Please help me choose a place to live, raise a family.

Hey cronk,

In Maryland we do have a number of areas here like what you're looking to find such as mountains and forest(hunting & fishing too). Its located towards the western part of the state (great scenery) and its not heavily populated unlike the Balto-Washington corridor but I don't know about the employment. However, even with all thats good in this state the downside (a serious one) is that many liberals, anti-2A groups, and the uninformed have helped to elect a Democrat for governor who is against the Second Amendment in the extreme! The only thing he hates as much as the 2A is the TRUTH! Tax increases will probably occur too.

He did a fine job as mayor of Baltimore City with decreasing crime! Depending on the list you read on the internet and based on cities of 500K plus on population the city went from #8 in 2003 to #2 in 2005! Currently the city is rated at #3 behind #2 Washington,DC and #1 St. Louis! Baltimore still has about six more weeks to make #1 !

Now he gets a chance to do for the entire state what he did for the city! If you rate the state by firearm laws we're not like California,YET......but I have every confidence that together with the gungrabber politicians in Annapolis our new Gov will try 'till he's blue in the face!

Its now up to us to continue the fight against unconstitutional gun laws rather than throw in the towel. Fortunately there are some politicians on our side so its not over yet!

Regarding the "most dangerous states", Maryland ranks #5 !(wait until the new GOV is done with us!)

I hope ya find a nice place to live, work, raise a family and enjoy the outdoors in your new location!

One question I think you have to ask yourself is, are you wanting to find one place to try to stay forever, or just for a few years?

I'm afraid that the East Coast states will, within my lifetime, be overrun. We have a massive and growing government that espouses Socialism and government control of our lives. We have "education" systems that crank out more believers in that nonsense. We have mass media that caters to and feeds the believers. They see the problems in their cities, but it isn't because leftism has failed... oh no, it's just that there isn't enough of it. So the folks from MA swarm across the border to NH, where they're amazed at the antiquated notions that are still in law, and they set out to make their new home more like their old one. It takes time, but who's going to say it's impossible that, in 20 years, NH won't be solidly blue from the influx? We already know there aren't enough Free Staters to counter this.

Same goes further South. How long will it be before the "blueness" in NoVA spreads enough to start tilting the state Legislature, and passing some new, sensible gun laws to address the Wild West mentality of just anyone walking around with a gun?

I think that, long-term, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, maybe Utah, are where we want to be. There aren't many liberals moving there. Heck, there aren't all that many right-thinking, freedom-minded individuals moving there! :D

If there is going to be a new, freedom-oriented nation formed, it'll be in that area, not anywhere on the East Coast. It's highly unlikely that "The South" will rise again :(

you sound like a nice guy with a nice family,so please stay out of new jersey, you and your guns and your god are not welcome here, but new jersey has a nice over crowded prison cell for people like you.i wish i was joking.oh and if you like cops?there everywhere you go.and so are the crack smoking junkies, but the cop will only lockup you god loving gun nuts.

New Hampshire already is soild Democrat. Except for some hold outs in nothern part of the state.

Montana is also becoming Democrat. Then again it is basicaly reverting to what it was before Reagan. Though Democrats out west are much more traditional, and not overly leftist except in the urban areas.

I think you can pretty much exclude Utah from that statement.

Salt Lake is pretty Democrat.

Alabama......North Alabama has become VERY industrious with LOTS of Automotive, Aerospace, and Defence jobs with a high payscale.
We have Lots of Mountains, Woods, Rivers/Creeks and shooting ranges.
Gun-Friendly State and good folks......

Jeez, you guys. I'm going to have to become filthy rich and buy a home in about twelve different states. Some of these descriptions I'm hearing make me want to pack up and move there tomorrow and never look back.

Tokugawa, I hear you about W WA. I find that south of Olympia and north of OR there are a lot of solid folks, but the politics here are controlled by Seattle, the hippiest city north of SanFrancisco.

Marshall, I wasn't even thinking of OK before your post, but now--on the list for sure. TCB in TN, you have added TN to the list. Thanks!

Please, keep 'em coming. I'm adding to the list so that I can go on the mother of all road trips and scout some locations.

Indiana is a great state to live in. Shall issue CCW, no tests just $30 or so. Can carry damn near anywhere. Also look at PA as well. It really is up to you. I would have to say we need more information to go on. What are you doing for a living? If your a logger New Mexico and Arizona may be out.

The desert is also pretty nice.

I will not mention where I am from since you want to stay in the United States. However MN is supposed to be pretty nice. My neighbors to the West are almost shall issue in their CCW laws. It really is up to you and what exactly you are looking for.

Reno!

jobs, guns, church.
The only place I've lived in that gun stores advertise on TV and radio.
...some things need improving, we need an indoor pistol range, and we need state park carry and a stand your ground law but it's pretty good here .
come on down for a visit I will buy you a cup of coffee

I have been here in Bend, OR for over a year now (moved with family after high school). I could for sure see myself raising a family here someday, small town atmosphere in a good size city (pop. somewhere around 80k). Very mixed in terms of liberals and conservatives, but even here at the college (read: liberal city) I found a huge group of good Christian kids.

Tons of recreation too, Mt. Bachelor is about 30min drive, about a million snowparks, mountain bike trails, rock climbing. Cascades to the West, desert to the East. I may be somewhat disallusioned moving from California, but I love it here, as does my family.

