Career as a BATFE agent?

il be honest, going into college i wanted to be a federal law enforcement agent, BATFE, DEA, ICE all the accronyms. but after 3 years of schooling, becoming a serious gun owner. i have swung wildly from conservative republican to libertarian ( still adapting)

i no longer believe i could work for big government, especialy not how it is now, nor the direction its heading.

i went from knowing exactly what i wanted to do with my life. to not having a clue in 3 years. great huh

Which part of ATF do you want to be a part of? The part that puts people in jail for freezing wine? The part that arrests people for selling tobacco leaves? The part that gets to prohibit barrel importation? The part that plants illegal guns to get convictions? The part that seizes property without filing charges, so that their victims can't fight back?

If you want to change that agency, then get appointed director of it. Then maybe you can do some good. Going in as a grunt work agent would just force you to choose between your ethics and your career.

How much good would it have done for a Jew - or even a handful or Jews - to enlist in the SS?

Well, there is moral rights and wrongs, which are always so very clear on the internet.

And then there is reality.

In reality, the ATF exists, and somebody is going to work for it. Those of us in the gun business who have to work with the ATF all of the time, are thankful for the agents who are professionals doing a job. I have no problems with my local compliance people and agents, because they're professionals.

I can get all indignant, but that doesn't change the fact that I still have to deal with them. So since the ATF exists, I hope that more good guys like Hank join up.

So you want to restrict and regulate my Scotch, Cigars and Bullets . . . may as well be my oxygen because without the first three, I don't care about the fourth and some of the third are going to come flying at you if you mess with the first two.

Why not get a job in LE and make some contacts within the agency and then start forming your own opinions. A job fair would also be a good place to make some contacts and start your research. An internet forum is not the place to start your search. I would bet that most of the people posting here have not once had any interaction with the BATFE other than reading the paper or the internet.

Might as well say you want to work for the IRS.

Or that you want to be a prison excecutioner.

A prison executioner provides a valuable service to society. Nothing wrong with that.

During the Clinton administration, I tried to get a job with the Bureau of Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll.

'Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms' aught to be a chain of convenience stores.

im not sure why people are saying we need good pro 2a people in jobs like this. The agencies stand for exactly the opposite. People should be arguing that we dont even need the BATFE not who should work for them. Its just one of a long list of agencies used to keep the govts thumb over people ready to squash them if need be.

If you are mission-focused as most gov't employees are, then why not join the bureau of alcohol, tobaccy, and fun? More pro-2A guys in this field cannot hurt.

Question is, when you're doing it: will it be as fulfilling as you once thought it would be?

Yeah... But you could get hired and then just do a really bad job at it.

In fact, I think this is a good plan. We should get everyone on THR hired to ATF, then just sandbag so much the whole thing falls apart. :)

"Oh, was there supposed to be a raid today? I forgot. And had my cell phone turned off. And I was in the shower. All day."

That's fun and all on the internet, but I can kick, and scream, and throw a fit, and wish really really hard that tomorrow morning the government will revert to something that Thomas Jefferson would recognize, but the fact of the matter is that the ATF is still going to be the ones approving my paperwork and inspecting my inventory. Whether I like it or not is irrelevant. If I want to sell guns for a living, I have to deal with the ATF.

So in the meantime, I would rather deal with an agency populated by people who don't despise the business they are supposed to regulating.

Two whole pages of this thread and not one solid piece of evidence as to WHY he shouldn't consider joining the BATF. Not very "educated" it appears. I value most opinions put forth on THR, but this has been a anti-BATF thread since the first reply.

Does the idea of murdering children in an inferno

And what is that in reference to?

You state you want to get into Law Enforcment. Then you state you want to Join the BATFE. Which do you want?

Law Enforcement...................or

Tax Collector.

You want to go into law enforcement? Look elsewhere. You have some fantasy that you'll spend your days doing battle with al-queda and blowing up their bombs in the desert. In reality you'll spend your days putting FFL's out of business for paperwork errors and regular folks in federal prison because some of the "red rod" is visible after you dropped it down a shotgun barrel. I'd rather stand by the side of the road with a cardboard "will work for food" sign. Joe

My Grandma ...

My grandma used to make Dandelion wine. I wonder how many BAFTE agents it would take to smash in her door at 5:00 AM and beat the $H|+ out of her before dragging her, naked, out to the armored car? I'm gonna guess about 20.

Back when I was younger and dreamed of being independent and doing things for myself, I thought it would really be cool to grow tobacco and make my own chew ... probably a good thing I never did ...

It's amazing what USED TO BE perfectly legal in this country, that now you can have your sorry b-hind beaten and thrown in jail for.

Well, it's not exactly a great wonderful organization. For all the good stuff they do, other LE can do it too if they were away.

If you do join, just selectively enforce stuff. You know, only go after real criminals that hurt people, not people with 15 inch rifle barrels and more than 10 imported parts and all.

It's not a very noble organization, but if you can be a good ATF Agent, then by all means, go for it.

I told a knob to think about the ATF as a career option this weekend.

He got a little overeager as the support element in a MOUT exercise, and the corporal running it racked him because "You couldn't have known if it was a terr with a weapon or a nursing mother" and "You might have just leveled a house full of civilians".

After we were out of earshot, I told him that if he really *liked* killing nursing mothers and burning houses full of civvies, there was always the ATF if the Marines didn't work out.:neener:
