"Got .22 Long Rifle Ammo ?"

I still thin it's like this. Before the shortage, not all stores were ordering 22lr every day or week so the factories had no trouble keeping up. Now every retailer is ordering all the time because they are all sold out. So with the factories having to distribute it with more retailers constantly, retailers dont get as much as they used to. Just my guess.

I have that. Two problems. One - if you have a slow 3g connection like I do at work - by the time you hit checkout on cabelas site the stuff is out of stock. Happened to me yesterday. And then even though you didn't get any - it won't allow you to try and reorder if it pops up again due to the 1 box limit. And Two - I coulda had that one from Natchezz but the shipping was over half the price of the ammo. So 5.5 cents /round turns into almost .10...
I have the same issue at work sometimes ,as far as the shipping I added 4 1/2lb rimfire exploding targets without increasing the charges. I have a list of stuff I want and or need and bundle it with the ammo in fact the next time cabelas pops up for ammo I'll add a nice cleaning kit in a wood box on sale from 39.99 down to 19.99

How... do... those... same... folks... always... know... when... it's... there???
Well I'm one of those folks I guess (you can check a locked thread or two I started on the subject).

I only got into 22 around 8 months ago:
1. It got so expensive to shoot everything else.
2. The 22AR shortage was finally over (and they've had time to debug).
3. After my first AR22, the 22 firearm collection has grown, because
4. They're as much fun (if not more) to shoot than the big boyz!

As a long-time shooter, I've always collected enough ammo over the years to avoid panics, price spikes, etc. Since I was new to 22, I was blindsided by the 22LR shortage.

I was amazed at how little was at Walmart - they told me it was put out @ 7am every morning, so I said "no problem - I'll be here @ 6:50 every morning".
And I was - every day for 2 months, and I only got 22 ammo twice in that time!

I knew something was "wrong" at this point - I figured Walmart had to be getting much more 22 in than this, so I went to work figuring out (and monitoring) the system.

In short order, I had enough 22 (all from Walmart) to satisfy myself, 2 friends, and a few others that were desperate for 22.

Anywho - I've been at this for over 8 months, and here are a few things I've seen / found:
1. When I first started my research, it appeared there were insiders at about 20% of the Walmarts I visited.
2. I'd say that percentage is now up to around 40% of stores I visit with insiders now at work (hiding ammo for friends, flippers, etc).
3. There does now appear to be a dip in supply, so there appears to be something going on in the supply chain.

Here's a few more:
1. I've been sold 22 ammo from under the counter 3 times (against Walmart policy).
2. The insiders have ramped up their game with the 1,000 rd. boxes of Winchester M*22.
3. I've been to a number of Walmarts when inventory trips - I'm either blown off, or offered up 100-rd. boxes of CCI to hopefully pacify me, and the 1,000 rd. boxes of M*22 are held for friends, etc.
4. After swearing I'm wrong, we don't have any M*22, etc, I monitor inventory and see within a short while, it "disappears" from inventory. The last guy that pulled this swore there was no M*22 - I reluctantly took the sacrificial 100-rd CCI (from under the counter) and told him I was going to monitor the M*22 inventory, and would be back if it disappeared. I bought my ammo @ 7:15pm (this particular store puts it out as it arrives) - the M*22 was sold @ 9:50pm (the sporting goods department closes @ 10pm).
5. After a talk with the manager (to verify Walmart policy is still "first come, first serve", no stashing/hiding ammo, and no storing under the counter), I visited the store the next day - the manager is on vacation for 2 weeks! :scrutiny:

I told you all that to tell you this...
There is much more ammo coming into Walmart than you think, and the insiders are harder at work and increasing in number!

A TALE OF TWO WALMARTS
There are 2 of 'em out of town I've visited - they're only 6 miles apart.
I've been in one 10 times @ 7am - if the ammo is not out, I show them the printout and tell 'em their inventory tripped yesterday, and they go in back and bring it out from the locked cage in back.
Been in 10 times, walked out with 22 ammo 10 times.

Meanwhile, 6 miles down the road, when inventory trips, I visit and am not only blown off (a warning sign of insiders at work), but beat up (figuratively) by the same old guy working the counter - then I go home and watch the inventory go down, down, down, gone!
I've been in this Walmart 10 times, got ammo ONCE. It was the middle of the day, and I figured it would be useless, but I was in the neighborhood, and darn if there wasn't some Federal 550 boxes of 22 (@ 2pm)! I also noted that a clueless young gal was working that day - no sign of the grumpy old guy that loves to beat up on customers looking for 22 ammo!

Hmmmm...
1. 2 Walmarts 6 miles apart, and inventory trips on both the same day.
2. Visit one 10 times, get ammo 10 times.
3. Visit the other 10 times, get ammo only once, when the clueless (out of the loop) gal is working!
You figure it out...

BTW - I've seen pictures of pallets of 22 ammo from another big box store - a person with access to the warehouse snapped them - this particular chain puts out only X number of boxes all during the day to keep folks trickling in.

FWIW...

I have that. And unless there is a way to update it that I don't know about - it is not very accurate. Got on it a bit ago and shows nothing since yesterday? Am I missing something on how to work that site?

