While we discuss David Petzel...

Here's what Zumbo is saying now.

Thank you all for letting me speak. Yes, I know the 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with hunting and hunting guns, and yes, I promise you I am now dedicated to educate all shooters that we must all stick together regardless of our gun choices, and also tolerate the firearms others may choose to use if they are dissimilar to ours. I will do everything I can, within my power as a journalist and public speaker, to protect the 2nd Amendment and America's gun owners. -Jim Zumbo

.

Ok... I'll believe it Jimbo when you prove it. He's how you prove it. Call Davey Boy out on his calling us Yahoos. YOU try and heal that division YOU started.

You tell Davey Boy, “thanks for the support, but they are right.” Then I'll take believe you.

"... As if Petzal has helped "our cause." Apparently Petzel himself came out against black guns in 1994..."

Yep. I had subscribed to F&S for many years... until that issue when Petzal printed his idiotic, elitist, anti-guns (that he didn't like) article. Wrote him a protest letter and cancelled my subscription. Have never picked up a copy of F&S since.

Petzal, Zumbo, and their elitist ilk, believe that so long as they endorse the communistnazi anti-black-guns crusade, that after the communistnazis confiscate the "ugly, black guns" and evil handguns from the worker peasants, they will leave Zumbo's, Petzal's, and their goodbuddies' ol' bolt guns alone.

What morons!

Even so, Jim made an immediate apology. He did not equivocate, or qualify, or make excuses. He acted like a gentleman and said he was wrong, and he was sorry. Apparently this is not enough anymore. We now live in the era of one strike and you're out.

First of all he didn't apologise. He said he was sorry for the reaction, not sorry he said it, BIG DIFFERENCE! And no it is not a 1 strike and you are out era. What he did wasn't 1 strike, it was a 20 game 0-fer streak! 1 strike is saying something a little out of line, calling a large segment of the shooting public terrorists..... well that is a creature of a different sort!

For 40 years, Jim has been a spokesman and ambassador of good will for hunting. Through his tireless efforts as a teacher and lecturer on hunting and hunting skills, he has done more for the sport than any 250 of the yahoos who called for his blood.

Perhaps he has done more good for hunting, but in one feel swoop he did an enormous amount of damage to Guns rights, and the fight to keep the 2nd Ammendment. I personally believe in giving deserving folks second chances, but you have to show you are deserving. So far Zumbo hasn't done that, he has said a few positive things, but after digging the hole that deep it takes a lot of shoveling to fill it back in. I hope for all our sakes Zumbo DOES find a way to make this right, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how he would do it! :cuss:

Make no mistake, this is war. If we bow and scrape to the learned safari club members who want to concede our rights for us, we will be right back where we were a decade ago. Being polite, honoring the opinions of traitors, and deferring to our betters helped get us the Brady Bill the first time around. Not to mention the NFA, the GCA and the many other layers of federal gun law. If we sit back and try to have a pleasant debate with those who would sell us out, we will get our backsides handed to us again.

The only way to win this war on the legislative front is to make it perfectly clear that anyone who tries to sell us out will pay dearly for it. Not just politicians, but writers and executives within the industry. There can be no more Bill Rugers writing backstabbing letters, or for that matter Dave Petzals shilling for the AWB. To some extent this means a meaner community. It means strong words and quick action. It means we will no longer be led by the safari club set.

If we don't take these steps, we will find ourselves getting sold up river yet again by men who continue to take advantage of their positions.

Here's part of Jim Zumbo's apologia on the NUGE board.

But I want to share a phone call I just received from one of America's oldest and most prominent gun writers. He was absolutely amazed at all this, and had no clue of the misunderstandings on both sides.

TWO of them are too ignorant to continue to be employed as gun writers. After 40 plus years in the "gun business" they have both failed in their basic responsibility as writers.

If you are going to proclaim yourself an expert, you must have some expertise. These duds don't.

$5 says that the caller was David Petzel.

Field and Stream's published telephone number for customer service is 1-800-289-0639.

Please press "0" three or four times to get through to their customer service. Then ask to speak to Amanda McNally in the Media Relations Department.

I tried this and the customer service agent refused to provide her number and instead told me to go to the web site and send an e-mail to the webmaster.

Folks, Field & Stream is owned by Time Inc, yes "Time Magazine" in New York City.

I told the customer service rep that I was going to post their customer service number and that they might get a few more calls from my friends for Amanda McNally about David Petzal.

Have at it -- Amanda can't hide forever.

I have sent the letters to the email addresses at Time inc. I wonder if they've been changed at this time due to the zumbo fiasco and all the email is going into a trash folder somewhere? But at least I tried. I can also say I tried to give Zumbo benefit of the doubt, but his first and second apologies leave me not regretting his dismissal. I honestly think that Petzal is much worse, he's not ignorant, he's malicious in his intent to throw some of us to the wolves. You can flame me if you like,it won't change my mind. Let me know if there is anyone else I can email in an attempt to make him go away.

I think the whole episode has been very telling. There's a rift or at least a disconnect between the elite world of gun writers and safari club sportsmen and the great armed multitudes. We've all seen how the glossy magazines have stopped paying any attention to anything but the butter for their bread. Plus, the writers are getting older and more out of touch. They seem to operate in a very small, insular community of editors, gun company executives, and elite hunters. At least they always seem to be going shotgunning or hunting with each other. If you're remember, Zumbo's blog started out by noting that he was out hunting with a big wig from Remington. His comments were not only contrary to the RKBA, they oozed contempt for low income hunters who dared to mess up Zumbo's image.

Field & Stream wants your opinion on David Petzal

Actually Field & Stream doesn't want to hear from us. But, they have been nice enough to publish their customer service telephone number of 1-800-289-0639.

I called this number and asked for Amanda McNally in the Media Relations Department to discuss David Petzal's references to us as "mental patients". The customer service agent refused to provide the information, and instead told me to go look at the F&S web site so I could send an e-mail to the web master. I let her know that people have already been e-mailing Amanda and that she is not responding. I then let her know that I would publish F&S' telephone number and that Amanda can't hide forever behind customer service agents.

Folks, Field & Stream is owned by Time Inc, yes "Time Magazine" in New York City as you can see here: http://whois.domaintools.com/fieldandstream.com

Please give them a call and then press "0" three or four times to get through to their customer service. Let the customer service agent know that you want to talk to Amanda McNally terminating David Petzal. If you want to send her another e-mail, here's the address: [email protected]

If "field and stream" are supporting the assault weapons ban then Im going to cancel my subscription.

How stupid are these people? If they ban this batch of guns, then in a few years they'll decide to target another group of guns, and so on and so forth until they have them all banned.

No magazine that's target demographic is hunters should support any sort of gun ban.

I don't know David Petzal, his commentary, nor do I read Field and Stream. You can point to a source for his comments about "us" being mental patients?

+1

And please do not post just the link, as the Zumbo affair shows web pages change.

Thank you

For the last several days I’ve been visiting all manner of blogs and chatrooms, which has reminded me of when I used to deliver used clothing to the local mental hospital.

Gun owners -- all gun owners -- pay a heavy price for having to defend the availability of these weapons ... [and] [t]he American public -- and the gun-owning public; especially the gun-owning public -- would be better off without the hardcore military arms, which puts the average sportsman in a real dilemma.

-- Column by David Petzal, "Endangered Tradition" column in Field and Stream, June 1994.

Amanda is hiding because Petzal is about to be Act 2 of the play and the calls/emails are pouring in. We already witnessed the first act.

Honestly, use your First Amendment and public eye to voice your what you really feel. Just realize that you're also going to be responsible for your words. However this whole attack is going to go against the magazine's culture so it has no reason to keep you.

True, editor opinions do not necessarily reflect the company policy, but you don't expect a shooting mag with anti-shooting columns to last very long.

Petzel has already come under fire judging from the commentary on his blog. He has already issued a second article in an attempt to cover his butt and to justify stuff he has said in the past.

Well. Petzal either made a mistake or he did it on purpose. If he made a mistake he best make up for it most riki tik, if he did it on purpose he is telling you not to buy F&S anymore-right?

I cannot abide this statement... email sent.

what gets me is he states he has written plenty on protecting the 2nd, and then later says he didn't back 'black rifles' before because tehy weren't as intigral to the shooting sports as they are now.

To me, the 2nd isn't about guns that are used in shooting sports or in hunting, it is about any and all guns, and he stuck his foot in it again by trying to say 'now that black rifles have a legitimate sport usage, we should protect them with the rest of our hunting guns'!
