If You Could Have Only One Carry Piece For SD What Would It Be?

If I could have only one my first choice would be a 3"-4" medium frame .357.
My reasoning is that that is what I am the most comfortable with, the most competent with, and have the most faith in.
YMMV

My second choice (a very close second) would be my CZ P-01.

Third would be a toss-up between my S&W M&P9 Shield and one of my J Frame revolvers.

Also, I’m a firm believer that the right holster makes most of the difference.
^^^^THIS.

I didn't carry the gun I wanted to carry because I tried a few holsters and it was just painful so I carried a lesser gun. Then I found a holster a friend had given to me that I didn't think I'd like because of wide footprint (supertuck iwb) but I tries it and it was actually very comfortable and held the gun in exactly the right position. It's hard to find the best holster because it's not like you can go try on a bunch in any practical way.

I also shoot a .500 S&W carbine and spicy too.
Yes, the .500 and .450 give credence and extra consideration to the term hand cannon. I imagine a carbine in either of those would be a nice versatile BB carbine.

Launching a 400-500gr projectile out of a revolver going 1500fps plus is a potential sob

I also have a .500 S&W carbine along with a .500 revolver let the hammer down. 350 grain at 1910 FPS from the carbine and 1650 FPS from the revolver

Limited to what I already own, my S&W M639, my Satin Finish Colt Combat Commander and my Colt DS 72 for a New York reload.

When I first answered this in early summer, it was my SIG P365. I do love that gun, and the 12+1 in a very concealable package, and being nearly a pocket gun with a 10 round mag, is attractive. However, since I bought it, my 3" Taurus 856 Defender gets most of my carry time. It is only 6 rounds, but a revolver has advantages. The rounded shapes are much more comfortable (for me) and IMO conceal better (even if it prints, the several round lumps don't scream out "GUN" to people the way the sharp corners and edges of an auto do). With a Zeta 6 speed strip (a faster design than regular speed strips, but still flatter than a speed loader), I can do fairly quick reloads and have 12 rounds available if needed.

I love my 642 and it is the one I often grab when leaving the house. But the low capacity concerns me more and more as time goes on and I read about assaults by more than one thug. My Glock 26 is probably the one I should choose with its 10+1 capacity, total reliability (especially here in Illinois with the newest law limiting magazines to 10 rounds) but the thickness means I only carry in OWB. If I want to pocket carry, which I prefer, the gun most likely to meet all my needs is my Ruger LC9s which has been as reliable as the Glock, thinner as a single stack and easy to pocket carry in a Desantis pocket holster, and with 7+1 capacity a good compromise between the Glock 26 and the S&W 642.
