Loudest gun you've been around or fired?

when it comes to recreational shooting and such...

I've shot the .500 and many of the other big bores, but honestly, when I think of the LOUDEST I've ever fired or been around, a particular 30-06 that my friend's dad owns comes to mind, and also, I'd much rather be around or shoot a .500 than a .357! I LOVE shooting .357s, don't get me wrong, but when it comes to NOISE I think they are THE most unpleasant handgun in that department! Sure a .500 is LOUD but a .357 can give me a headache pretty quickly, something about the sharpness of that -CRACK-. I can shoot a .44 mag all day compared to a .357

Also, while we're on the topic, I never shoot without hearing protection, even .22lr. I happen to love music, and tinnitus SUCKS

Loudest I ever heard was a 105 howizter. But to a smaller degree let me share a funny story with all of you. I used to carry a 3" 629 (44 magnum). When you shot this thing it produced in daylight a fireball about the size of a basketball. The muzzle blast was pretty substantial. The only reason I finally stopped carrying it was that it was so darn expensive to practice with and if you're going to carry this you'd better practice pretty often. Anyway to my story. I came up to the range one day and the guy nect to me was just setting up. Friendly guy, he asked me what I was going to shoot and I told him my carry gun, a S&W snubbie. He just shook his head and told me to get rid of that belly gun and get a real gun, a 45 government model like he had. We set up our targets at about 7 yards. When I practiced my first string was always my carry ammo in the gun. I drew and fired and I think the noise and concussion almost knocked him over. He came running over yelling, asking if my gun blew up. I told him no it was just the blast from my S&W snubbie. He moved down about 30 yards and I didn't hear any more about getting a "real" gun.

Loss of balance from hearing loss (loud gun) a young hearing specialist told me to sit on the side of the bed, close my eyes with hands on knees, and flop on my side and count to 30. Set up straight and count to 30, then flop to the other side and count to 30. Repeat this everyday until the disyness stopped. I thought he was crazy, but it worked for me. You might give it a try, hope it works for you. Al

.454 Casull.....a friend touched off a round from inside the cab of a truck to put down a wild dog.....even with throwing muffs on our ears were ringing for several hours....

Hard to say off-hand, but I think I'm going to have to say the .50 BMG. I just had just entered the gun club, so didn't have hearing protection on. Ouch.

M110, eight-inch howitzer. Please don't ask what a ChAir Force guy was doing anywhere CLOSE to one of those!

Agreed! My .357 686 is the loudest gun I own....and I don't think it's even close.

M777A2 God's Gun. I don't know if that counts though. Haha. Besides that, probably an Armalite AR-30 in .338 Lapua.

A 460 sw and 500 are probably the loudest gun's i have fired. Something about that 460 firing those Hornady 200gr. with the little red tip's, awesome.

These two were LOUD, in the days before ear defenders:

- Firing a .303 Lee-Enfield in 25 yard brick walled range

- Acting as loader for a Bren .303 magazine fed MG ... which has some sort of vile exhaust gas port which blasts into the loader's ears.

Also: Not a gun - but LOUD - Honest John tactical missile launch

In the Army,I worked on and fired big guns. The first was the worst. The old M-48 tank had a 90mm main gun. This gun had a bore evacuator and blast defelecter. It deflected the blast to the sides. The first shot is always fired remotely, from outside of the tank. The first time I was close when it was fired,I thought it blew up! The noise and concusion is unbeliviable.

If you think a 90mm is loud, wait 'til you've heard a 16" naval rifle (battleship's main guns) while anywhere aboard.

I don't have much experience but I was at an informal match and one shooter had a compensated 1911 in .45 i assume. Everyone around me clamped down on their earmuffs and I swear the concussion blew my hair back with each shot.
