Brady campaign rates the states

Man, Florida beat out a whole bunch of states I didn't expect. You know your state has good gun laws when you beat out Texas. Now we need open carry and we are set.

Hmm. I thought Washington was pretty good on gun laws, but it looks like there are some much better states. We really need to get rid of our ban on machineguns and short barrelled rifles.

Damn! Alabama is ranked a 15??!!
I would have thought gun laws here were loose as a goose.
We got work to do boys.

I'm very disappointed by Alabama too. How is this possible? (Maybe because we are still technically a may-issue state?) This is an embarrassment.

no texas folk chiming in yet?

i'll take a 9...for now. bills are supposed to be introduced in the new session for concealed carry on campus, guns in car at work, and even open carry (according to my most recent TSRA email). hopefully we can get knocked down a few points in the 2009 rankings...

to clarify: TSRA isn't actively working on the open carry, but they linked an article in this week's email that said a state rep plans to introduce a bill for it. i don't think they'll actively lobby on that one, so it may be a long shot. the other two have a pretty decent chance, i think.

AND ... their scorecard is spinning the actual conditions!

They give CA 10 points for "one handgun a month, no exceptions". Not true - there are 2 exceptions, 1 for LEO and 1 for C&R licensees with Ca Cert. of Eligibility. -7

They give it 5 for "microstamping". That's in the law, but not yet in effect and probably won't go into effect. -5

They give 2 points for "external locks sold with all handguns". That's Federal, so either every state gets it, or no state gets it. Aside from Federal law (18 USC 922 (z)) CA allows a gun safe to be substituted. -2

They give 2 points for "local control of firearm regulations". That's false. -2
79 -16 = 63 -- That's still tied for "first" with New Jersey, dadgummit!

put those 2 points back on the board. Local Sheriffs control shall issue here. Rural counties are "shall issue", urban counties are "never, don't even think about it -issue"

Glad to see that all the states that I own property in, all scored less than 10 points.

The results are some what skewed. Alabama gets most of it's points from dealer regulation and as you pointed out we are technically a may issue state. I personally feel we still have some of the best gun laws in the country especially when it comes to places that are off limits.

Not that those 2 matter a whole lot - tied with NJ? Yuck! - but I'll keep them off.

Local control of CCW isn't what they mean (Brady would prefer no CCW at all, of course).

CA legislature tried to give local control of firearms, but failed to repeal or modify the government code that leaves licensing and registration at the state level. San Francisco tried to create more draconian requirements with it's court-voided Proposition H a couple of years ago; it failed to survive because Penal Code 12026 says
(b) No permit or license to purchase, own, possess, keep, or carry, either openly or concealed, shall be required of any citizen of the United States or legal resident over the age of 18 years who resides or is temporarily within this state, and who is not within the excepted classes prescribed by Section 12021 or 12021.1 of this code or Section 8100 or 8103 of the Welfare and Institutions Code, to purchase, own, possess, keep, or carry, either openly or concealed, a pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person within the citizen's or legal resident's place of residence, place of business, or on private property owned or lawfully possessed by the citizen or legal resident.
State pre-empts most of the things Brady wants given to local government.

Not everything, unfortunately. Some sales laws are more restrictive in, say, LA than in the rest of the state. There are still some 'Saturday Night Special' laws in effect, mostly because they haven't been challenged.

Just when I thought the Brady's couldn't be any more offensive, they rate the great state of NH at number 23?!?!?!? :cuss:

We should be number 48, only being beaten by Vermont and Alaska, who would tie at 49.

It's interesting to ponder how the Brady campaign's rankings, which I guess address how lax they think the gun laws are in a state, compare with the gun crime rate in a given state. Kentucky is tied for last with Louisiana and Oklahoma, yet my guess is KY and OK have far less gun crime than LA.

Is there are quick way to raise your state's score? I mean, I don't want to game the system, but WA came in middle of the pack. How many points for legalizing full auto?
