History Channel's "Top Shot" on Sunday night

I like the positive light that this show is bringing to shooting in general. I'm not crazy about the whole Survivor aspect of it. But it is what it is - I guess that's what's going to get the non-shooters tuning in and that's great.

However (and maybe it IS scripted I don't know) this weeks elimination could not have been more clear. You had 4 shooters and 2 of them performed VERY badly in the team challenge - they should have been in the elimination, period. I HATED that Kelly got nominated, but loved it when he whooped butt, again.

He's been my pick from day 1 and still is - good luck kid !!!

Kelly was upset and rightly so. The behavior of the red team is a shinning example of how young shooters are treated in this day and age. Especially when surrounded by "team mates" with as much brains as a sack of hammers.

Go Kelly!

unless one of them stumbles badly, now that they are going to immediate elimination, i'm thinking the final two will be Adam (the villain) and Kelly (the overachieving kid). for pure skill, i'm thinking Peter and Blake (maybe Ian)

I normally *hate* reality shows, but I'll give a pass to TS, as it portrays guns in a positive light (they're *FUN!*, something we all know), still, I think there needs to be more shooty-'splodey and less interpersonal crap, had I been directing the show, it would only feature the practice sessions and shooting

That said, I think it' going to come down to Kelley and J.J. both seem to be instinctive shooters and quick studies, and both lack the annoying arrogance that others have, especially Denny, who seems to be nothing more than a "Prairie-Ninja"

If I can get my wife to watch stuff about shooting, ask questions about guns and just shoot the breeze with her over that kinda stuff, I'm all about it. It puts it into context for me.

I'm sure I'm not the only one.

This is a big WIN :)

My wife actually asked about the difference between single-action and double-action while watching the show, and even better she started to answer her own question! She even figured out what the difference was from the context of the show, albeit she got the terms reversed (thought that double action took double the work, manually cocking and then pulling the trigger).

I got her corrected on the issue but was stoked she took enough interest to ask the questions.

The talk about the show being "rigged" is a load of hooey. If there was a whiff, a hint, a whisper of "rigging" the show, the FCC would be up top of them like stink on manure.

Seriously? The FCC keeps TV from being fake? Come on man.

Quiz shows / reality shows? Yes. Absolutely. If you have any proof to the contrary, post a link. Seriously. Come on man.

If one of the competitors on Top shot thinks the show was rigged, they should do something about it. But if (insert name of contestant here) is ok with the result, who am I, who watches the show post-edit, to say otherwise?

Hawthorne has it right: Ever since the "Quiz Show" scandals in the 50's the FCC has monitored game shows to make sure they are legit. The FCC considers "reality shows" with prizes to be "game shows" so they monitor those as well.

The competition is legit. The producers can still edit the hours and hours of tape to create heros and villians, etc, but the competition is on the level.

I have come to love Monday mornings in this thread because of the beautiful balance of member criticism and moderator shilling.

A shill is a person who is paid to help another person or organization to sell goods or services.

I can't decide which ad hom is being tossed at me and the other mods, but I do know that as an unpaid volunteer cleaning up poo flung around this monkey cage I want my money from the producers if I'm unwittingly shilling for them.

I got a better idea, I'll forgo the vast sums I've yet to receive from my masters at History Channel if we can agree to not toss poo about and stick to the topic instead of stooping to insult those we disagree with.

Kelly is very confident, and maybe a little cocky, but he is backing it up with his shooting.

The last shows should be interesting. The cream will rise to the top quickly, there will be no place to hide. I'm looking forward to J.J., Blake, Ian, Kelly competing with each other. These are the guys that seem to have the best natural talent and can adapt and learn quickly.

Hopefully with 3 episodes remaining we'll have less drama and more shooting, but I doubt it. Probably be the same format, but more people in the elimination challenge and being eliminated. I'll be watching, whatever happens.

It appears that the next stage will involve knife throwing, slingshots ... and maybe poo flinging. :D If you've watched all the episodes it's interesting to note who can pick up virtually any weapon, receive a few minutes' instruction and put the bullet (so far) in the middle of the bull's eye.