DD, when you go on that road trip we are gonna need a full report. I really am trying to get out also. Last trip was to West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina.
Unfortunately we did not have a lot of time to look around.
I need a place to move a small woodworking biz. (we crate and ship so we can be anywhere trucks can go)

Parts of WV were very depressed, we drove across US 50 from winchester VA to Clarksburg WV, very rough in the mountains. Other parts of the state were just beautiful, although somewhat claustrophobic for me. (tightly wrinkled terrain, no wide valleys.)

Southern WV and Northern N Carolina up near the WV border seems real nice. The Raleigh Durham area of N.Carolina was a clone of the Seattle -Olympia- Portland mindset as far as I could see. And berzerk development as well.
The Shanandoah valley is real pretty.

I think there are a lot of states where the big city controls the law of the entire state, and may come out with some wacked out BS from time to time.

Another vote for the Shenandoah Valley in Viriginia. In fact that's where the wife and I are moving in July.

Mebby I'll see ya in Fishersville <grin>.

I don't see much point to mentioning really, really nice places in bad (or getting worse) states. Like OR... I'm sure there are an absolute ton and a half of wonderful spots in OR, but it's being taken over by expatriate Californians. Heck, California is full of wonderful towns filled with conservatives and conservative values... but they're still subject to the tyranny of the majority of liberals in the Bay Area, LA, and Sacramento.

I love San Diego. I'd love to stay here my whole life, if only it was part of the United States. But if I gotta choose between liberty and the weather, well, it's time to find a nice down-filled jacket :D

I like NC, we have ocean and mountains, rural and (relatively)urban areas. However, due to population increases, land is getting more scarce and more expensive.

Florida

I moved from NYC to Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Not planning to look back:D

Very nice area. Very nice people. Very warm ocean. Downside, a bit expensive, but still beats NYC!

Oh, did I mention, very gun friendly?!?!?!? CCW in weeks, no permit, no registration, Class III legal here. I carry every day, had no problems so far. We have *stand your ground* laws and *castle doctrine*, so the law is on the side of law obiding citizens honestly trying to defend themselfes.

I love it down here! Weather is great! I'm never moving back!

BTW, I feel you, really. I just got engaged, I'm 26-yo. And we both wanted a nice place to live. Florida seams great!

Good luck in your jurney!

Something to keep in mind as you're evaluating your options is weather and climate. Some of the places mentioned have some pretty extreme weather conditions at various times of the year.

South East: Hot, humid summers. Mild winters. Lots of thunderstorms. Hurricane risk if within 150 miles or so of the coast.

Upper Mid-West and North East: Mild summers. Cold, snowy winters.

Lower Mid-West: A little bit of everything. Hot, cold, tornados, lots of thunderstorms.

Southwest: Hot and dry. Followed by Cold and dry. Followed by flooding if 1" of rain falls suddenly.

Now to toss in another plug for the Blue Ridge Mountains/Shenandoah Valley area -- take a look at the climate records and I think you'll see that the weather is fairly mild in that region all year around. The summers can be a little warm and the winters a little chilly, but no extremes in either direction. Severe weather is rare and it's far enough inland that hurricanes aren't a threat. Flooding of rivers, creeks and low lying areas after heavy rains is the only significant natural threat. And if you get an occasional urge to walk on the sand, the beaches of VA and NC are only a few hours drive away.

I'd suggest Texas except we have a hard time meeting the mountains and trees requirement. We have mountains and we have trees but we really don't have many together.
+1

East Texas for trees. San Antonio or Austin for hills. San Antonio has a good job market. One thing you didn't mention was cost of living. I can get (3) 3,000 square foot homes here for the price of a modest condo in California. Texas also does not have a state income tax.

You should at least look at north Alabama, great place for your family, I have been here two years , my kids love it here, good schools, nice folks, i lived in Mississippi most of my life there i had to send my kids to privet schools, public school was a joke! good luck with what ever you do, csa

If you choose VA, stay the heck out of NoVA! The cost of living is astronomical. The Elitist Libs around here are snobby. Traffic is horrible and many people are down right rude. My wife said yesterday that she had never been anywhere where the kids had such poor manners. NOT a place to raise a family if you have the choice.

The rest of VA is probably OK. I'd vote for Montana, Missouri, or Michigan pretty much anywhere north of Flint. I've lived in those three states and they really are quite nice. In fact, if you cut off Detroit and St.Louis, Michigan and Missouri are culturally very conservative states.

take me down to the paradise city where the grass is green and the girls are pretty. oh wont you please take me home :p . but in all seriousness. west texas is very nice. has some mountainous places. dont go to lubbock its boring there  . but east texas is nice too. lots of real estate for sale in texas :D

Southwest and western lower Michigan are great if you can put up with the cloudy and a bit snowy winters. Loved the 20 years I lived there. If you get outside Richmond, Virginia is pretty good. But give us time, we want to be just like NoVa.

try Maine or New Hampshire....

Not all of the North East is gone socialist....not yet at least

it's close to the People's Republic of Mass...but once you cross the border, it's very, very different

I am a young man, recently married, living in Western Washington (California North).

What do you mean? Washington isn't bad at all when it comes to gun laws. Shall issue within 30 days, no approval list like California, etc.
