I have quite a few guns I would consider my Grail. Some are for carry. I had such a hard time finding a PPS M1 9mm that it was my grail for awhile. Some I would never shoot, like a Nazi Luger. My taste for a grail gun right now would either be a Colt Lightweight Commander rail gun or 10mm 1911 I build for myself.

I have some of them:

Sig P226 SSE. Finally got one home. I bought one years ago and was offered too much money to turn down before I got into the car.
S&W 5906. EX PD gun, doubtful it was ever carried, in the box with paperwork, with the officer's name and badge number on it. Found him online in like 30 seconds. He said he carried the gun I have now to funerals and ceremonies, but never on duty.
S&W 4506 I sold one that was a little prettier, but the one I have now shoots better.

Wanted:
Sphinx AT 2000 S. Shot one once, and have wanted one ever since.
HK P7M13. I kick myself for not buying the one at the LGS. Too expensive then, now would be CHEAP!
CZ SP01 with CGW o CZ Custom trigger work.

today - a Mini-14, with a walnut stock stained darker to look old, blued finish or parkerized, with the M1 style cutout in the stock for the oiler and sling.

In the four more popular calibers (.22rf, .38 Special, 9mm Luger and .45 ACP), Smith & Wesson has made "dream" pistols chambering them all:

.22 rf-S&W Model 41
.38 Special-S&W Model 52
(9mm Luger-S&W Model 952
.45 ACP-S&W Model 945

A Luger in .45 ACP, yep one of those million dollar guns.

There was a guy who made replicas of those; they're a *bit* cheaper than the original ones... I think someone else built some in .45 too, but I don't remember who offhand.

As far as a "dream autoloader"... I want something designed from the ground up for concealed carry. It should be plastic and stainless steel, and rounded like an old bar of soap, with no corners, levers, external hammers, or other projections. A couple of square notches milled into the top for sights would be fine. I want an absolute minimum of openings to admit pocket lint, Cheeto crumbs, sweat, or rain. I'd look favorably on some kind of sliding gaskets or labyrinth seals on the moving parts, and maybe an O-ring seal on the magazine. It should come apart easily, preferably without tools, for cleaning.

I carry all the time, and my carry guns deal with sawdust, grass clippings, blown dirt, grinder dust, paint overspray, gallons of sweat, occasional rain, and getting banged into things. Holster wear and sweat ate the finish off long ago, and I'm starting to see enough pitting to know that at some point the guns will no longer be safe to shoot. Even daily cleaning can't keep the corrosion at bay, and the sharp edges not concealed by the holster wear holes in my shirts.

It's one thing to move from an air-conditioned house to an air-conditioned car, then dart across a shaded parking deck to the air-conditioned elevator to your air-conditioned office. In an outdoor environment in the South, things are *much* less friendly to carry guns.

I don't want a fine 1911 or Hi Power for carry. I want a soulless McGun that's reliable enough to depend on, is convenient to carry under my conditions, and cheap enough that when it has a problem I can just throw it away and get another, like any kitchen appliance.

There's a whole industry of "concealed carry pistols" now, massive double-stack monsters with spikes and levers all over them, about as "concealed carry" as the last "portable TV" we bought, which had a 27" CRT, weighed close to a hundred pounds, and was "portable" only be virtue of a recess molded into the top that was a kindasorta carry handle, and flexed the top alarmingly if you actually trieed to pick the TV up with it.

The one I would probably get the most use from would be a ZEV O.Z-9

I want this to be a real pistol. (It’s an air soft based on a Mauser). I love the look of it... single action trigger. Mmmmmm
I’d elongate the magwell a bit since there’s no need to limit the cartridge size to what would fit inside the grip... maybe chamber it in .30 carbine, 44 automag,or some such intermediate round. (Edit: chambered in a rimless .357 magnum)
Oh yeah.. and it would be built by korth or wilson combat and given to me at no cost

In line w/ a similar thread in the "revolver" sub-forum; let's hear it. Your dream Autoloader. Your "Holy Grail". Whether it's a production gun, or a dream gun, let's see it.

Mine is (for now) a SS slide/frame 1911 Officer, "retro hammer", traditional safety, upswept beavertail grip safety, chambered in .32 Automatic; with fixed white dot combat sights.
M1 Garand semi auto 30-06 and magazines for it that are a $1 a piece or less...oh, never mind. Those are for real.

44 auto mag? 30 carbine? Why not a 357 auto mag of sorts for it since we're on the full custom scope of things? Then it could easily be double stack and still pack a pretty good punch over the 30 carb. Just a little food for thought.

I got mine a long time ago. A .44 Auto Mag along with a 10" .357 AMP barrel.

"And if properly used, it can remove the fingerprints" Harry Callahan, Sudden Impact

I love the scene at the amusement park where he's silhouetted and swings the gun out where the bad guys can see it. I love this pistol and have wanted one ever since the film came out.

For those not familiar with its history, here's a video about the gun itself:

For years I lusted after a S&W 745 IPSC when they came on the market in 1986.

Same here. I actually found a 10th Anniversary model in a gunshop some years ago... but either it was poorly fitted, or had been shot a lot... the slide was loosey-goosey, and I had to pass on it.

My dream autos are pretty plain vanilla...

What I'm actually search for is a Belgian HiPower that isn't all buggered up. I found a few last year at the Dallas show, but, as usual, my cash flow at the time was not adequate for the opportunity found... story of my life.

The other 'dream' pistols would be a Bren Ten (pure fantasy, at this point...) an HK P7 (not so fantasy, and I almost bought one a few years ago when the police demils came over,) and one of those charcoal blued Colt 1911's that came out a few years ago (again, pure fantasy... not only cost, but lack of availability.)
