You can't if you've been paying a little bit of attention. The instant and complete unravelling during last year's hurricane season was a slap in the face to a lot of the ostrich crowd.
Just to weigh in on the usefulness of a gas mask--depends on application, quality of mask, and at least a little training.
Some people that say a gas mask is unneeded may have 6k of ammo! I don't have one, but I don't think it would be a bad idea. If you've never used one, read up on it and try it out. Do it with a friend to make sure you don't CO2 OD.
Then, get a CS fogger and let your buddy light you up. Then take it off and have him light you up again so you'll know what you'll be protected from and don't panic if you get a wiff prior to seating and sealing.
Now, if its really bad stuff coming you'll likely be screwed. But a little preparation never hurts--and its the unexpected that'll get you.
