get him to follow you to go look. Tell him he is good boy. let him see your bud. then have your friend run away. When he runs. Tell your BB he is a big brave boy. Give him a treat and repeat in a few days.

He will get the idea and get it quick. BB dogs come from one of the harshes places on earth. they were bred to protect their people from bad men and animals. Like lion bad. You should have no trouble. If you want him to be a real area gaurd. I will advise. I wish all the THR dog lovers were closer. I would start a club.

Dont tell the BB no if he barks at stuff. Its what you want....

Thanks for the advice Steve. Loandr, thanks for the offer I've got my hands full with two.

How do ya get your guard AND lap dog ALL in ONE...

For one, you start DARN young:what:... Actually this is rather frowned upon here at the BB ranch....I keep telling her I KNOW While its REAL cute now....come see me after he puts on another 60lbs. of muscle:eek:....it losses its "Charm" REAL quick;)....None the less Momma and Puppy Bonding WELL:D Cindi knows better, BUT sometimes hes just so darn irresistable. good looking boerboel loandr. I also saw the pics from your other posts. How old, how big, etc.? Assuming your bb is older than mine, how much more growing did it do after the age of a year?

Thank you sir, this is one is just about 6 months and 110lbs. I figure somewhere around 160-170 full grown at a yr or so. They usually grow till about a yr. and half, and then fill out a bit further in Girth as they age., hes a bit smaller than his older brother at same age. Shombay about 170-180 full grown. The other male samson (No blood relation) is about 155. And Boomers sister luma about 140Lbs. It pays to keep them THIN as possible, helps as they age with hip and joint issues as well as keeping them agile.

Doing a bit of hurricane prep:eek: .....Yes these are true working dogs at their best and command (Both verbal and visual) oriented...details to follow...tidying up a bit JUST in case;) . thanks.

No dog, and I mean NO dog, under 100 lbs is going to be a match for an enraged 300 lb schizophrenic or meth-head.

Just in case, it's nice to have the larger molosser breeds-- but only the proven guard dog varieties. There are plenty of big brute dogs that can't be trained for adequate guard duty.

Are you kidding me do you have any clue how much stronger a 60 pound bull terrier or pitbull is compared to a fat guy who does crystal meth. The reason why I use those two dogs as examples are becuase they are always under 100 pounds and just to prove to you that you don't need a dog that weighs over 100lbs to fight an intruder. those two dogs i mentioned dogs could ripp apart a human being from limb to limb. Not a man alive could fight off one of these dogs.

Fighting off dogs

I have a friend of a nephew who was a meter reader of electric meters and had with him some items that would fight off dogs.

Was jumped buy a Pit Bull and received life disabling injuries, was retired off the job. The only reason he survived was he was into weight lifting, very strong, and had a weapon (clipboard), never was knocked off his feet. Very lucky man. Stitch's and bites into the hundreds.:what:

I bred Pit's for over 25 years. They are the best dog in my opinion but they are a handfull. Need good training early on and have to be watched very close. Any sign of disturbance, and they need to be put to sleep. I never had one I could not train to be good. But if they get loose they are killers of other animals.

You can have several and they will get along fine, then one day you will come home and one is dead. Never happened to me, but it has happened to others I know, and fairly often. It is usually with the same people, and their line of dogs. So I am inclined to think it is something they have done wrong in the upbringing of the animals.

A very good book to get is "Pit Bulls and other Tenacious guard dogs", written by Dr Carl Semenic. Another book "The Working Pit Bull" by Diane Jessup is good.

HQ:)

Jeff is ignoring the experiences of the past century and going back to medieval times. His position is comparable to saying you need a .75 caliber matchlock to take down a man and that a .30 caliber smokeless repeater will never be up to the task :D Dogs under 100 lbs. have become the standard for protection work in every K-9 unit on the PLANET, from Europe to the US to Russia. They've been used for combat duty in evey war since WWI, and continue to serve with effectiveness and distinction. They've taken out men of all shapes and sizes, from VC in tunnels to, yes, 300 lb. meth heads from sea to shining sea. But no matter what the evidence says, there are some guys who think you need a dog the size of a black bear to be effective. The dog food bills for those monsters are pretty scary, I'll grant you that ;-)

Does anybody here have any experience with english bull terriers?

