Nice discussion with Wal-Mart Management

Maybe because I grew up in CA where carry is prohibited the idea seems foreign to me. It's just that even as much as I love guns and have a safe full of 'em, I don't get why anyone wants to walk into a Walmart strapped while shopping for a bag of Cheetos. I would never say you shouldn't have the right to do it and I applaud you for exercising your 2nd Amendment rights. I just don't understand why anyone would want to pack unless they are shopping at the Compton Walmart. I'm not trying to be confrontational or a wise guy, but even in a big city like Los Angeles I would never feel the need to pack a piece unless I frequented the ghetto on a regular basis. I'm asking an honest question here. Do you guys that carry really feel that unsafe?

The location has nothing to do with it. If I'm going to carry, I'm going to carry all the time. I can't even begin to devise some sort of rating system as to what locations are "safer" than others.

Is there really less of a chance of being assaulted while buying cheetos than while at the park with my family?

Think about it...

"They'd absolutely freak if you showed up in a California WalMart armed."

Strangely enough, way back in the early 60's I walked into a supermarket in Thousand Oaks with a pistol on my belt. No questions-- no problems-- no nothing. It's been all downhill from then though. That's one of the reasons I moved out of that state back in '73. Best move I ever made!

the Park Place Mall Robison Mays is posted
I guess I need to look a bit harder cause I havent seen any posted signes at the Park mall. I carry there everytime. I usually go thru the food court entrance. Maybe its a Robinson Mays thing.

If it is, I will bring it up with the manager and see what gives.

Back on topic, I alway see folks in Wal-mart here carrying. First week we moved here (June 00) I seen a fellah sporting a 1911 on the hip. Both the wife and I were smiling and thinking we are gonna like Arizona.

trbon8r - do you wear your seatbelt only when you're driving somewhere that you think you're more likely to get in an accident? Do you keep a fire extinguisher in your house/apartment only when you think you're likely to have a fire?

Third Rail,

I wear my seatbelt all the time because my chances of getting in a wreck are a hell of a lot higher than getting my liver carved out while walking the streets of the low crime community in which I live. For the record, I don't even own a fire extinguisher.

I guess I don't have the proper doomsday personality. :) Like I said, if you want to pack a heater, go for it I have no problem with it.

Do you guys that carry really feel that unsafe?
Nope - not me but then I was a boy scout. They taught me to always be prepared.

AND as trite as it might sound and as often as it has been said that makes it no less true that it is better to have a gun and not need it than it is to need it and not have it.

That said I've got a fire extinguisher in my house and a spare tire in my car. Never needed the fire extinguisher once and have had exactly 1 flat in 38 years of driving. I'll bet you've got a fire extinguisher and a spare tire too.

No offense to anyone, but when you live in anti-2nd Amendment states, why are you surprised when most everyone acts that way? Some of us, and the states we live in, don't put up with that crap. Thus, it's in their business interests to not mess with us.
A sort of hidden advantage to living in a "blue" state is that CCW is largely under everybody's radar. The majority liberal population I guess would never consider carrying, so it doesn't appear to occur to them that some people might do so.

I read on this forum about various businesses and places that post for no weapons, and only recently have I begun to actually look for such signs as I enter various establishments. Wal-Mart? No signs. Home Depot? No signs. Lowe's? Nope. Mickey D's? Nah.

In fact, the ONLY place in the entire state where I recall seeing a sign is the front (public) entrance to the State Department of Public Safety building, where I had to go to renew my CCW. There is a sign outside the door that says "No weapons beyond this point." Which, of course, I immediately violated (unwittingly). I carry a Gerber folding knife, which a National Park Service ranger inspected and allowed me to carry into the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, but the cop on the desk at DPS HQ made me check it at the desk.

Oh ... all the Wal-Marts around here sell pistol ammo. Cheaper than Cheaper Than Dirt, at that.

Do you guys that carry really feel that unsafe?

No I carry and it makes me feel safer......

Tell me these scumbags in compton... is there some type of barrier to keep them in compton? or armed guards not allowing them to leave the area? .... another words... the scumbags are everywhere... do you think their gonna do robberies and muggings in their hometown? heck no, theres nothing worth stealing.... and most of the folks are probably broke and most of their currency is in the form of crack rocks.... You just never know when you might need it.... I carry my weapon at all times.... Period. Its not that im paranoid or worried, Its that I like to be prepared... I also have fire extinguishers, and wear my seatbelt....

trbon8tr,

A couple years ago, I was living in an apartment in suburban Oregon, one of the nicer areas in the state. Low crime, high rents, nice cars everywhere. The type of area where everyone wants to live.

One day, only 100 yards from my apartment, a high school girl was sitting in her car at the local wal-greens, and a man walked up with a hammer, smashed in her windshield, and started to attack her. It was a kidnapping attempt gone bad. He beat her up in front of dozens of witnesses, none of whom could do anything but watch and dial 911. She fled into Wal-Greens, and fortunatly escaped that guy who was obviously meaning to do very significant damage to her. When she didn't come with him, he started hitting her with the hammer.

My wife and I were in shock. This great neighborhood, that was so safe, and a major crime had just happened.

Not long after, a couple guys decided to do a home robbery 1/4 mile the other direction from us. They knocked on the door, and when the occupant opened it, they busted in, and started to shoot.

