Help With AR-15 Decision Please

You do know Mil Spec = lowest bidder. That is untill the goverment wants a hammer or a aircraft ash tray.

This is one of those statements that gets thrown around by people who really don't understand how things work.

"Milspec" simply means that the item follows the TDP. Yes it is the lowest bidder. But not just the lowest bigger period. It is the lowest bidder who can fulfill the obligations both in quantity and quality.

Most rifles on the commercial market don't even come close to meeting the absolute minimum requirement set forth by the government for the M4 carbine, much less exceeding it.

There are some very strict requirements for military weapons. And they don't just let a company build the M4 because they are cheapest.

Milspec is relatively meaningless in the AR world unless you are issued the rifle in the military. Only Colt and FN have the actual TDP and true milspec guns are select fire not semi-auto. Other mfg can only guess/reverse engineer the TDP specs.

So long as you deal with a proven, reputable mfg you have nothing to worry about.

Added: Colt owned the TDP and was the only maker of military ARs until fairly recently when the Government became the owner of the TDP and contracted with FN for some rifles.

i think what he means, kwelz, is that mil-spec does not in fact meet the needs of everyone.

for instance: the guy that wants a half moa ar15 is going to be sadly disappointed trying to obtain such with a mil-spec m4 upper, i dont care how many times you mpi a mil-spec m4 barrel, it aint happening.

however

should a fella find himself capable of dipping below the line of what is the best of the best of the best, it can be obtained quite easily without breaking the bank.

If it actually is certifiable mil spec then great! If not then I'm not going to break down and get my feelings hurt. In reality if SHTF I'm reaching for my ak47 until other wise proven. I don't plan on killing zombies with it but it would be great if it was up to the task. :)
