The only one not really respecting the official line about keeping distance is the dog

His absolute favorite thing in the world is laying down on somebody's face and lick them in the ear.

Especially when that somebody is trying to post some clever remark on the internet

The only one not really respecting the official line about keeping distance is the dog

Our collection of neighborhood feral cats have been generally ignoring the social distancing guidelines, except with regard to one gray bruiser we call Bill (after the cat in the Bloom County comic strip); Bill has a respiratory problem that includes sneezing bloody snot over everything, to the point where even the other cats keep their distance. The wall around his bed looks like Sweeney Todd's basement. However, he's a very sweet-tempered, affectionate cat -- you just need to put on a HazMat suit before inviting him into your lap.

Poor cat, we some how ended up with 5 at the moment. My sister would not being hers to get fixed, hard to give away cats anymore. I think I saw that dogs can get the corona virus and transfer it.

I've spent some time on Chairgun and it turns out that I have to readjust every rule of thumb I've used for sighting in this rifle.

All my other rifles I've set 2" high at 100 meters and that would let me shoot out to 200 without adjusting my aim, we're taking hunting precision here.

We have new targets for the running moose made by a veterinarian from the Swedish Agricultural University that more exactly coincides with the killing zone. 22-5180_alg_h_skjutbana-1024x707.jpg

The central portion is now 40 cm in diameter, 15 3/4", if I give myself some marginal and set my KZ to 30 cm or 1' that gives me a point blank range of 257 meters and an apogee of just under 6" at 110.

This means that it's sighted and ready for hunting without me adjusting anything, and the rear sight has been removed and put back in place.
I should move the impact a tad too the right but it's good enough out to 100 m as is.

Suddenly the moniker the Spud Gun seems very appropriate.

And the guy who put the witness mark on it really knew his stuff

I've always set my guns around 2" night never had any trouble . If the gun has flip up sights I'll set main sight dead on.

That's a still a big kill zone on that moose, even standing most should be able to hit that at 300 yards standing. Surprised it does not extend up the right side where the scapula is, that's normally a good shot to take.

The old kill zone extended up where you suggest, only there's nothing vital there. But there's spineous process (I had to Google that so I'm not sure that's the right word)
If you hit one of those the moose will drop like a stone only to recover some minutes later and run off.

And then you have a long tedious search ahead of you to find it and kill it.

This is the old target area superimposed on the vital area

He has made a lot of research on the vital area of game and made these images of most of the big game animals shoving the KZ from different angles.

This is the Moose Clock as it's called

If I set kill zone to 10 cm (4") then calculated far zero would lie at 135 m and point blank range at 160 m.
Apogee at 73 m and it would be 4cm high at 100.

I think this would be optimal.

These apps are fun, we used to do it by shooting at a bunch of distances and looking up coefficients in tables and hammering on the calculator in frustration and end up wrong anyway.

So now I need to find a higher front sight.

As for the competitive aspect most misses tend to be behind and low anyway so the only difference is that the X ring has dropped an inch

Edit:

This is a scope for running moose, the dots are calibrated for the new target and the high center dot is placed on the ear

I just do it once a year to qualify for the hunting teams requirements but it's a big shooting sport.

I bought a used gun safe at an auction house and I went there to see if it could be disassembled for transport and pay for it.

Thank God the door can be removed and the interior shelves and fire box can be removed because it weighs 220 kg

Anyway, I found this ML rifle and sort of fell in love with it. Look at that little hunting dog/shark thingy.
That grin is just evil!

But the "restoration"!
It looks like someone sand blasted the metal parts :what: :(:cuss:

Should be 1830's or 40's and made in Linköping about 300 km north east from here.
The current bid is $65 and ten days to go.
I know I shouldn't even consider it but I want to take it home.

Looks like it would be a fun restoration project, wish I could find something like that.

I think it might be beyond restoration, but it'd be a nice wall hanger.

Pity the other R. Southgate (Royland) has passed from this mortal coil -- he could have made a brand new copy for you that would have been finer and stronger than the original.

I think it might have been a push safety, I've seen German locks with that feature.

It's obviously a converted flintlock and the more I look at those photos, the more it looks like a late 18th century gun , the very thick buttstock and the sloping cheek for instance. My head was perfectly vertical with the sights lined up

Royland Southgate would have made a much better job of it, the motto in my sig is from his powder horn and I really like it.

I've got an internet acquaintance who work as a museum curate in the vicinity of Linköping, I hope he can tell me about the gunsmith

I put in a bid for just a bit more than it really was worth and I got outbid :(
But I actually feel good about keeping to the budget for once and not going crazy and spending far more than reasonable.

I heard Trump trying to shift focus from his own shortcomings to Sweden's incredible irresponsibility, pure misdirection.

