Do any Police Departments still use 9mm ?

Beretta 8357 is the pistol you inquire about, SouthpawShootr, it was listed in the 03 or 04 catalog but seems to have vanished in the wake of the CX4 pistol. Could be like the "Pintail" ES100 shotgun that went absent from the catalog but was/is still available NIB. I wanted a 8357 when I got the catalog that year- but "settled" on a new Para. In 45

9mm still extremely popular.. remember it is a mature product and so would not get as much marketing exposure as a 'new' kid... this may give the impression that it is all about the 'new' kid...

Beretta 92s still also extremely popular...

I recently talked to two NC troopers at the range. They said the .357 Beretta Cougars were slated for replacement due to excessive barrel wear.

Barrel wear???? :what:

Man, they must do much more shooting than the average LE. Either that you something seriously wrong with the Beretta barrels (maybe there's a reason they're not in the catalog anymore). I wonder how VSP is making out with their P229 .357 Sigs.

Out here, the Sheriff's are allowed to carry pretty much anything they want. As far as I know, they all have .40's or .45's (mostly Sig's and Glocks). It is very rural here, so most likely they will be firing at deer or antelope that have been wounded by cars. I do know that neighboring Douglas County is only allowed .40 or .45.

Interestingly, it either Denver or Arapahoe county (can't remember) are not allowed to carry .40; 9mm or .45 only. The way I understand, it is a logistics thing and the department does not want to have numerous different caliber pistols to feed.

In my town, the cops here all carry a GLOCK 17/19 or 22/23 from what I've seen. The percentage between the 9mm and .40cal seem to be about even...

The 9x19 and .40 S&W are running neck-and-neck in terms of LE use being to close to call a "winner." The .45 ACP is third, and the 357 SIG is a very distant fourth (just slightly better than "also ran").

So, yes, a number of LEAs still use the 9x19.

Chicago PD standard is the 9mm. Allowing some others in 40-45 if you qualify at personal expense. Still some carrying the 38 +p revolver load(in revolvers).

When I went to re-apply for my CCW, I was surprised to learn that the Lehigh Vallley, PA Sheriff's Department still carries revolvers in .38/.357 ... or at least they did as of last year.

Robert...while 9mm cost may be a factor...I highly doubt that it is THE deciding factor.

Dallas PD in Texas uses 9mm and .357Sig but no .40S&W. Obviously the .357 Sig is more expensive than the 9mm and DPD is one of the most budget driven agencies I've seen.

At the bank this morning, noticed the Wells Fargo guards pistols. Outside, I asked: they were carrying Ruger 9mm autoloaders. I asked if they were issued, they said no; purchased them on their own. Didn't ask why...

Actually, the Dallas PD chose the 9x19 as the issue round in a shoot-off between it and the 357 SIG. The 357 SIG is an optional round.

The bottom line is the best current generation premium 9x19 ammunition is every bit as effective as the best current generation 357 SIG and .40 S&W ammunition. There is no performance drawbacks to the 9x19.

In terms of cost, there is no significant difference between the 9x19, 357 SIG and .40 S&W when it comes to carry ammo. The 9x19 might offer some cost advantage when it comes to practice ammo, but when buying in bulk for a good-sized LEA probably not as you imagine Robert. LEAs get good deals on ammo (and don't pay taxes on it).

Thanks for clearing that up J. I wonder why DPD doesn't allow Officers to carry .45 or .40?

I wanna say the NYPD is still using 9mm Glocks...can't remember if they're 19s or 17s.

Last time I was down in NYC, I was talking to an officer while I was handing out fliers at an event. I started the conversation off about his carry piece. He had a Glock 19. According to him, the officers have a choice right now between a 9mm S&W or Glock 19. I dont' remember the Smith designation though. Apparently some of the older officers are still using Model 10's in .38, but they are phasing those out.

Elsewhere, the New York State Police issues Glock 17's.

What 9mm ammo should us civilians be buying for this to CCW?

Thanks...

And they will continue to carry revolvers, until Sheriff Rossi is replaced by the voters.
