i work in downtown San francisco. i live in a town that has a decommisioned nuke plant and a national nuke lab where they make the bombs.

so i live here. family is here and i have a good job. moving away is not viable right now.

so if something happens (most likely earthquake) while at work the trains stop running and im stuck. my choices are stay in my work building if not destroyed, stay at a co-workers place if its not destroyed or hoof it home. i wear a suit every day. so i keep a backpack at my cubicle with some goodies in it. older pair of comfy boots, jeans, hoodie so i can change and blend in. a roll of quarters for making calls (assumes land lines work, but cells dont) a roll of nickels ( not for making calls :) ) and some cash $100 in small bills. a leatherman in a sheath and a a few bottles of water some cans of tuna and some halloween size candy bag. also some other shelter gear, heavie duty emerg blanket and a poncho in case its raining. i cant run the risk of having a gun at work so i dont. i spose i could start walking and be home in a day or 2. you'd be surprised how rural the bay area can get real quick just minutes from major hiways. i did some wilderness survival in boy scouts and have slept outside sans tent several times. not fun but could be done. doesnt get too cold here except for a few nites in the winter.

if something happens while im at home im bugging in. i have 2 kids under 2 and plenty of gas, water, food, diapers and formula to last a long while and of course my gun collection. also an urban garden and chickens. my house area is pretty far off the major thoroughfares through my town

IF there is a nuke accident, i am screwed. if it happens while wife is home and im at work, i hope she has the brains to pack the kids and bail. i insist she keep the SUV she drives with baby car seats in them at never less than 1/2 tank, i also have several 5 gallon gas jugs in the garage i rotate through and she can top off and throw the rest in the back and scoot. we can re connect later. she knows the combo to the safe and can get a revolver to have JIC

if we are both at home and something happens and we have to evac, well... its me and the rest of the east bay out on the road together. there are some alternative routes that i think a lot of people who live in my town dont even know about and can get out of the city and take backroads out to the valley or southbay. my parents are about 25 miles south and my cousin is about 60 miles south of me. if both their places are destroyed well, we all bunker up together, i provide the guns and ammo and we have a decent security force.