English Bullys

My wife's Aunt had 2 Bullys male and female, the male was very protective of his yard and the female very protective of the family. He attacked the lawnmower (while running) and had to be put down. They were great with the family a lot like a pit.

Pit Bull

We have owned several different breeds over the years, but most recently we have pits. My wife bought me a red and white female for my birthday and I fell in love with her and the breed. We bred her and kept the best male and he will clean your clock. Its his backyard and no one elses. We also have a choc. brindle female and she is more aggressive than my first female. When we have company over they are fine, you let them in so they are ok. But we are not at home you dont belong here even if they know you. Now the ruler of the roost is a 12 pound Rat Terrier she keeps them all in line.

We also had a 1/2 great Dane 1/2 Masstiff 150pounds easy. He was very protective of us and our home. My wife went outside on night when he was barking and he came around the house a saw her and nearly put her on the ground. She startled him, she yelled "Its momma" and he dropped tail wagging.
HE was great in the house, had his own sofa he would go lay down and never got up until you asked him to out for the night. He died this past month. Way cool dog.

Neat pics and story - I like the little guy with the glowing green eyes! :D

I had a neighbor with pits and they were great. The problem I saw with them is people want to steal them (that happened to the first one) and they scare the bejesus out of everyone in everyday life. This teenage idiot that owned the dog would let it in front of the house with no leash and it would charge people, trying to be friendly. Of course the peeps didn't know that and would poop their pants. :p

dogs

The little one is the Rat Terrior, out preacher says all little dogs like her are demon possessed. She will bite you! We put her up when company comes over and leave the female pits in.

Great thread

This was definitely one of the best threads I have read in a long time. Being an animal lover, I found this very enjoyable and informative.

I'm interested in Cosmo and Sgt. Steve's opinion on this. I am not a big fan of GSD since I was mauled by two of them many years ago. Several doctors have suggested that I may be producing a scent that antagonized the dogs which caused them to attack. I knew one dog was just plain crazy and not raised properly, but the otherone was a prize show dog. Any thoughts to this? Since then I have never been able to trust a German Shepard.

My best watch dog growing up was a Shar Pei. She wasn't very affectionate, but consistently barked (loud, deep and ferousciously) whenever there was a noise outside close to the house or someone entered the home (including me). My favorite dog was my Golden Retriever. While she was a lousy watchdog and loved everyone I always knew that is someone was putting the hurt on me, she would kill them. She was my best friend, but past away almost 3 years ago. I still miss her dearly. :(

Anyway, my wife is against dogs and cats, primarily because she is afraid of them, but she also doesn't care for the doggie smell. I'm trying to convince her of the importance of a good watch dog and am pushing her toward a Chihuahua. I figure that all I need is for the dog to warn me of something going on and with a Chihuahua, the darn thing is soo small, how could she be afraid of it.

Great thread and love the pictures!

I don't trust show line GSD's at all--esp. not the American ones. The only good GSD's these days are working line GSD's from European bloodlines. The American and British GSD's have been bred in a totally different direction and don't even look like true GSD's anymore. THey tend to be pointy and thin, with back ends sloped so far down they're walking on the hocks. Working line dogs should be closer to the original GSD's. That means smaller and stouter, with larger heads and bigger chests. Less attention was paid to color pattern and more to how they performed. Even today with working lines you get a wider array of coat colors and body shapes. These are sheep dogs at heart, bred for intelligence and alertness, not to look like clones of each other.

I don't know about having a smell that makes GSD's angry. But body language and acting nervous can make any dog suspicious. Unfortunately those who have been bitten tend to exhibit these skittish signs the most which invites more aggression and compounds the problem.

I love the pic of the dogs there. I grew up with a rat terrier and really want to get another as a companion for the GSD's. But I suspect together they would be able to outsmart me. Rat terriers are extremely intelligent little guys, and they all want to take over the world.
