Here's my 2018 production 36 cal Pietta 1851 Navy. Had to snap one more pic before leaving to go back to Africa. I too note, that this one shoots closer to point of aim than my pair of Pietta 1860 Army 44's.

very nice drobs sure like your gun! yep just imagine what all these guns back in the days what they took care of?

Basically, the same gun except for caliber, size of cylinder, slightly longer forcing cone, no cut water table and an 1861 Navy has a Navy grip unlike the Army with its big plow handle.

Uberti has the 1861 done right with a 7.5” barrel. The Pietta is an 8” like the original Army, which for a Navy is not historically correct. I'm big on history but history aside, specifically for shooting purposes an extra 1/2 inch of bore don't hurt nothin'. Mine's a tack driver.

I know that Pietta does not produce accurate 1861 .36 Navies, 1860 Colt .44 Armies, and Dragoons. That said, I cannot understand why Uberti cannot lessen the arbor recess in the barrel lug for a solid fit to the arbor. They don't even have to change the arbor at all. These days it is all CNC with both companies. The programmer just has to change the dimension. I don't think they really care.

I think someone at Pietta reads these forums as they changed the 1851 Navy grip/grip frame in 2015 to more accommodate buyers who wanted a more "conventional" style, whatever that is. Refer to Swayze's work and pics.

I still like the "tail" pistol. Anyone looking at it would know at first glance that it was not an original Colt, but if you have never held one in your hand you won't know how comfortable it is. There are folks that absolutely hate it.

My fantasy Pietta 1851 Navy .36 Dragoon (using a Pietta Navy 2014 [CM] pistol, last year of the tail).

Lookin; good Drobs, Expat...

I like that famous/infamous Pietta tail (lower caudal prognathism). It fits my hand better than that stumpy grip they use now. I’m adjusting though and have adapted my hold for the 2017 Griswold I have. I need to use the 'pinky curl' on the smaller grips. It's working out quite well though and as Lincoln said about threats of assassination - “There’s nothing like getting used to a thing.”

Jim

Once again you try to bring me over to the Dark Side of the 1851 Navy with that "fantasy" half round/half octagon barrel but I can't give in to it!

Must resist somehow...

Out of curiosity, what does Pietta do wrong with the Colt 1860 Army? I know their 1861 had barrels that were longer than should be.

I believe I read somewhere that the 1860 Pietta barrels were 8 inches. Where the originals were 7 1/2 inches.
However I may have that reversed. I'll measure mine tomorrow, unless someone can beat me to it with the correct answer.

IIRC, early 1860s had 7.5 inch barrels and very quickly 8 inch was adopted as standard. The 1861 Navy always had the 7.5 inch, IIRC.
Pietta 61s use the 8 inch. They use the same barrel as their 1860, just drill the barrel to .36 dimensions.