Pete seems to be pretty good at that. Kelly seems to be pretty good at that. Tara has done OK. Of course, editing could be influencing what we've all seen. Who knows if the shots shown after someone fires are actually their shots?

The producers are getting exactly what they wanted.

With all of you having favorites, and "I can't believe he is still here" types, you are talking and posting. Look at this, 23 pages and counting. If there was no drama, who would care this much and get as agitated, LOL. If we wanted to see just straight competition without any side gamesmanship being played involving the best shooters in the world we would be paying attention to all the shows on Wednesday night like Shooting Gallery, Shooting USA, etc. which focus on that. Are we talking weekly about those shows to this extent?? But here we are reading, bitching, commenting, complaining about another reality show.

Remember, it's entertainment first using the target sports as a medium for that. Only the games are different from that island show, and of course less women, dang it :)

Unless you are a born-in-a-powder-room gunner (or one of the competitors), watching Camp Perry would be as exciting as watching paint dry on Home Improvement. Among non-gunners a Camp Perry show might dispell the anti-gun propaganda that gun owners are all redneck yahoos out of "Deliverance", but it would be duller than "Top Shot".

They had those guys and gal out there for thirty days, shooting video edited down to ten 1-hour shows. A lot of the good shooting technique probably ended on the cutting room floor in favor of the drama between Adam and Caleb.

Mea Culpa: Poor word choice and improper spirit.

Dear Forum Members and Moderators,

In a recent post I used the word "shilling" to describe the support the moderators have shown in this thread for "Top Shot." This was a poor choice on my part. I did not intend to impugn the integrity of THR moderators or the impartiality of THR establishment at large. I intended to convey my opinion that the support being shown for Top Shot as contrasting to the general run of the thread. I was using overstatement to make a point. This action was clearly a poor choice on my account.

I apologize to anyone who was offended by my comment. I am voluntarily resigning from this thread to avoid further discord or embarassment.

Regards,

Lorenzo Rojo

I haven't commented to this point, and I've only been able to read a portion of this massive thread, but I have watched each show so far.

Why the red team continues to treat Kelly like a second-class citizen is beyond me. Other than not knowing how to play poker (and fortunately having an opponent who also didn't know), I really don't see much to criticize him for. He's a quick learner who has performed pretty admirably in shooting disciplines he previously had little exposure to. I've been pro-Kelly from the first episode, and the events of this past episode only solidified that. I think him performing well is good for us all, too. We need a strong younger generation of shooters to ensure that the shooting sports and the current momentum on gun rights don't die with the baby boomers and older generations.

That said, I think Blake, JJ, Iain, and Pete are all serious contenders to be there at the end. Maybe Tara. Between those five and and Kelly, whoever wins now that they are moving to no-teams and immediate elimination will certainly have earned it.

I just wish they wouldn't include the bows, knives, slingshots, etc. And more moving while shooting would be good too.

The ONLY logical reason they are throwing Kelly under the bus is because they are trying to eliminate a better competitor (Kelly) and keep a poor competitor (Cowboy). The fewer good competitors, the better chance you have to win.

Or...they might just not like him.

Everyone keeps saying Kelly doesn't know how to play poker, IIRC he didn't really screw up much strategically, his mistake was he missed 2 cards. In the first round, he went for a royal flush, the right move. His mistake was trying to block Andre's RF before completing his own (and he missed). On the second round, he again went for a RF but missed one of the cards. By that time Andre was shooting at 2s and 6s so Kelly shot a 5 to block a straight flush (also the right move, though I don't think Andre had figured out he should be going for a straight flush at that point).

Maybe I'm remembering the order of the cards wrong, but I don't remember him making any big strategic mistakes.

If TS is like every other reality show - which it is, the competition can and will be steered in the direction the producers desire. There is usually small print at the end of most shows like top chef etc. That states clearly that producers can override a judges decision at will. So far I think it has been a combination of bad choices by the red team and producers slanting the competition. Obviously what happened to Jim. FCC can't do anything about it.

I firmly believe they didn't do it willingly, but his elimination challenge didn't quite go as fairly as it should have.

Instead of rehashing it here, I'll point to my posts on the matter:

Many others have weighed in on the issue also.

In my opinion, the producers can and should remedy that by inviting Jim back for the second series.
