Ambodos,
The Brass 1851 Navy (fantasy gun as some like to call it) was my first as well. It sat for a long time before I shot it because I read all the "dont shoot brassie" threads. I ended up cutting mine off to become a snub nose and I shoot it with 19 grains of 777 FFFG. It is a hoot to shoot!

I dont think I would have tried BP if it had not been for being able to get that brassie on sale for $100. Now I have 2 1851s (one steel and the brass snub) and 2 1858s (with conversion cylinders) and I am always on the lookout for a deal on BP guns. a shop near me has a used .45 cal jukar philladelphia derringer I have been thinking about and they also have a 50 cal kentucky rifle. Prices are a little more than I want to pay for them, but, if they sit there long enough he might be willing to deal on them.

Welcome to the club, BPs are a blast.

Dave

Had the '60 for a few years now. Recently acquired another pietta. Haven't taken her out yet.
Next on the list is new nipples from track of the wolf e8fdf457c456ea8138b77214117f1a39.jpg

The 1851 that never was...

I can't seem to get past a fascination with the 1851 Pietta fantasy .44. Not the brass frame but the steel one.

The basic handling of the Navy with the Army caliber is a combination that appeals. Not sure it would gain on my 1860 in any way. But the concept has its appeal to me.

Also a .44 and .36 Navy would be a 'brace of Colts' that could be loaded for a variety of shooting opportunities for the outdoor type.

Anyone in the club ever hunted with the "Navy .44"?

Hate to be a pest but I have trouble finding the correct nipples for these three revolvers. I want to get better nipples than what comes with them from factory as I understand they help keep caps on, are better for preventing chainfires and improve ignition with smaller holes and such. Track of the Wolf, Treso ... doesn't matter, just so they are good ones at decent prices.

I would like them all to fire the same size percussion caps for convenience.

I have
A Pietta 1858 Remington 44
A Pietta brass 1851 Navy 44
and an older ASM 1860 nickel or stainless Army 44.
Stainless nipples would look better on this one.

I would appreciate if anyone could steer me in the right direction. I know it's a bit much to ask for item numbers and such. But it's all Greek to me as I looked at several websites.

Sigsmoker, have you ever tried slix shot nipples? They are stainless steel and they pretty much elimate cap jams (from what I hear). Duelist 1954 (Mike Belvieu) puts them on all his colts and they prevent cap jams for him.

Just got this the other day. "C" series second generation Colt '51 Navy, US Grant commemorative. Appears to be unfired, in fact, I don't believe that the hammer has ever been cocked.

^^^^^ +1

I have a question: the wedge spring retaining screw slot seems just slightly marred whereas the other screw slots appear superb. Is it just the photo (hopefully)?

I'm sorry, but this just a pet peeve of mine. There is absolutely no reason why this screw should ever be removed (and I am not inferring you did this)!

I am guessing that this is the most "obvious" screw in which to start disassembly to newbs.

Again, very nice cased set, sir!

Jim

Well, I don't know about "absolutely" but, if you pull the wedge and it makes it all the way out (past the screw head), it's easier NOT to scratch the barrel while reinserting the wedge with the screw removed (or loosened conciderably )than with it installed. I have to take them out anyway to harden/color them but . . . . there goes "absolutely ".
When I shot bp, I always took every screw out and cleaned them.

PS, it looks like it's been moved to me too, . . . . I'd go ahead and make a shooter out of it!! Lol (just teasin, you do what you want)

Webrx,

I just joined our local chapter of Isaak Walton League and look forward to plenty of range time... once range approved and the warm weather returns, that is.
Neither the brass frame nor the un-historical .44 cal are deterrents. I love this pistol, it's my first BP, and I'm sold on smoke!

Excellent!

They really are so much fun. Black powder shooting is my favorite. :)

I knew that the wedge had a mark on it, but hadn't noticed the screw before. You are right, Bubba apparently attacked the screw with the improper (does he have any other kind?) of screwdriver and buggered up the head.

Now I won't be able to sleep at night. :banghead:

He probably uses the same screwdrivers to open up his paint cans.

Those marks are hard to see but an easy fix if you choose to go that way.

You can swap the screw with the one for the trigger/bolt spring,if Bubba didn't get to that one.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to try that.

In the meanwhile, I picked up another second generation Colt. This time a 1860 Army. I got it for what I consider to be a good price because Bubba had his hand on this one too. The trigger and grip frame screws were buggered, almost like someone bought this one to rob the screws for a different gun. Luckily, I have some SAA screws and by golly they are exactly the same.

Oddly enough, I don't believe that it has ever shot. While there is wear indicating that it has been played with, there is no evidence that it has ever had a cap on the nipples.
