A Gun Could Have Helped Here...

Always love the comments from those who's only contact with a bear is the one in the bedroom that they hug at night. Bear spray works; I know from personal experience. But what most don't understand is a normal encounter with a bear is not favorable for someone to take out with a handgun, regardless of caliber. Your chances of hitting a charging bear and stopping it are very low with a handgun.

Not impossible but highly improbable. Bear spray does not need to be aimed, only directed. Big difference.

But a short barrel gun is good for the cases where the bear is on you and chewing on your torso; allows you to maneuver the gun into it's side and unload it. Under the from leg..like in a pit.

Since I don't plan on hiking in the local mall like most on this forum, and prefer the areas west and north of Cody WY, as well as west and north of Red Lodge MT; all full of grizzlies, I'll continue to carry a large can of bear spray, as well as a handgun just for that in case situation. And considering the many miles I have hiked in bear country, having just a few meetings with the furry creatures means I could hike another thousand miles and never even see any scat.

But I'll leave now and allow all you armchair bear hunters and killer experts to keep talking.....

It's always nice when someone swings by to be incredibly condescending.

Bear spray is great when it works which is around 50% of the time. It's great on curious bears, someone effective nuisance bear and almost useless on predatory bears.