How are you able to monitor their inventory?
I can't tell all my tricks! :D (sorry)

Actually, it's not that hard to find out how, and no, I don't use ammo-can.net (was not impressed with 'em).
I actually built a spreadsheet and monitored around 20 to 25 Walmarts - I could use the sheet to loosely predict ammo deliveries of the particular flavors of 22 I was after - it was pretty darn accurate, but at one time 22 ammo deliveries were coming so hot and heavy that there was no use maintaining the spreadsheet. It now appears, for whatever reason, that "spike" in 22 ammo is over, and for some reason 22 deliveries are down.

My (and Walmart's) system ain't foolproof, and there is a flaw in Walmart's inventory system.
Hard to believe, but if the truck at the warehouse is overloaded by either weight or volume, inventory is set aside to be loaded on the next truck.
When the truck that was supposed to have inventory arrives, it shows as delivered (in store), but is still in the warehouse.
I've only had this happen once locally - darn if the ammo wasn't there the next day - most of the time it disappears later in the day (as I monitor inventory).

I went from no 22 ammo to having a stash that would embarrass me to post (I laugh at your pathetic pictures of inventory!) :D

I also provided enough 22 for two friends that also got into 22ARs.

I'm done with 22 - got all I need, so I just go for easy pickings locally these days. I got so much 22 that I actually started turning a bit of it down (especially Remington) - these days I don't - I ain't walking out empty handed, as there are always friends that will take it.

BUT
As I have explained to a number of Walmart managers, it ceased being about the ammo a long time ago .
I just don't like getting jerked around. :cuss:

@Racinfan.....If you can, save the ammunition page from Cabela's on your phone and check it periodically. Sometimes that's better than waiting for the alerts. I'm close enough to Cabela's that driving there for 100 rounds is worth it. YMMV

pointless hoarders make me sick. I get up early to be at work before 8am. With traffic I leave around 7:30am. When I get a chance to swing by Walmart after work they tell me that when they put the ammo on the shelve around 7:30am ... it's gone within a few minutes. every day.

same ammo shows up on gunbroker a few minutes later at grossly inflated prices...

You said "pointless hoarders" up front, but then you described "flippers". Which one is it that makes you sick?

The people who purchase goods on the open market and then keep them for future use, or the capitalists who practice arbitrage?

I'm sure nearly everyone on here has smart phones, so quit complaining and set yourself up for email alerts from gunbot and wikiarms. Just this week I got 2 500rd bricks from cabelas for 21.99 each and a 525rd box from Natchez for 28.99. The 2 bricks are going to people I work with and I'll keep the 525 pack. A month or so ago the alerts were spotty at best but in the last week the deals have been popping up daily and sometimes multiple times a day. So you can waste 100's of dollars in gas driving around looking or sit back and complain about someone who has too much ammo in your opinion or you can use the tools that are right under your nose, set up email alerts and wait for your phone to beep. rant off
Along with the prices per brick, please tell us the shipping costs as well because I would like to get a better idea of your actual costs

2009 was not as bad for rimfire and enough time didn't pass.

2009 was still terrible for ammo, and there weren't "yard sale prices" or people "dumping their ammo at bargain basement prices" or any of that.

I would be thrilled if that happened, I'd love to see the bottom fall out and prices plummet so I could start buying cases of ammo, but I really really don't think it will happen. Just like I really didn't think it would happen after 2009.

The Cabelas bricks were 27.94 delivered and the Natchez order was 12 or 13 dollars shipping but I added some other stuff I needed and the shipping stayed the same. Another thing you need to remember when factoring in shipping costs is the gas you'd burn bouncing from store to store looking for ammo so it's really a wash except I do it from the comfort of my home versus driving all over gods creation for a brick of 22

I don't recall any issue with 22 in 2009 but then I didn't have so many ammo guzzling guns back then nor did I spend time on gun related forums. I recall 380 being hard to find because I did shoot it some at the range but I didn't have any of the pocket guns so didn't ccw that caliber. around here the 9mm was available and that's what I carried.

I predict a few years from now we are gonna see yard sale prices on pre-owned ammo.
Nope they'll only have to drop it a dollar lower than walmart prices for people to buy it.
and by that time they won't have any money invested in inventory as it was paid for when the sold the other half for 300% profit

On Sunday the guys(4) in front of me bought all of the 22lr. Do I blame them. No. I blame myself for not getting there earlier.
Yesterday morning my wife happened to be at a local WM so she went by the gun counter and they had 22 ammo.
While she was getting her 3 boxes a guy came up behind her and the counter guy pulled three boxes up and said "The usual..?" to that guy .:scrutiny:
Yeah, there are folks hitting it at a regular basis but that's the hazard of a free market.

And I don't mind that. Its my fault if I'm not there when the ammo is put out. Mine alone. There is nothing to gain by complaining about it. I just scored 1,000 rounds of 22lr from Midsouth. Yea I've got a smartphone and I check web sites on a regular basis. Sometimes I'm lucky like today and sometimes I'm not. All it takes is some perseverance. I've been working a plan since this time last year and I can say it has been working.

It's funny and sad at the same time to see people getting all excited about spending lots of time and energy hoping to score some plinking ammo every now and then at $30-60 a brick after shipping or gasoline costs. That's the new norm, though. It's pretty tough to swallow if you were one of the guys paying $180 shipped for 5k round cases less than 18 months ago.

I have about 14K rounds to sell and was going to list it on GB but I called the one gun shop we have here and he suggested I put an ad on his bulletin board. He said people check it every day and I'll probably have it all sold within a month even at GB prices. I'm giving it a shot. He wants nothing for use of his board.

It might be worth your time to check your local pawn shop and gun dealer bulletin boards?
