The G19 is 16 and I throw another mag in my back pocket. When I carry my S&W 19-3 one speedloader in tow and another one in the glovebox.

I really think I carry too much when I carry the Glock...

I carry a G33 w/2 extra mags anytime I'm carrying, which is basically anytime I leave my house. I've got 10+1 in the gun and 2 9-round reloads. Some might feel that's excessive, but it's a setup I'm comfortable with.

No. I pack a Taurus PT145 with eleven rounds of 185 Gr solid copper barnes made by Taurus specifically for this gun. I agree the magazine is the weak link but it is very well protected when it is full of rounds and inside the pistol. I don't beleive I'll start WW3 anytime soon with a pistol so I feel confident that if I can't do the deed with eleven I should have planned better or just not executed my plan. Without cover it's doubtful anyone would survive long enough in a close quarters encounter to do a reload anyway. I am very aware of my surroundings and do not go places where there are crowds of people. I tend to mind my own business but do present a somewhat agressive demeanor on first encounters (I'm ugly as sin, 44" chest, 32" waist 5'9" and near 200lbs)

I'm not being critical here of any one who wishes to carry extra ammo. If that's one's preference, then they should do it. It's their right.

Having said that, while I understand the motivation based in "be prepared for anything", I've often wondered what proportion of self-defense events involving guns actually require reloading?

That is, what proportion of gun users other than LEO's and other professionals, that is, your average person just trying to stay alive in a defensive situation, who've been in a life threatening situation involving a gun - have actually used spare ammo or wished they'd had it because they needed it?

I'm asking this more to judge whether to carry extra rounds, and if so, how much.

Its a personal preference thing. Kind of like asking what gun to carry. Some people think that a fully charged handgun will be enough. Others, like myself carry reloads.

I carry 25 rounds. (To others this may seem a ridiculous amount of rounds) to me it cures my paranoia. I figure that in my worse case scenario (Multiple attackers, and a ways from a mean of egress.) this'll get me to my vehicle.(where I keep an additional 2 1911 mags, and a G31 Mag in a medkit. I never know which one I'll be carrying on any given day) I also, never ever ever want to run dry.

I believe in Murphy. I can't believe that I'm going to hit with every single round. I also allocate enough rounds for both keeping my opponents heads down, and to rattle them by shooting into thier cover.

It just kind of worked out this way in my 1911 I have a total of 3 8-Round Mags +1 in the pipe. In my Glock 33 I have a 9-Round mag and carry a 15-round Glock 31 Mag +1 in the pipe.

Guess its the old boyscout always be prepared mentality.

I rarely carry a reload. I know I probably should, but it's hard to find a good spot to carry it. I figure if I have to reload in the middle of a conflict, I have probably lost anyway. I guess it depends on the scenarios involved. Mine would most likely be a face to face confrontation where there's no time anyway. I carry a Bersa Mini-Firestorm .45 ACP most of the time. That's 8 reliable shots of .45 ACP. That'll have to do. During the hottest months of summer, I carry a Kel-Tec P-11.

Glock 22, 15+1 of .40 S&W 180gr JHP's. Figured iffin' I need more I'm toast. Just ordered a "Miami Classic" shoulder rig with a double mag carrier. That brings the round count up to 46. Hope I never need 'em.

1 if I'm carrying my 1911 in my waistband, 2 if in a shoulder holster (2 pouches on off-side = most comfortable fit).

If my M&P 9MM, no reload. 17+1
If my Sp101 .357mag, 1 speed strip in pocket, 1 speedloader in car.
If my S&W 38special airweight, 1 speed strip in pocket, 1 speedloader in car.

Always. The 3 guns are my primary CCW rigs depending on my mood and location.

Kimber Pro Carry with 1 each 8 round mag in the gun and 2 more on the hip.

Springfield XD-45 with 1 each 10 round mag in the gun and another 13 rounder on the hip.

Glock 20 10MM with 1 15 round mag in the gun and 2 more on the hip. That's for field carry near the border when hunting.

Extra ammo and double feeds.

I worry more about running into a double feed than I do about running out of ammo. Hence, I carry at least one reload, sometimes two. When the new laws go into effect doing away with the open carry requirement here in Ohio, I'm considering a small BUG, also. I work in a pretty rough neighborhood and seldom feel over-equiped.

That is exactly how I feel. I have rarely experienced a double feed jam, and I have not experienced one with my current primary carry or my backup carry guns, but a double feed jam will essentially put a gun out of commission for the duration of a fight without an extra magazine. Even with an extra magazine I would expect the average trained person could not clear a double feed jam any faster than 6 or 7 seconds.

I can typically perform a immediate action drill (Tap-rack-bang) in under 3 seconds.

I hope I am never in a gunfight, but if I am I do plan for Mr. Murphy to accompany me.

Normal carry for me is glock with 3 mags of 155 40sw.
Until I get to work then pick up sig 226, 3 mags + m-4 with 14 magazines.
If doing interesting work usually more.

when carrying in my paddle holster, no matter what gun it is i have a 1 spare mag and if i am carrying in my shoulder holster i have two spare mags.

Glock 26 with a Glock 19 (15 round mag) for reload. If I carry a Glock 19 I still carry a fifteen round magazine for reload.
