RC did a comment in this thread where he suggest staying below 40,000 PSI. His logic and comparison makes sense.

Ron
Thanks Ron, I think he is right. I didn't think to look to see if it was there at first but I have now, the 7.35 Carcano was necked up from the 6.5 case. It shows the pressures for it the manual and the highest pressure listed is 36766 and it was reduced loads from a different simular cartridge.

Pressure really isn't about the brass, it's about the gun. Even the relatively thin 45 colt brass can take 60,000 psi in the right gun. It won't last many firings though.

50 BMG may not be as easy to find as 5.56 But I think a 17/50 (#5) would be very interesting! LOL!

if you are looking for a multiple fomat/single cartridge combination, take a look at the 10mm Magnum. It will work in a rebarreled 6.8 SPC AR or bolt action rifle, fits a rechambered S&W M610 revolver, and IAI made semi-auto pistols for it. Ruger even made a few 10mm Blackhawks that can be rechambered for it. Personally, I'd leave my long gun or carbine chambered in 6.8 SPC and make my 10mm Magnum brass from used cases.

quote from BigG:
The 351 and 401 Winchesters were BIG failures used in blowback autoloaders with inordinately heavy bolt carriers. They make a 30 Carbine look like a good idea except for the anemic cartridge which seemed to be a specialty of Winchester.
Uh-huh, right. The M1907 Winchester with its .351 Self Loading round were very popular among law enforcement and prison facilities. Some still had them in their inventories well into the 70's. They also served in various military units in WW1. The depression era criminals preferred them over the Thompson (despite what Hollywood portrays) because of the power. The 180gr bullet launched in excess of 1800 fps which is .357 Maximum territory. They were hardly failures, but simply rendered obsolete by more modern designs.