We're not "suffering very greatly"

Most business is open as usual with restrictions, people are being put on notice but the UBS requirements for membership time before benefits are reduced from 12 to 3 months.
Since three months is the most common term when being laid off you can get full benefits if you join when you get your notice.

There are a host of other support packages being launched to take care of businesses.

Our hospitals are not full, the Army has erected field hospitals in the major cities and some patients are treated there as a trial but the ordinary ICU wards still have beds.
The curve in Stockholm have flattened out noticeably and is expected to hold, the rest of the country is still climbing slowly.

Like the rest of the world we've not managed to keep the virus out of the care homes and we're working hard to focus on that part.
Since 88% of all deaths in Sweden are people over 70 and 63% over 80 this is a failure.

In my opinion this is the single most effective thing that can be done, but it's very hard.
The staff is usually not trained for this level of care and protective clothing is non existing
I'm biased though, my dad is in a home and was taken to the hospital yesterday for a small brain hemorrhage, he's rapidly succumbing to Alzheimer's and his body is giving up.

These are yesterdays numbers as far as i been able to verify them; Sweden have usually had roughly the same population as New York City, we've grown a bit lately so we're now 2'' up.
Comparing a country to a metropolis is comparing apples and oranges though, so a comparison to Stockholm would be a bit more accurate

The numbers for confirmed Covid19 should be considered highly approximate to the actual level of contagion, we are no longer testing suspected cases so basically only ICU cases are confirmed.

Code:
1'st death Population Confirmed Dead % Conf. % Dead
Sweden 2020-03-11 10,202,491 11,445 1,033 0,11% 0,01%
Stockholm 2020-03-11 1,515,017 4,806 616 0,32% 0,04%
NYC 2020-03-14 8,398,748 110,465 11,127 1,32% 0,13%

Stay safe and wash your hands!

That's my online auction strategy: set the bid ceiling before the auction ends and never go a cent higher.

Good to learn that you aren't in bad shape up north. The numbers game can be a bit misleading in a current public health situation -- sometimes the stats are deliberately loaded for various motives, political, altruistic and otherwise. Personally I feel I could handle the unvarnished, uncertain truth, if actually known.

Now that high politics has been alluded to once, I think we'd best steer carefully around it on this part of THR.

I don't want to make this into politics, but fake news is just that so I had to present some real facts.

And I'm aware that you can't really compare Stockholm with NYC.
New York have about 30% bigger area and 6 times the population.

The numbers are genuine as far as I can tell, the medical community is too small for faked statistics to go unnoticed.
We had a big jump in deceased today but that's due to lack of reports over the Easter holidays. It takes a couple of days for the reports to be assembled.

On a gun related note I've bought two bottles of Norma 201 for some more FMJ and have started research for a good hunting load with 232gr Norma Vulkan bullets.
They have an excellent reputation in this caliber.

It's raining today so a good time for some brass works. When I had everything I needed l set up it was pouring down so I just left the rest of the stuff on the table instead of carrying it back to the garage.

It's been a while since last time and a new caliber to boot so it took a while to get everything sorted. I even made a wildcat.

It may look like a 9.3x62 but in fact it's a 9.3x63!
Less known as the mighty 36-06

20200501_170251.jpg 20200501_170347.jpg

Unfortunately that 30-06 wasn't the only cat in the bag.
I bought a case of 370-ish once fired Norma brass and every case I've seen had been just that. The 06 was my bad as I picked a case from the last shooting session to set the resizer for my rifle and got the wrong one.

I've set it for neck resizing only, but is infinitely close to full resize, there's no light showing between the brass holder and the die.

At the beginning I had some minor trouble.
The press needed a bit of lube, spent primers going everywhere, I really dislike that part about the rock chucker, there should have been a hole straight down through the piston for easy collection, could only find the old petroleum base case lube from the 80's so I used Decubal instead. Works great!
"For dry and sensitive skin. Oh, and brass"

After 133 cases I got a case that was a bit harder then the rest, so what do you do?
Lean a bit harder on the lever of course...
<Krunch>

Turns out I'd found a Berdan primered case.
I've never found one outside of military brass and it never occurred to me that there might be one here. I went through the rest of the bag and found a second case.
:fire::(:cuss:

I tried to straighten the tip of the rod, very carefu
<SNAP>

CK!

I was hoping to get all 370 done today but that plan failed. I might prime and load a ladder for 232gr FMJ with 44 to 46gr Norma 201, should work well. Since I have a 98 action rather than a 96 I can possibly go a few grains higher.
I've gotten a good recipe for 232gr Vulcan with 49gr of 202. Those should never be fired in a 96 action!

I just ordered up a bunch of extra recapping and sizing rods for my most used dies just to keep from stopping due to breakage. I had a few berdan primed cases get me recently. Nothin worse than being in the middle of a project and break a necessary tool with no backup...
