I have been shopping at Wal-Mart stores in and around Tucson for the three years since I returned from overseas.

I have always carried openly with no problems from anyone including the customers. The real shock came about three weeks ago when one of the greeters stopped me and said that 'a member of management had asked him to ask me to leave the pistol in my car'. I called to my wife who was just ahead of me and we turned around and left.

I then wrote a letter to the President of Wal-Mart about the situation and stated: If this is a Wal-Mart policy, I don't need to shop at Wal-Mart anymore. If it is this store managers policy, I don't need to shop at THAT Wal-Mart anymore. If this is that greeters policy, I think you can handle that. After two weeks went by, I did not expect to hear from them.

Anyway, to make a short story long, I just received a very nice phone call from a member of Wal-Mart management explaining that the greeter got it all wrong and that I was quite welcome to come into the store armed. She went on to say that she was completely surprised by the letter since this had never been their policy

This is the way it should be everywhere. It was a very pleasant phone call.

  ;)

Nice to hear, too bad it is not like that here in NY. If people could carry at all in NYS, especially in NYC, crime rates would plummet.

No offense to anyone, but when you live in anti-2nd Amendment states, why are you surprised when most everyone acts that way? Some of us, and the states we live in, don't put up with that crap. Thus, it's in their business interests to not mess with us.

Who was surprised by anything in this thread? I think the only person who was surprised by anything was the lady who worked at Walmart in AZ, surprised to hear about the complaint.

I think we from "ANTI" states are not surprised but rather happy for the people in other states where gunlaws are more lenient. If anything was offensive, I think it would possibly be offensive for you to seemingly group everyone in a state as to being anti 2nd amendment. There are plenty of New Yorkers who are pro-gun, probably more New Yorkers by sheer numbers than let's say people in Arizona or people from Wyoming or Montana. That is just because there are so many of us. Sure we are outnumbered by antis and just don't care types here in NYS but, we do all we can to keep our rights alive.

all the best,
GB

I about lost my mind at WalMart today waiting on ammo but thats a whole nother story.

Glad to hear your response.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if the pro 2A type in anti states worked harder that the shooters in the other states to protect 2A. Us'ns from "good" states take carry rights for granted, by and large. Of course, we all know that generalizations are dangerous!!

(Did anybody understand that? It's been a long day in ER!)

Wal-mart here used to post "No weapons except those with CCW" Now they don't even bother with that. Maybe some antis objected to the 'legal guns welcome'.

Stay safe.
Bob

Your lucky. No Walmarts in NJ can even sell ammo let alone walk in a store "packed".

Sounds like a good experience.

Had a similar one with Safeway (grocery store) up here. They had a sign stating no firearms posted at the entrance. Called up corporate, asked what their policy was. Told me CCW was fine with them, and stores can't make their own rules.

Not too long after the sign was taken down.

Turns out it was a sign to remind people of the old west for their line of steaks....it was a stupid advertisement. :scrutiny:

Bet they never expected someone to question them on that one. Must have been a suprise to the sheeple at the store to be told to take that sign down. :neener:

NJ Is Bad

EVIL5LITTER Said:
"WHAT? They can't sell ammo in NJ? ***?"

Heres News hollow points are against the law, there aint gona be no drive by Bayonetings either, because bayonet lugs are illegal, and Normal capaciry mags are out too, and the only way to get a permit is to service the chief i suspect.

Guy

I work in NJ every day M through F

Good for WalMart! Are you going to get your permit? They just went from 4 years to 5, and the class from 16 hours to 8.
BTW, stay out of Bashas - anti, signs vary from NO GUNS!, in the poor neighborhoods, ie Prince and Roger, to CCW ONLY in the high end, like the Kolb and Sunrise store...

Glad to hear your experience turned out positive in the end. Sometimes you have to educate even the management folks. I had a gun related issue arise once at a local Wal-Mart, tried to talk to the store manager about it, and he wouldn't budge on his position. I next went to the district manager, explained the circumstances, and it was resolved (in my favor) within 15 minutes of calling him.

There is no way I would ever shop at Bashas. BTW, Safeway likes us... :)

Already have permit but AZ is hot in summer and it is hard to conceal and since open carry is quite legal in AZ, why not?

No prob, I just go CCW all the time to avoid having the tourist from NYC have a coronary, or the just released Grandel member from targeting me....personal choice.
Safeway took thier signs down right after the law went into effect in '94. ALL the malls are still posted, and if you want to have some fun, the Park Place Mall Robison Mays is posted "No Handguns". Carry an AK in thier slung...legal, according to the law!
BTW, WalMart quit selling pistols right after Sam Walton died. His kids are not nearly as pro as he was, so they divested of an unpopular, (To them) market. I am amazed they still stock Ruger Mini-14s...Here they stock pistol ammo - the Winchester White Box value 100 round pack is very popular!

The only mall I have seen posted is El Con. Probably only two or three stores still open anyway. The bookstore at Park Place is not posted and I carry there openly without a glance. I wonder what would happen if I entered through the bookstore and went on in to the mall? Where did you see the 'no guns' posting at Park Place or Tucson Mall. I have never seen them. Am going to Park Place bookstore, as well as Bookmans, today.

Some years back a Wal*mart in Titusville FL had a sign saying "No Firearms allowed" at the Garden Shop entrance .That was before I had a computer. That night I wrote a letter to corporate in Bentonville.Really didn't expect to hear from them, which I didn't.I live a couple hours away from that store. A few months later I was down that way again. While down there I made a special trip to that W*M just to see if that sign was still there or if it was gone. Happy to see it was gone.Even though Bentionville wasn't decent enough to reply via snail mail or a quick phone call,I figure my letter brought it to their attention which got the sign taken down.

Why Wal-Mart dosen't carry handguns.

I use to work at a wally world....
So I asked why they carried rifles and shotguns..... but no handguns...
I was told that Wal-Mart was a FAMILY ORIENTED store.... and that handguns didn't fit that profile....
When I asked about home defense, saying that it's usually a handgun that protects a family at home, I was given a very strange look. :scrutiny: Then I was told that since you couldn't use them to hunt with, that was the other reason why they didn't carry them. So then I went on for a while about all of the hunting handguns that are out there..... :cuss:
This time I got this distant look, like they wanted to call managment on me or something....
So I just walked off fuming....
As I was leaving they said that I could ORDER them from the book they had in sporting goods :banghead:
Freaking idiots.

I'm glad to hear you stood up for your rights. If you are happy and Walmart is happy then all is good.

Maybe because I grew up in CA where carry is prohibited the idea seems foreign to me. It's just that even as much as I love guns and have a safe full of 'em, I don't get why anyone wants to walk into a Walmart strapped while shopping for a bag of Cheetos. I would never say you shouldn't have the right to do it and I applaud you for exercising your 2nd Amendment rights. I just don't understand why anyone would want to pack unless they are shopping at the Compton Walmart.

I'm not trying to be confrontational or a wise guy, but even in a big city like Los Angeles I would never feel the need to pack a piece unless I frequented the ghetto on a regular basis. I'm asking an honest question here. Do you guys that carry really feel that unsafe?
