I would go right for a Smith model 10.Im in the market for a new pistol or revolver. Really hoping to get something that’s purely fun, cool, or pleasurable to shoot. I want something that’s just a little bit different than than what I already own: a G19, Shield 9, and G19 .22.
Thinking about a few different things:
- A WWII styled 1911 a1, the auto ordnance model
-Some sort of .22 DA or DA/SA revolver
- Some kind of classic .38 or .357
- an all metal DA/SA pistol with a rail, like a 226 or similar
- a full size Glock 21 style pistol
I’m open to all of the Highroad braintrusts suggestions, but it needs to be semi reasonably priced and be in a common caliber :9mm, .45, 357/.38, or .22 in that order. I’m almost completely against .40, but a pistol that offers the 40-9(-357) conversion easily could be in the running like a G22 may be a possibility.
A pistols ability to accept preban magazines is a major bonus since I’m behind enemy lines in Massachusetts. In fact, I’ll be trying to swap a preban magazine for most of the value of whatever pistol I decide on.
Thanks in advance!
In 1973, I saw the film "Where Eagles Dare" for the first time. The star of the show to me was not Richard Burton or Clint Eastwood, but the MP40 and ever since I wanted one. Wanted one badly. I can't afford the real thing so this knockoff will have to do. This pistol puts 9mm rounds downrange and is so effective I have not had to track one wounded soda can or water bottle. This is probably my one and only purely fun gun.

Would that be shooting magnums or specials? I like the drama but would hesitate to call it fun per se.My 629 6.5" classic DX (first revolver) I got 35+ years ago. Always hits what I aim at

Full size fun shooting cheap ammo- 10 shot .22 GP100
Everyone needs a 1911, a S&W and/or Ruger 357/38 and a Browning Hi Power.
Context is important. It all depends on what you think is "fun" about shooting - or about owning a gun. What kind of shooting - or collecting - do you like to do?

Good for you. I had only one instance where shooting 44 Special in magnum was justified...not a big deal really. Otherwise, I too shoot only with brass to match what is stamped on the barrel, but I reload to whatever level I want and enjoy experiencing and evaluating different loads. I tend not to shoot full power, because I want to use less costly lead bullets. The "fun", or at least satisfaction, comes from trying to shoot well when challenged with recoil and suboptimal grips. I get my fun with paper at 50 feet.Magnums, I don't tend to shoot specials in magnum revolvers. Just a personal quirk. This is a big, heavy gun that points naturally, it is fun to shoot!
