Your chosen 'MinuteMan' rifle....

I'm seeing an awful lot of "my M1A, my SKS, my 870, and my AR-15 too..."
You guys are going to be carrying quite a lot of a lot of varieties of ammo and mags if your scenario ever went down. Do you really think that is realistic? Of course, maybe I should be asking, "is the scenario realistic". Possible, but not likely, so fantasize away I guess.

Thought I had it all figured out once.

When I was in middle school I was reading a book series called Wilderness-David Thompson, set in 1820-1830s. The main character had a Hawken .60, a pair of what I can make out to be Kentucky or Hawken pistols in .55, a knife and a tomahawk. Perfect for that time.

So I thought of comparable rigs for different times. WWII: Garand, a pair of 1911s, your choice of knife and tomahawk.

Then I thought of what I'd carry now...Browning BAR Lightweight Stalker 270 Win w/ mags-lots of mags, a pair of Glock 20s-because pistols come in pairs, a knife and tomahawk.

but...now I'm starting to rethink my choices I made years ago. I picked the BAR 270 cause that's what I hunt deer with and if you're a good shot you can take most anything in North America. G20 because it is good against people, bears, and zombies with high capacity. And the knife and hawk because I've practices a lot with them. I'd also throw in a Benelli with mag extensions...pump or semi-auto.

This lends to some problems. The 270 Winchester is plentiful enough and should do...expecially since my gun is extremely accurate-dime size at 100. The Glocks will be a problem as when I'm out of ammo, I'm out of ammo. So, I guess I'd replace them with G17 or G34-I hate 9mm but they hold more than a 1911.

I'm finding there are too many factors involved for me to pick the perfect weapons. Where will I be going? Who is the enemy? Military? Looters? Rogue Minutemen? AR/AK/SKS/Mini are all plentiful and so is ammo...but man, its useless on larger game when you are hungry.

Tarvis is correct about the thread. We should all think about the Minute Man concept that our nation relied upon during its birth. If we really had to all muster together in a town square or remote location to repel an invading force, what would we really want to carry. Our decision should not be based on survival in a post apopolyptic scenario (hunting for food, living off the land) but in repelling the invader.

Ammunition supply would be the biggest factor to consider. What ammo would be most prevalent among us? What ammo would be most accessible in stores or even armories opened to the defenders to supply them in the fight?

The threads about our physical limitation in carrying hundreds of cartridges are well put. We can argue cartridge effectiveness all we want, but the best cartridge choice in the world would do us no good when we ran out of ammo for our chosen weapon and no more was around to put in the gun.

Flintlock muzzle-loader. Call me old school.

Jk, I would really want an M1A/FAL/PTR-91. This is because since civilians can't have automatics (well they can but you know....) and shooting a battle rifle semi auto is the most effective method. If automatics were more readily available then I would go with an AK or M4 (probably 6.5/6.8).

I forgot to mention I would also carry around my 700 because then I can sortof snipe and 30-06 ammo is available almost anywhere. I think in a minute man situation all the militia would probably set up their hunting rifles for an ambush then after most of the enemy is eliminated or getting too close then switch to our EBR's

My savage 114 in 30-06 with my nikon 6-18 scope

I'll be 400 yards behind everyone else in a ghilie suit

But what would you guys do with all your other guns? Would you pass them out to neighbors, or would you lube em up really good and burry them in crates or bags in areas you are going to frequent?

If we get occupied... I'd see taking a lesson from insurgents in Iraq...

Improvised E.O... & scoped .22 rifles for harassing patrols(a wounded soldier does more damage/cost more resources to an occupying army than a dead one) and a small .22 revolver for close up work on small patrols (2 or three max. enemy soldiers at point black close range, or officers walking about town buying coffee/services from collaborators)...

Heavier stuff buried someplace outta the way...

Avtomat Kalashnikova (even though it wouldn't be "avtomat" unless I had a class III license). With a red dot ultimak setup. I really would like to have an M1a, but the gun itself and the ammo are too expensive.

My Glock 22 will get me safely to my DPMS, ammunition, and other rifles. The "panther" will be the primary weapon from there.

My SKS is my go-to rifle, with my S&W M59 as my sidearm. I'm familiar with both weapons (I carry the S&W) and I have 200 rounds of x39 on stripper clips. They take up little room and aren't all that heavy. Stripper clips are better than mags in some ways.

In what way is an overweight, slower handling weapon with overweight ammunition and a small practical basic load superior to an AK or M4? Target acquisition and successful engagements on the battlefield are pretty much just statistical static past 300 meters on real battlefields (they seem to be much easier shots in Militia fantasies for some reason), so what purpose does a weapon firing a round that compromises <300 meter performance to get longer range performance really serve?

both my AK and my best AR, however much ammo I can jam in a backpack along with cleaning kits and some food. I need to get a sling for the AR though.
