"Sen. Kamala Harris on Wednesday will announce that, if she is elected president, she will ban the importation of all AR-15 style assault weapons by executive action if Congress fails to act in the first 100 days of her administration."

What portion of AR-15's are imported? It can't be more than 1%. They are one of the few hard goods that are still manufactured almost entirely domestically!

In other discussions, I actually cite the thriving US firearms industry as evidence that protectionism from Chinese imports (something that was inadvertently done when imports of Chinese guns were shut down as part of sanctions and gun control) actually does a lot to keep US manufacturers viable.

What do you base your opinion on about the US firearms industry thriving? Earnings from AOBC (Smith & Wesson) and Ruger don't suggest that American gun companies are doing better than they were three years ago.

Uh, compared to most other American manufacturing concerns, it still exists, which is thriving in a relative sense. And the Chinese gun import ban happened during Clinton's administration, so the last 3 years isn't really the relevant time frame.

Well, as to how she "earned" her first good job after law school, this would be welcome on AKfiles, but prohibited on THR....and you know exactly what I mean.

But look at the Huge quantities of foreign ammunition used in this country (both brass and steel). Enemies of the Second Amendment--with or without K. Harris--would accept any steps which increase the costs of the shooting sports, using any method or high tariff/ban.

These politicians, like blindfolded fighters in a dark room, will keep swinging and don't care where they hit an opponent.

An import ban might help strengthen the domestic firearms industry. In principle, I don't like it, but the short-term loss might be worth the long-term gains.

On the semi-auto rifle side, given the AR's dominance in the marketplace, US makers aren't really being hurt by foreign competitors. And there aren't a whole lot of low-cost imports. The manufacturers just sucked the pipeline dry in terms of demand. Everyone who wanted a semi-auto rifle bought five two years ago.

Now another gun banning-panic - that would juice those profits right on back up.

What is "the boyfriend loophole" she speak of?

From a NYT article: "Under current federal law, those convicted of domestic abuse can lose their guns if they are — or were formerly — married to their victim, live with their victim, have a child with their victim or are a parent or guardian of their victim. The proposed provision [rejected to date] would extend those who can be convicted of domestic abuse to include stalkers and current or former boyfriends or dating partners."

So the first portion (under current federal law) covers what the Lautenberg Act of 1994 foisted on the country. Not understanding the whole "proposed provision" stuff as under many state's laws, that type of domestic violence is already incorporated into statute and makes those convicted of those crimes prohibited persons as well. Looks to me as though the Dems want to add the DV tag to a lot of other misdemeanor offenses to create a whole lot more prohibited persons under federal law.

Not to defend her, but I am guessing that she meant to refer to banning importation of AK type rifles. But you probably figured that out already.

Didn't know we were redefining "stagnant" or "moderately growing at best" to "thriving." Makes sense when you put it that way.

How many AR's do you think would be made in the US today if Chinese imports had been allowed to flow freely from the 1990's through today? How many Americans would have jobs making ARs?

If we wander into pure politics again, not related to the proposed action - this gets shut down. It's already on thin ice. Just deleted some. I know it's hard not to go there but don't.

What I think she is talking about I think is banning all non-USA made semi-automatic rifles that look like the scary guns that the anti-gunners call assault weapons. She is not talking about, in this regard, USA made rifles. That really does not change much. It is time for us to get out in front of this.

JMHO. But I think calling any antigun proposals funny or nonsense is pretty foolish these days. Scary yes. Look at the climate change proposed. Many of the young millennials believe anything told to them if they see it online. Thats what gun owners have to worry about. School shootings are 24/7 breaking news even if it happened a month or so ago. Anything to do with firearms is bad including the police. Don't dismiss what seems impossible or we may wake up with what the title of this thread plans on doing, doing it.
