Best 'basic' AR-15 out there

man you can't go wrong with nearly all the ar rifles that are being sold right now, unless you buy a vulcan arms or asa, those two are junk,

I've got armalites, bushmasters and model 1 sales, they're all fine rifles,

if your looking for as cheap as possible you can get a chroned lined model 1 sales kit for $450 and either an ameetec, stag, mega, superiorarms lowers for about a c-note,

then essential arms has forged lowers for $77, and the ones I've seen are damn good

When you say "pure AR15/M16" - do you mean "as close to military issue as I can get?"

I guess I'm really interested in an 'entry level' AR15 with two stipulations:

1. Nothing grossly proprietary to the manufacturer, like non-standard stocks or panels
2. Good reliable quality components and fit/assembly

I can probably spend on the order of $800-1000. I'm not afraid of well-cared for used. More than half my handgun collection is used (though quality name-brand used)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've learned more about ARs in this one thread than I have looking around the internet otherwise.

That eliminates Colt, or LMT unless you find a good deal on a used one. I would say Bushmaster, or Stag for your price both are great. As I have said Rock Rivers are good, but if you want nothing grossly proprietary to the manufacturer then stay away from them.

I regularly see NIB Colts at the gun shows for $950.00 here in Michigan.

A,B,C,D, and R are just about all you need for an AR15...hundreds of thousands of satisfied customers....forget the johnny-come-latelies....

Well, I dropped by one of my favorite gun shops and he had a nice carbine - DPMS lower, (I think) Armalite upper, good quality steel sights and accessory rail system, and otherwise a stock AR-15. I went home and thought about it, looked through my gun safe and decided that a SIG 229 wasn't getting any carry time, so I traded it in. The cold price was $850.

Hate to part with the SIG, but as I say, it wasn't getting any carry or range time - so somebody else can put it to use.

So I'm a member of the Ugly Black Rifle Club - anyone willing to show me the secret handshake?
