It is important to note that this question applies to variety of drugs. Consider these circumstances;

1. Your wife gets the flu, goes to the Doctor and gets a prescription. A couple of days later you come down with the same thing and since your wife is feeling much better you take her leftover meds instead of going to the Doctor yourself. Guess what? You are breaking the law which makes you a illegal user.

2. You have a script which calls for 1 pill every 8 hours. You feel really bad so you take 1 pill every 4 hours or 2 pills every 8 hours. Guess what? Ding, ding, ding. You just broke the law again.

It certainly does, and you are correct that taking prescription medication that was not prescribed to you is generally illegal.
