What was your first?

My father hated guns. As a kid I never owned a gun, though I did from time to time hang around with friends that were shooting.

Wasn't till I got out of the service and on my own that I got a gun. I came home in Sept and some new friends wanted to go hunting when the season opened. My very first gun at the age of 21 was a Mossberg 500 with a 28" barrel and modified choke that I purchased for rabbit season in 1970.

I knew nothing about guns back then, just safe handling. That shotgun let me down when I went duck hunting. Not long after my first duck hunt I sold the Mossberg and bought a shotgun with a full choke. Would have been nice to know about interchangeable chokes.

Shotgun-Winchester 20 g
Rifle- Winchester 94 30-30
Pistol-Colt King Cobra 357
Marlin mod37 22 cal

My firsts bought with my own money:

rifle-1978, sporterized 1903 with nice wood and a 4x scope(weaver?)

handgun-1982, Ruger Blackhawk in .41mag

shotgun-1982, Fulton SXS 16gauge

My first -
Revolver - Ruger Redhawk 44 Mag. IMG_0174.JPG Autoloading pistol - Raven 25 ACP - IMG_1592.JPG

Rifle - Winchester Mod. 67 .22 - IMG_6892.JPG Shotgun - Iver Johnson Champion 16 ga. Break Open - IMG_1845.JPG Still have all of them.

Wow! Thats quite a cannon for your first revolver.

A bit leery of the Raven.

I had a friend BITD who would cut the tips off rock climbing pitons and sling them with cable loops and try to sell them under the name "Ravens".
When I asked him why Ravens he said, "Because you would have to be a raven lunatic to actually use one."

(I trust 22250Rem that you know the story of the necked down .250 Savage by a wildcatter who trade marked the ".22 Varminter" name only to have Remington come out with his cartridge renamed to .22-250 Rem, and refused to pay him.)

I got into revolvers late. Wish I did it sooner. The Redhawk came into the LGS in a 10 or 12 gun package deal purchase from an estate. Shop owner passed on some of his savings to me. The Raven came to the same shop in 1995 on a trade in. Owner said I could have it for 25 bucks because he didn't even want to stock it. His comment was; " I don't stock junk". I just keep it now because I never see those around anymore. Sort of a "Saturday Night Special" classic. The 22 & shotgun were my fathers; had 'em since my teens. P.S. On the 22-250; IIRC you must be referring to Mr. Jerry Gebby, one of those who played with the 250 Savage case and had the trade mark. Although I'm not familiar with the legal details when Remington made it a factory round.

First shotgun---Remington 11-48 20 gauge---Given to me by my Grandfather when I was born
First rifle---Remington Nylon 66---also given to me by my Grandfather
First Revolver---Colt Frontier Scout---22 LR--- I bought this with yard mowing money
First Pistol---S&W M-41

I still have all of them except the Colt Frontier Scout

1974 - Marlin Golden 39A .22 lever-action rifle - lost due to an incompetent attorney and a LEO with "questionable" ethics in 1989. :fire: :cuss:
1975 - Ruger .22 SA pistol w/ ~7" barrel - traded for an Astra Constable in .380 in 1977 which I still own. I'm still kicking myself for that trade.

My Grandfather gave me a model 60 Winchester 22 Rimfire when I was 12. Still have it. The first 22 that I bought was a Marlin bolt gun that was awesome. Don't remember the model number but it was one of the most accurate 22's that I have owned. That is saying a lot because I have had several CZ's and a model 52 Winchester.

The first centerfire rifle was one of the biggest pieces of junk that I have ever owned, but that is what you get for $20. It was a 6.5 Carcano that was minute of tub. I doubt if you could keep 3 shots in 5 gallon bucket at 50 yards. First real rifle was a Remington 742 carbine in 30-06.

First handgun was a Rohm RG66 22LR followed closely by a model 30 S&W in 32 Long.

First shotgun was a used Westernfield 12 ga pump given to me by my deadbeat dad. The first one I bought was a Franchi Falconnet 20ga O/U. Wish I still had it and the Smith/

I just have no real use for a shotgun. Can’t justify the money.

Maybe in the future.
Everyone should own at least 1 shotgun. It was my first gun only because friends wanted to go rabbit hunting at the time.

I'm not a big shotgun fan only because they seem to specialized for my liking. Presently own a Mossberg 500 Mariner for defense and a Browning Superposed for trap.

