The only rifle that I owned from 1977-94 was a Ruger 77 in 270. Shot 130gr Speer HotCors mostly. That old rifle took 22 whitetails, 2 mulies, 2 pronghorns, a bobcat and a turkey. Took 3 deer pushing 400 yards, but you know something? I could have done it with a 30-06 too.

Speaking of which, does anyone have any further news on the .277 Fury? 270 Win + performance from a 16" barrel seems quite interesting. AFAIK, only chambered in the Sig Cross rifle so far? And has there been any further news about reloadability?

They've only produced Cross rifles in .308 and 6.5 CM thus far. I've got one of the .308s and will be tempted to pick up a .277 Fury barrel when they finally come out (assuming reloading tools and info are available), but at this point they are theoretical.

2,000,000 satisfied hunters with 3 .270s that they get from their displeased friends/relatives after the said party figures out the snake oil they've fallen for.
:neener:
Pointed my .30-40 at a deer and it started begging and pleading for its life, it was only 150 yds away, grabbed the .270 and pointed at the deer and he smiled in relief, picked the .30-40 up and he began pleading to be shot with the .270 instead.........
Couple years later, chasing some pronghorn, had .243s, they wouldn't let us get under 300-500 yds all week, one friend finally just dropped his doe at 500 with a 95 gr btip. The next week I had my .270 buddy out for his doe tag, and that doe practically danced in front of us at 30 yds. After the rest of the herd chuckled off laughing at us, he accepted that he'd have to simply deal with bagging the stupid easy doe. Last I heard he's eyeballing a 6.5 prc.........

My wife's sibs all shoot .270s, as do a fair number folks I know. I've tried them a time or two myself, and can agree that there isn't much you can't do with a 150gr .277 partition at 2800.
That said, is there any real difference between a 150gr .277 partition at 2800, a 140gr partition launched from a 6.5mm at 2800, a 160 .284 partition at 2800, or a 180gr partition launched at 2800 from a .30-06?

Pretty much all middle of the road critter gitters, none of which are poor choices.
Maybe I'd prefer a 156 6.5 pushed to 2800-3000???
If only they had a 7 mm that could compete with that kind of performance........

Golly my 15 year old daughter is already shooting 50cal muzzleloader with a 250gr bullet over 150gr of Pyrodex. If 30-06 or 7mm mag is too much recoil, then modify the rifle, don’t chose a poor chambering. Next outing she’ll be firing the 300win mag and smiling about it.

Ive always found the magic bullet to be the one that fits in the rifle appropriately chambered for the size critter I’m hunting.

I shoot a 250 or 300 over 120gr of loose 777, and find that load mildly offensive in my traditions UL. Gave up on the 150gr (or equivalent) charges lol.

You mean "soccer moms"
Friends don't let friends drive minivans or shoot 270s - they go for SUVs and 7mms...............................:p:D:rofl::thumbup:

Aha you fell for my trap! You assumed Berger! I want my bullets Uber destructo, 156 oryx!!! Bonded for extra tuff!!! (Kidding aside I truly enjoy the bullet tech that we've got available compared to when I was a kid lol)
Ya know, I completely forget about Norma's bullets sometimes. I don't think I've ever actually used any. There are a ton of available options, and I used to really get into trying to fit the best one for each application. I don't kill enough stuff anymore to really do that, so haven't deviated too much from what I know works.....I really need to try some new ones tho, I'm kinda getting bored always shooting the same basic bullets.
Hell, maybe I need to try the .270 again. It's not like I don't already have everything to load for it.

Nononono, that's a crossover SUV lol!!!!!!!
Thought it was a Dodge Magnum.......

You had me at I already have the stuff to load for it or we would derail into that .270 wsm Benelli.......
Make sure you get that barrel twisted right!

I can always get new dies, and my brass is like 4 guns old, so might be time for a re-up .......yes I can convince myself of anything.

I do have that 23" .270win barrel, but it's a 1-10......
Hrrmmmm .270 Gibbs launching 110 accubonds to plaid might be fun.

Meh project for another time......

A 270 Gibbs sounds interesting....

Well if you got the wrong twist, how bout a close to mid-range death laser with 110 accubonds? Oughta be good for hogs and goats and axis....... Probably still not big enough for them chickens though....
Eta quick guess work says imr4451 should get you just shy of 3400 and anything under 500 yds would be a goner, recoil shouldn't be awful, could always slow it down for a kid gun since that's coming up soon enough...... Oughta flatten anything under 300 yards ridiculously easy, and then crank up the 160 partition when things get serious I suppose.....

If you’d take the undersized .277, add .007 (thickness of two sheets of paper) and round it up to .284 to take advantage of the vast selection of better B.C. bullets, add another 12-15 grains of powder to get decent velocity, and add a belt you’d have the optimum game getter.

We seem to have the O.P. post this identical thread a couple times a year. Isn’t any more true now than it was the last few times it was posted.

I’m surprised some jack wagon hasn’t crowed about O’Connor like he was the second coming. I read his stuff when it was original back in the 60’s and didn’t think any more if it then than I do now. Seemed like EVERY friggin’ story was about sheep hunting in the Sonora desert and the magical, mystical .270 was equivalent to a Martian death ray. Just the thought of the all powerful .270 would make the sheep die of fright

Remember, a lot of hunters aint really rifle loonies.
They just repeat what the saleman told em (and usually not 100% accurately LOL).
How many can actually shoot well enough to take advantage of differences?
How many need to work on their hunting ability?

IMHO.......the long action mediums all work.

They're critter killers.

Pick a cool rifle in one of em. ;)
