What is your favorite hunting revolver and why?

Revolver, my 4 5/8" .45 colt Blackhawk, but I don't hunt with revolvers. That one is powerful and superbly accurate, though. If I wanted to iron site deer with a handgun, can't think of a better one in my collection.

I handgun hunt with a scoped contender. I cheat....:D

Hi David,

Well - I am torn between two really. First choice would tend to be the 454 SRH - great round and like the gun.

That said, I have now worked up a load in my BFR which is pretty manageable and potent - 1550 ft lbs as againt 1850 ft lbs of 454 - but a 405 grain pill is kinda useful :)

Actually be happy with either on board and 45-70 is marginally less punishing.

Favorite hunting handgun?

That, without a doubt, would be my Ruger OM Blackhawk in .41Magnum. I've carried it in the outdoors since the '60s and killed everything from rats to elk and elk-sized + animals. For grizz however, I'd move to one of my .475Linebaughs.

The .41Magnum is fun to shoot (like about everything else), easy to load for, is accurate in the extreme, and isn't something everybody and their wrinkled grandmother shoots. I'm not knocking other calibers, it's just that I have a real "Jones" for the .41Magnum.:D

My 2/100ths of a dollar

I think my S&W Classic 44 magnum fills the bill for me. I have a 30-30Contender, but appreciate the more portability of the S&W.

7.5 in Freedom Arms in .454, ported, factory trigger job, Leupold 2x mounted in TSOB rings/base. Bought it in early 1989. I shoot Laser Cast 300 gr. bullets in my .454's.

I'm kinda surprised at the responses here -- the hands-down favorite hunting handgun has to be a .22. I hunt deer a couple of weeks out of the year with a handgun, but I can hunt squirrels for 6 1/2 months!

My favorite is my Colt Officer's Model Target -- made in the 1930s.

My favorite handgun for deer is a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt.

With all of the revolvers that have gone through my hands, the one that I have always hung on to is a Ruger Bisley SuperBlackhawk in .44 Mag. I like the Bisley grip frame more than any other, and with the 7 1/2" barrel it balances perfectly for me. I have always been able to get good accuracy out of the .44 Mag cartridge, moreso than any other revolver chambering.

I'm with you Vern. I can't see or shoot well enough to hunt medium or big game with a handgun, so I stick to rabbits when I use my Ruger Single 6 .22 with 2x Nikon scope.

My favorite is a Freedom Arms 454, 7.5" with iron sights. It hits hard, is very accurate (most important to me), can reach out a good long ways if varmints present themselves, and is still comfortable enough to carry around the hills all day. It is, however, too large to be my choice for a non-hunting backpacking trip.

In .22 it is a High Standard GE with 6.75" barrel.

6.5" S&W 610 loaded with DT 200gr. "Beartooth" WFN hardcasts or 200gr. XTPs. WHY? My close second is my 6" 686, but the 10mm allows me to use the caliber I am most fond of and provides a little more juice that the afore-mentioned .357. The N frame soaks up the 10mm recoil very nicely and it's very accurate.

My favorite is the 45 Colt combined with my stainless S&W Mountain Gun. Why? Most deer hunting here in Central Texas is short range (less than 50 yds). The 45 Colt loaded with the 250 grain Hornady XTP-HP at about 900 fps has been great medicine for Texas whitetails. That load hit an 8-point buck last year with enough force to pick his front legs off the ground when it hit him. It got the job done. The 4" N-frame S&W is accurate, has a great trigger, and is easy to tote on your hip all day.

OK, I'm weird. I use a 7.5 barrel Vaquero in .44 mag, or a 5.5 in 45 colt. I can hit 60 yd pie plates all day long with the .44, and the .45 is my woods walker, good out to 40 yds +. I just have this thing for fixed sight revolvers, and finding that perfect load to hit poa at hunting distance. For distances over 60-75 yds, I'm using the encore or a rifle. (until I get my new .308 bbl for the t/c :D ) I envy you guys that can use iron sights over 75 yards....eyes ain't what they used to be. Then again, there's a lot of me that ain't what they used to be....

Nah, you're not wierd, I use a 5.5" Stainless Vaquero in .45Colt :)
Just took my first deer with it this year despite having the gun for 10 years now! It always played back-up, but this time the shot was perfect and the gun was there and now the meat is in the freezer.

Well, much is written about the DA and how great the triggers are on 'em out of the box, but my Blackhawk will rival any Redhawk trigger I've ever yanked. Another thing I like about single actions as outdoor/hunting guns is the strength of them. There's no hinges in the cylinder and it ain't like you need to speed reload the thing out hunting or hiking/camping. Blackhawks and Super Blackhawks are my favorite single actions. If I could afford one, I've heard the Freedom Arms is REALLY superbly well made (original .454 Casull). The old Colt piece makers and clones there off are not as stout and not capable of shooting the heavy loads I load for big stuff safely.

Gunsmiths build some awesome five shooters in some awesome wildcat cartridges from Ruger Blackhawk platforms. The Linebaughs are what I'm thinking of. But, my budget says my Blackhawks are just fine. :D The DAs are fine weapons, just my personal tastes. I like the traditional looks of the single action, too.

Ruger blackhawk, 5.5" bbl, .45 LC with 1.5 to 4X Burris scope. Why? Because I can keep a cylinder full of my hot 300 grain reloads on a paper plate at 100 yds from a bench. Makes me really confident when I limit my shots to no more than around 50-60 yds.

6 1/2" stainless Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 mag. Carry it cougar hunting all the time. Works for me almost as hard as my dogs. :D

I usually pack a 7.5 Inch Ruger Vaquero 44 mag with a Winchester 240gr soft point bullet when I'm 'rifle' hunting.

I've done a lot of hunting with a .22 Ruger mk2 5.5 bull barrel.

But I've also done some 'big game hunting' with an 8 inch Dan Wesson SuperMag in 357 Maximum and 180gr bullets. Haven't fired it 'in anger' though.

I much prefer the balance of the Vaq.

This is what I was toting today, a 9 1/2" Ruger Super Redhawk in .44mag, with a 2-6x Bushnell scope. Its carried in an Uncle Mike's Bandoleer Holster. I've been hunting with this for several years and have taken a couple of deer with it, but nothing today :(

Does my name give a hint?

:D I have killed a number of deer with a T/C Encore but that gun is no match, personally, to my S&W .460 scoped with an Aimpoint 3000. Great weapon!