My real love though is centerfire rifles and pistols.

I got my first rifle when I was 10, a .Savage / Aunschutz model 64.
First centerfire: Browning B78 25-06
1st non single shot: NM M1a
Handgun: Walther P1

My first:
Shotgun: Harrington and Richardson, probably now known as the Pardner, in 20 ga
Autoloader: Ruger Standard .22LR
Rifle: Ruger 10/22
Revolver: Colt Peacekeeper

I still have 1 of the above. I handed the H&R down, sold (and regretted and replaced) the Standard, and sold the Peacekeeper (no regrets there).

Revolver: Taurus 66 .357. This was sold off years ago.

Auto: Iver Johnson TP-22. This was stolen and then recovered and returned to me. The case number is still visible on the magazine.

Rifle: Winchester 1894 .30-30. Just like Grandpa’s deer rifle. This I still have. A 10-22 followed closely afterwards, and I still have this one as well.

Shotgun: Ithaca 66 lever action, single shot .410. I gave this to my buddy years ago to give to his son as his first gun.

Stay safe.

First agency-issued sidearm: Smith and Wesson M67 .38 caliber revolver, 1987 (and I just replaced it with another one a few weeks ago!)

First "Evil, Scary, Black, Fully-Semi-Automatic Black Assault Rifle with The Shoulder Thing That Goes Up": Smith and Wesson MP15 Sport, 2014.

First rifle given to me by my dad...Ithaca M49.

First guns purchased by me (all circa 1992):

Rifle - Norinco MAK90
Revolver - Taurus 689
Semi-Auto Pistol - Taurus PT92AF
Shotgun - Maverick 88

Rifle - Winchester 189? pump chambered in .22 short.
I bought this at a farm auction in the early 60's for $5.00.

Shotgun - Mossberg (model unknown) bolt action 410.
This was my deceased Father's rabbit hunting gun.

Revolver - S&W (probably an M&P or pre-model 10) in .38 Special.
My grandfather gave me this pistol and a Lee Classic hand-loading set for it.

Semi - A 1911 (made by Ithaca) that was carried in WW-!! and Korea by my stepfather's older brother Acey.
He was an officer of Military Police and had the pistol nickle plated after WW-II

The Winchester was an extremely precise shooter.
When I went into the USAF I gave it to my kid brother.
Who (I was told) promptly traded it for a bag of wacky weed.

The Mossberg was nothing special but functioned well as a shooter.
Back in the mid 70's I gave it to my sister's oldest son.
Who put it in a closet where it still sits to this day.
I don't think he ever fired it even once.

The S&W just disappeared from our house in early 70's.
Mom said it was stolen from our home in a burglary.
I am sure she sold it when I was in basic training.

Ithica 1911 - Just a few years ago I found out that Acey had a daughter who is older than me.
I arranged for her to receive the pistol as an heirloom for her daughter.
She had it restored and told me it still functions very well.

The other "first",,,
Well, we won't go into that. :D

Was it like this one, a Model 80?
I bought it for the sling and swivels and fell in love with the gun. I really dig the rudimentary rear sight. Surprisingly useful. The magazine makes it a fine *hunter* too.

Great rundown on what became of your firsts. Points for getting that Ithaca to such a fine home.

Todd.

No, but thanks for the reply.

Mine had that plastic finger grooved trigger guard so common on the older mossies,,,
It was probably just post-WWII as he bought it right after he got out of the army.

Also mine had a removable choke.

I just remember it being a nice shotgun for a kid,,,
As a youth in rural Oklahoma I knocked a lot of squirrels out of the trees with it.

Correction.

I originally said my first revolver was a S&W K-frame,,,
I got to thinking and I was wrong about that.

My first revolver was a model 189? French 8mm Lebel that I named Margaux,,,
I bought it at a different farm auction for (I believe) $12.00.

lebel.jpg

It came with a sock full of ammo which I shot up in a week,,,
I was so disappointed to find that ammo for it was rare to the point of being non-existent.

But for some reason I kept this old gal and I'm very glad that I did,,,
Two years ago I found that Fiocchi made new ammo for it,,,
My wallet was fat at the time so I scored 550 rounds.

Mine has a manufacture date of 1903,,,
So the gun is 116 years old and still shoots great.

I drag it out once a year around the Fourth of July and fire 25 rounds,,,
I shoot as tight a group with it as I do my K-Frame S&W's.
