After 26+ years carrying one model of 1911 or other, both on duty as a deputy sheriff and after I retired running my own firearms training business, I now carry Glocks. The reason is arthritis in my shooting hand. The frame of the 1911 pounds the swollen knuckle of my right hand and in only a magazine or two I think more about how much it hurts than trigger control. Glocks, particularly the large framed ones are very comfortable in the hand, partly because of the width and partly because the plastic acts as a giant recoil buffer.
My daily carry is a Gen 4 G30S. Yea, I had to build it from parts but that's one advantage with Glocks. Nothing is hand fitted. You just plug stuff in and put parts together. I took the frame from the G4 G30 I had and put a G36 slide and barrel on it. Works flawlessly. Then just to see if it would work I put the G4 G30 slide and barrel on the G36 frame. Ended up with the softest shooting G36 ever. Both these guns are stone cold reliable. Go figure. It is nice to be able to do everything I need in the way of repairs or replacement parts on the Glocks without resorting to a gunsmith. I used to keep one on retainer (or at least it seemed that way) when I shot 1911s.
The thing is, Glocks have no soul. My 1911s had history and character. My other love, revolvers have history and character. And, both 1911s and revolvers can be beautiful. Glocks, not so much. They are service weapons, not match weapons. They work about as reliably as a mechanical device can, but they are ugly beyond belief. Oh yea, and their trigger pull sucks. (smile)
