HB5134 would increase fines and jail time for anyone convicted of straw purchasing a firearm

I'll have to look up this bill and see if it defines a straw purchase as a crime. Current law does not. Currently, prosecutions for straw purchases are made on the basis of committing perjury on the 4473.

Edit: https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/5134/text

It does increase the penalties for committing perjury on the 4473 to a maximum of $750,000 fine, 25 years, or both. It also creates the new crime of inducing another person to lie on a 4473 w/r/t the actual purchaser.

A proposal from Rep. Martin LaLonde, D-South Burlington, radically changes S.55.

https://legislature.vermont.gov/ass...d Amendment from Martin LaMonde~3-14-2018.pdf

Proposed changes to the bill make standard capacity (more than 10 rds) magazines, long gun purchases by individuals under 21 and unsecured firearms illegal. Since the wording found at the link above was published MR LeLonde said he would remove the "Assault Rifle" ban and the 10 day waiting period from the bill. (I neither trust nor believe him.)