Not long after that, the bank that my wife and I went to do all of our banking was robbed.

A few weeks later, it was robbed again.

A few weeks later there was a car-jacking a few blocks away.

A few weeks later, the bank was robbed a third time.

About that time, we moved.

But it just goes to show, that even a safe neighborhood, isn't really all that safe. And it can go downhill at any moment, with very little warning.

I carry everywhere. No matter where I am, or how safe I should be. The criminal element doesn't care how safe your neighborhood is....maybe that just means that your doors are unlocked, and makes his job easier.

Just something to think about.

I.G.B.

Feel unsafe? I've had a number of people ask me that. Mostly people that seem to think nothing bad can happen to them in a public place..
I live in the suburbs in a supposedly better area outside of Louisville. A lot of people here hate to admit the number of robberies, home invasions and rape that occur. A lot of the robberies etc. happen in the Mall and large dept store's parking lots often when a person comes back to their car. We've actually had people to ride public transportation out to this area just for this purpose. Anyone who asks if I feel unsafe after reading or watching the news here has their head in their ---. Many of the stores and even my bank have NO FIREARMS signs. My take on these those signs is that they're directed at the goblins that take advantange of or rob other folk so just ignore them. We can't carry openly but have had concealed carry for quite a while and YES I DO CARRY MY GUN EVERYWHERE except in the courthouses and other places strictly prohibited by law!! Most places with the signs can just ask you to leave if they see your firearm and a properly concealed gun should not be noticeable. :banghead:

I pack heat everytime I go to wal-mart or any other place for that matter. Only place I disarm is government buildings or schools to be in compliance with the law.

well, I live in the People's Republic of NY, and I have a permit and carry all the time except where its prohibited by law. And walmart sells ammo here including pistol ammo--its where I buy most of it and will continue to buy it as long as they don't start some silly antigun policy.

As far as people "putting up with" what legislators do and such--I will bet big bucks I have written wayyyyy more letters than alot of the folks that say such things in nice safe states. I happened to be born here and all of my family is here, or I'd move, and likely will have to some day. But until I am forced out I fight the fight to keep our rights on an extremely frequent basis--probably not a month that goes by anyway that some crackpot hasn't introduced some new gun control bill I have to oppose. I'm probably on some sort of "watch list" haha. Although my own personal representatives know which side of their bread is buttered and are pro-gun. Pretty much all of the rural upstate districts are progun. Unfortunately, all of them put together can't outvote nyc. There's a nill right now floating around to split nyc and the rest of ny, but they never get anywhere--sure wish it would...*sigh*

The location has nothing to do with it. If I'm going to carry, I'm going to carry all the time. I can't even begin to devise some sort of rating system as to what locations are "safer" than others.
What he said.

I'm not the one who needs to be paranoid because I have a gun. It's the BG's who need to be paranoid that I MIGHT have a gun on me if they decide to attack.

I'm not paranoid, because I have THE TOOLS, TRAINING, AND MINDSET on the ready.

I'm not paranoid, even if for some slim chance I'm not carrying, for I have the TOOLS, TRAINING, MINDSET, AND COMMONSENSETOGETTHEHELLOUTTADODGE should an attack occur.

But sometimes, attacks occur where you don't have the chance to run and getthehellouttadodge. You have to fight, and your hands/feet/OC spray or other non-lethal weapon might not be enough.

Therefore, I carry daily. It is my usual routine. It is a part of me, my dress, my being. It's not always comfortable or desirable with certain modes of clothing, but it is comforting to know I have it if "need be".

trbon8r, you seem to be extremely well-adjusted. Since you do not feel the need for a means of self-defense you most certainly should not carry one. Be well and enjoy life.

Robert,

I'm not sure how well adjusted I may or may not be. :) I maintain that people are all nutty, it's just a question of degree.... :neener: That being said, I can only speak to my particular situation. I don't feel the need to carry a piece on me even if it were lawful in my state. For some folks I'm sure it does make sense to pack. I guess it just depends on the situation, time, and place.

I am sure you heard about the recent murders in Thousand Oaks, broad daylight, one of the safest communities in the country. What about the recent kidnapping attempt that resulted in the standoff on the 10 freeway, also from a "safe" community. Nowhere is that safe, you do not need to be in Compton. I know I would carry if I could legally and I live and shop in a "safe" area.

Do you feel

Do you guys that carry really feel that unsafe?

Actually, no. I don't feel unsafe at all. I carry a gun because I want to.

I originally got my carry permit to support the people who had fough the fight to get the "shall issue" law passed. As my wife said "If we (the people) don't take advantage of this law, "they" will simply say, "No one wanted this law so let's do away with it." I actually didn't think I'd ever carry. Once I got the permit, I figured "Why not?"

I have noticed that since I started to carry I'm more aware of what's going on around me. One time I thought I was in a situation that was "uncomfortable. So I left the area. I would have done the same thing before.

BTW. At least one Wal-Mart around here used to have a "special order" book that had handguns in it. Rather they still do or not, I don't know.

armoredman - BTW, stay out of Bashas - anti, signs vary from NO GUNS!, in the poor neighborhoods, ie Prince and Roger, to CCW ONLY in the high end, like the Kolb and Sunrise store...
