What do you guys consider a good group at 500 yards

Don't shoot groups at 500...but I shoot a lot at 1k. Have shot 8" with the 243 AI and 338 LM at 1k.

At 300 yards I was managing at the end of my shooting to put together a 2" grouping. Of course I spent 4 hours at the range, and at first It wasn't that good. Once I got it dialed in from the Dirt, and onto paper, it was quite easy. I'll be lucky to do that well at 500 yards.

This would have been a good group and decent score at 500 yards if shots #5 and #8 hadn't got away from me. This is the standard F-Class target for 500 yards with 1/2 MOA X-ring and 1 MOA 10-ring. This stage was 2 sighters (S1, S2) and 15 shots for record in 17 minutes.

That is one subjective question. I don`t shoot at that distance...500yds.
Main reason...........I have no need too.

Side of a barn would be nice at 500 yards.

So far it's a no go. I can't even SEE at 500 yards.

To read this forum all God's chillen can shoot 1/2" groups at 200 yards with an AR15.

Seems to me that tight groups at long distance come from an "All of the above" package. Tweaking the rifle, to start with. Then, tailored loads. After that it's thoughtful trigger time with the opportunity to shoot at long distance.

My old body is sort of over the hill, now, but I gotta say I've had a good half-century of working up to be able to hit stuff whenever I wanted to. No complaints. I can still do okay off a benchrest, but field positions are a lot more "iffy".

Don't know, don't have any ranges nearby that even approach that range. I'd sure like to try though.

But, my opinion is that MOA is pretty good at any decent range, more so if not shot from a bench with bags.

I've shot few 2" - 2.3" groups @500 yards its not hard, just have to watch out for wind gust, but I shoot more 300 yards and sometimes I keep 0.25MOA, just yesterday I shot my new barrel and I had 0.78" - 0.82" groups at 300 yards.
here is what it looks like...

In basic with M14 we regularly hit torso targets at 500.
Never saw the groups, but each shot knocked him down.

Not everybody could hit it every time, but itwas not hard for most.
This was from prone, sitting, or squatting.
No steenkeeng benchrests.

Four or more Tailban under the crosshairs of a US Marine Sniper...

In a pinch..

Three or less.

I'd be thrilled if I could get 5" at 500 yards. However, with my skill level and never having shot that far, I'd probably be closer to 8", which I'd be ok with.

My longest 5 shot group so far is 350 yards, I did 2.75". I was absolutely thrilled with that, but I only did it once, so it doesn't really prove anything.

Yes Jeff that's new barrel on that action ;-) I'm in the process developing load for it, also changed barrel on my 111 model from 270 WIN to 260 REM, that barrel shoots good as well, but I only fired it at 100 yards but I think I got one load which works great!

Hey, General Lee, what load are you shooting in your 300wm? I am working up some loads for mine, and wouldn't mind comparing notes.

What's a good group at 500? I would say for any distance a good group is one that is small enough so that they would all hit the type of target you will be using the rifle on.

For a man-sized target, that would be about 20", which is 4 MOA.
