Why the hate for the XD?

In a part of Utah that resembles Tattooine.
A while ago I found a used XD-9 service model for $300, got it for my wife, for her primary pistol. It was so new, if it had ever been fired, I couldn't tell. We both love the sucker, shoot it all we can afford.

So on a facebook group of "professionals" someone added me to, I got universally sneered at for saying I own one and like it. I told them I wasn't interested in the opinions of people I had never met, and were neither responsible for my safety nor accountable for my actions. I tell my concealed carry students to try different guns, and keep what works best for them, and no one else's opinion counts more than their gut. (I also let them know, if they grow to not like it, or find something later they like better, they can change, they won't have to pay it alimony.)

They said a Glock is a real gun, XDs are junk. I pointed out that many won't touch a Glock because you have to pull the trigger to strip it. I carried a Glock for years, and I can run one just fine, but I like the feel of the XD better, and I like the trigger a LOT better. I think the XD, like pretty much ALL modern polymer-frame pistols, will last a lot longer than I actually plan to shoot it.

I'm sticking with; "It works for me and my wife, I like it, so I will stick with what works." Is there anything about an XD I should know about?

There are haters everywhere, does not matter what your discussing in the age of social media. Xd is fine, Glock is fine. I recently fell in love with the fns 9c, I like them all.

Everyone has an opinion. If you do not agree, just ignore them. No need to call them "haters". Just shoot what you like and move along.

I have neither XD nor Glock, but of the ones I've shot I much prefer the XD. I was somewhat shocked at the loose fitting of an XDM that I tried, but it still seemed pretty accurate. I'm considering an XD for a full size 9.

Nor should you be, unless and until they've demonstrated some level of knowledge or skill not possessed by you.

Some folks like the XD line. Some do not. As far as I can tell, though, there's nothing inherently wrong with the design. I've only gotten to shoot a couple of them, but I liked 'em just fine.

Too many guys out there drank the Glock Kool-aid and think that generic = perfect. Glocks are solid but boring. Everyone and their uncle has one because the brand is so universally known that some non gun people think all semi automatics are Glocks.

The XD is a great quality pistol that is used by tons of people as a defensive pistol as well as several military and police forces in various foreign countries. Lots of US police departments use them too.

Many Glock fans consider a poymer-frame, striker-fired pistol from any other manufacturer a Glock ripoff.

XDs are not my cup of tea because they don't fit my hand as well as I would like, although they are better in that regard than Glocks. But I have friends who really like them.

I had an XD40 Service years ago and was just thinking today that I'd like to replace it with a XD9 Service. They are great guns and I don't see how they have any shortcomings when compared to Glocks. They have a superior grip and a grip angle that doesn't require you to change your muscle memory. Saying that the XDs are junk is just ignorance.

If you like it, shoot it well, find that it runs reliably, etc., I think you should give zero figs about what some people who likely have never even shot, much less owned, one think.

I had an XD45 for a long while. Liked it but wasn't overly thrilled about it. Would like to see how well my hand falls in love with an XDm though. I like the XD and XDm lines better than Glocks. Both are fine as well as offerings from any other major plant. It only gets irritating when one person overly promotes a brand such as "All pistols should be Glocks. Period." That is just stupid.

I personally don't like the way the XD fits my hand, but I have recommended them to several people. They seem like a solid gun. If I am gonna go generic I go Glock, but that is mostly due to the fact that I've owned a few and still have holsters and such laying around. But I like guns with personality myself, so CZ and ruger revolvers are my current loves. Plus the long standing affairs with S&W wheel guns... but nothing wrong with an XD, especially for $300.

I have an xd9sc and chose it because the grip fit me. I shot glocks, m&p's, xd's, and fn's but always came back to the xdsc. But... They're all quality, reliable guns and reputable manufacturers.
I don't have time for the "superfans " of any gun.
My advice to new shooters looking to purchase: Shoot everything you can get your hands on, and don't rush the decision or you might miss your best choice.
BTW, I'll take my Dan Wesson 1911 over any of those guns for pure shooting pleasure![emoji41]

For what it's worth, the XD line is on the VERY short list of handguns I'd consider owning if I had to carry something other than a 1911. I've handled them, shot them, did own one for a while and recommended the line to someone with similar hand size and shape to mine. They bought a service model (4" barrel) in .45ACP and still own it many years later.

I don't hate XDs, I just don't get excited about them. Maybe it's the whole grip safety thing on a pistol with a safe action type trigger?

Not a Glock fan and never have warmed up to the ergonomics of the XD series (though I have nothing against either brand). Went with the Ruger SR9c as the most comfortable to shoot and having the best design features of the compact 9mm. pistols that I tried.

They have a slightly higher bore axis than some other pistols.
So do Sigs though, and people seem to like them just fine.
They have a grip safety that some find fault with.
1911's have them and appear to still sell pretty well.

I really heavily considered an XD full size of some flavor for my "house gun"

I ended up playing with some CZ's and went that route however. I can't find anything I'd consider a legitimate issue with the XD line up. Heck I still want an XDS 4.0!
I just can't decide between 9 or 45!

Nothing wrong with XD series of pistols. I don't own one myself buy some I know just love them.

Maybe that group should be named mall ninjas? ;) Pretty childish responses that show their own insecurity about their choice in firearms.

I've got both, & i like both. I also have others.. some i like better, but i don't 'hate' any of them.

and you can really make them blow a gasket when you snark that Glock just ripped off HK. :neener: (I am a bad person. I am a bad bad person. I like messing with rabid fanbois)

Haters got to hate. I have XDs. I have Glocks. I also have other flavors of plastic striker fired pistols. Which one I like best is completely subjective and I'd trust my life on the lot of them (or else I wouldn't own them)

Because the truth is, once you got things narrowed down to reputable companies (of which there are MANY) the 'best' plastic pistol is the one that you shoot best.

I had a Glock, it was a fine pistol never had any problems, but I traded it for a XD9 and never looked back. The XD fit better, and stranger than fiction, it put the 9mm bullets downrange just like the Glock. With the addition of a PRP trigger it will stand up against any gun. I've bought and traded just about every brand, and the XD9 is still with me . A very reliable nice shooter.

I also had Glock. Until I tried the xdm. And the Sig. And the HK, And the CZ. All of these brands remain with me. Except the Glock.

Sounds like you got into it with a bunch of snobby fanboys. I like XDs, but shoot a Glock just fine. Like what you like and they can like what they like.

In the long run, it doesn't matter.

P.S. In my experience, people who refer to themselves as professionals, or operators, usually aren't.

I owned XD's: XDsc in 9mm & 40 and a XD 45 compact.
Grip saftey - not necessary, useful or not, toss up.
Higher bore axis than Glock.
Not as easy to replace sights (front) with night sights compared to Glock.
The XDsc had a grip that was just a bit more than two fingers, but not enough for three. :scrutiny:
I liked the 45 compact the best, full grip.
