Is there a proper way to shoot a shotgun from the hip? Is it all arm strength to fight the recoil, or does anyone actually brace the butt against their hip?

I haven't tried it, because I can't think of a way that won't violate rule #1, (keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction at all times).

What recoil are you trying to fight? You don't fight the recoil, you let the gun slide rearward and kinda 'catch' it if you can imagine that feel. Don't brace anything. Hold it firmly by both the grip and forend and when it goes off, your hand slides up the grip and absorbs the recoil. Wedge the stock between your strong hand's forearm and your hip.

The way I was taught is not exactly from the hip. I clamp the butt stock against my side with my upper arm. This extends my lower arm more parallel with the barrel. The gun slides back a bit. Very fast at close range and maintains good control of the gun.

I found it works best for hip- shooters to place it in their groin, then rapid- fire 3.5 shells until the clay pigeons fall off...

What are you talking about? I thought you were supposed to shoot shotguns off your knee while at the same time stabalizing your car while doing donuts and drinking beer out of your beer helmet at the same time

No but really, you still have to have one hand free to turn up the radio :)

Some people get really good at shooting shotguns from the hip. We have two Cowboy shooters who shoot all their stages that way, due to shoulder injuries. One is a woman and the other a man. I've seen both of them shoot the knockdown and then get the clay bird that flies up from behind the knockdown target, all from the hip.

It just takes practice, like any other shooting.

Hope this helps.

I have fired my shotgun many times from the hip..You don't place it AGAINST your hip, you place it ALONGSIDE your hip and grip it tightly with one hand at the grip and the other on the forearm. You let your arms absorb the kick. In the Army, I fired both my M-l and BAR many times from the hip with no ill effects to my person. A 30-06 kicks as much as a 12 ga. You can get quite proficient in that shooting position.. John Wesley Hardin

LMAO!

This is some funny stuff!

Seriously though, what recoil? 3" magnums are about the only thing I find to be a pain-in-the-whatever-I'm-absorbing-it-with.
