Hi, I was just curious and wanted to clear something up so that I'm on the same page. I bought my XD about 5-6 months ago and have put about 1200-1500 rounds through it. 150 of that was my Speer GDHPs at high speed for reliability testing, and the rest was almost exclusively winchester white box (some cheap federals I picked up, other HPs, etc). It's a cheap 230 grain alternative to my expensive and beloved gold dots for target practice, and gives me about the same "feel" when shooting, with similar ballistics.

Every once in a while I try to run some speers through the gun too, I've got over 300 of them left so it don't hurt to put my "real" ammo through the gun once in a while.

Anyways, I've seen numerous threads on here or other places bashing the Win White Box ammo, and I'm wondering. Are these mainly for target accuracy issues, or just talking about people who never fire defense ammo through their guns to make sure that it works?

I've shot thousands of WW 9mm through my XD, all paper shooting with no issues to report. They are very accurate, reliable and inexpensive. I would not choose these for HD, but I don't plan to use the XD for HD. I haven't reloaded 9's yet as the WW have always been cheap. 2 years ago I bought about 600 rounds and I'm about out so I plan to start reloading 9's very soon. Through the years I've collected almost all my brass, about 10,000 rounds worth so I have a good head start.

What bashing have you heard?

I'm a fan of the white-box FMJ practice ammo. It's inexpensive and has always worked well for me.

Just the occasional comment about "another person practicing with WWB"

Saw some other threads at the bottom after I posted this discussing failure to fires and such, but none of those issues seemed to stem from .45acp. They work perfect for me. One day when I start reloading I plan on using the brass and making a speer clone with wadcutter bullets for practice ammo, but I'm still in the scrounging brass phase. I've only got about 2000 .45acp shells, hehehehe.

I had one-100 rnd pack from wally world. The rest I order online and they come in boxes of 50 with a styrofoam holder. About 35-40 cents per round for the .45s.

If you don't reload or don't pick up your brass from classes or matches, CCI Blazer is less expensive, cleaner and usually a bit more accurate. I've shot a lot of WWB, but will pick up CCI if it is available

Hello all, RON L here

A Lot of the WW white box Ba=shing came along with Reports that Wal-Mart ammo was substandard! This in yet another one of those I hear from a brother of a cousin who's dad heard it from his aunt stories that usually proved to be nonsense! The story went that Wal-mart bought any Bottom of the barrel ammo WW had and bought it cheap, it's spin off of the Computer Horror stories as wal-mart did buy low based HP computers and sold as top line units? The reports were the ammo had a lot of poorly seated primers, squib loads and many falure to fires? I've seen some problems in WW ammo, but no more than what I've seen in Federal or REM UMC and other FMJ blaster ammo! JUst anothr case of stories gettng told as gospel by folks who don't try or use it but know the stories to be true? LOL I to, have fired tons on WW white box ammo in both 9MM luger and 45ACP and even some 38 SPCL with no real ussies in decades of use?

I have used WWB for plinking & it worked just fine. I like the Blazer 9mm Epiphany mentioned or Federal Champion better though. The Federal is usually cheaper at Wal Mart & isn't as dirty as the Winchester. Either has always run fine for me though.

I've seen people say that WWB is dirty.
I've seen people say that Remington Green Box is dirty.
I've seen people say that Federal is dirty.
I've seen people say that UMC is dirty.
I've seen people say that PMC is dirty.

I've never seen anyone say that any of them is unreliable.

I typically put 50-100 rounds through any firearm I take to the range, and I clean it after every range session. I have never noticed much difference in "how dirty" one or another is.

To me, a firearm is either clean or dirty. If it's been fired, it's dirty.

Do you wait until your hands are a certain degree of dirty before you wash them? :)

I've seen certain shooting range operators bash all over Win White Box and even not allow it at their ranges.

They may come up with some story about it being dangerous due to low or high charges, defective brass, or just dirty. They claim the 100-round boxes are not allowed but THEIR 50-round boxes are just fine. They may even say Wal*Mart buys the rejects as the 100-count boxes. Such stories are, of course, purest bunkum.

Truth is those certain shooting range operators hate to see a shooter come in with a couple bricks of Win White Box because they know they will not have an opportunity to sell the shooter a couple boxes of their overpriced range ammo. The shooter saved a bunch of money buying WWB at a big box store like Wal*Mart. That chaps the butts of those certain range owners who miss out on moving more overpriced ammo. So they create their "Dangerous WWB bulk pack" story and spread it around to the more gullible who then spread it themselves.

It's an inexpensive target/range ammo. It's reasonable accuracy and not that dirty. Not as strong as S&B for example in 9mm. Good brass. Good bullets. Good price. What's not to like?

Thanks evan,

That sounds like what I'm hearing. A bunch of retold and handed down stories. I think we all have our little assumptions about gun-related things sometimes. I know that my decisions sometimes sway to "err on the side of safety" because of things I've read and heard. Remmington .22LR bulk comes to mind. I bought Federal and Winchester bulk boxes to test out and decided that if I was having any problems with those, then I'd buy the remmys and maybe another brand. Most of it is bunk, but it's funny how heresay makes us worry about some things.

My locally Wally-World has the best prices on WWB and usually has it in stock. So, WWB has been my primary practice ammo. In thousands of rounds I've never experienced and ammunition related issue with the stuff. I have(soon "had") a Taurus 709 that won''t run WWB well but that's not getting blamed on the ammo...

Gun shops spread the same kind of rumors too. As you said, when they sell 50 rounds of 9mm FMJ for $15 to $17, they can't directly compete against 100 rounds of 9mm for $22.

Saw a couple postings on inconsistent length of bullets in the same box.
Use WWB all the time for target practice. Only thing I buy a Wally World because of price.

I started a thread recently based on finding a stickie on another gun forum. It wasn't meant to be bashing, it was meant to debunk most of the crap people post online about WWB.

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=562763

As I said in my OP on that thread, I've used a lot of the stuff and I like it. I've used it for decades in 9mm and .45 ACP. The .45 ACP once came with WCC and date of manufacture on the headstamp and was said by some to be overruns from military contracts.

You used to get gun shop commandos spreading tall tales at the local store before the Internet came into being. Now anyone with a computer is anointed as "expert".

WWB from Wally World is my "go-to" range ammo in 9mm and .38 spl. I have no complaints about its performance, and definitely its value.

As 9mmepiphany noted, I would likely opt for CCI Blazer ammo for practice (especially in an auto), but the last time I was able to readily get that brand locally was when our Sports Authority used to stock firearm supplies.

.

The price is hard to beat. BassPro had 230gr JHPs in .45ACP for < $30 per pack of 50. Walmart sell them for about the same price.

I like the stuff for general range work. WWB is relatively cheap and plenty accurate for what it is. And, because I reload, I've found the brass about as good as any other spent cases are.

I'm with the no problem folks on WWB. I reload so don't use it anymore but I've used a lot of it with zero issues. What's with the dirty issue? It's not. But even if it was, I'd still have to clean my guns after ANY ammo.

Dogguy, I saw your post early this morning after making this thread. I subscribed on it b/c we are basically making the same point. I don't think I'll ever stop using WWB, it's just too easy to get my hands on 1000s of rounds of .45 ACP for a decent price with it. As far as SD ammo, .45acp hardball works just fine. Even though I use speer, I'd be perfectly comfortable knowing that I had WWB in the mag. The XD eats everything and always has room in her belly for more.
