How did you get your first firearm?

Does the air rifle I got 8 years ago count? I chose it for a Christmas present so I could defend my garden against the critters who wanted to munch on it.

My first "real" gun is the Ruger Mark III Hunter I got this past spring. I was looking at the new ones over a period of weeks, had made a final decision on the model, and we'd gotten the purchase permit (which actually had DH's name on it but that's just because my handwriting is lousy so he always fills out handwritten forms (I type faster so I fill out computer forms)). We go in to get it and find the EXACT same model in brand-new, barely ever fired condition with all the original stuff in the used case for a nice discount. So I got that one.

The only difference is that I wouldn't have put the scope rail on until I actually got a scope. But its not like its in the way or anything so that's a non-issue.

By jumping through hoops and doing cartwheels. I am in CT... I had to go through the whole permit process which included 3 references, multiple trips to the local police station, a handgun safety course, 8 weeks of waiting after paper work was submitted, and then driving 50 miles to the State Police , Three trips to the Gun store because they closed early on me the first time, the next time NICS was down, and I finally got it on the third trip...

Christmas 1961. My dad bought it at Western Auto. A Savage Model 24 .22/410. I still have it and mounted it with a Weaver 1.5x about 25 years ago. The scope works fine with rifle or shotgun barrel.

I was 25 or 26 when I bought a .22 from Sears...10 rd mag semi...still have it.

I first fired a .22 when I was 9.

My first was a 410 / 22 over and under for my 10th birthday. When my next brother turned 10, I gave it to him and he gave it to the next brother turning 10. Years later the youngest brother gave it back to me... It's been in the family for 44 years now.

My first firearm was a steel Kahr E9 i bought back in 2003. I had been wanting a pistol for a few years, and then one day while i was 21, i got my paycheck, realized i had no bills to pay that week and went with my dad to the gun shop. Had no idea what kind of pistol i wanted, just knew i wanted one.

Looked at a couple then my eye caught the Kahr. It looked nice to me, and just happened to be the only one in my price range. The tag said 350.00, which was just about all i happened to have on me in cash.

I said ill take it, but didn't take into consideration sales tax. No problem, my dad spotted me 25 bucks, the dealer went halves with me on my first box of ammo and away i went. I was happy. I had the 25 bucks in my bank account, which i gladly withdrew and gave back to my father when we got back into town.

I still have it, and hope someday to give it to my son. Its been a great pistol and is very accurate, and super comfortable in my hand.

I dont think i could have made a better first purchase, considering i knew nothing about firearms at the time. Almost like it was put there for me. And the fact that i bought it with my own money makes it that much sweeter. :)

I was fifteen (1975) & my Dad didn't really want me to have a gun.....I think he remembered what he was like when he had one! However, my Mom bought a used Slavia .177 air rifle from someone at her work for $15 & gave me that. A bit later I added a Gecado Model 25 & then saved up & in January '76 bought my first cartridge gun, a Winchester 9422 (brand new $169). A few months later I added my first centerfire, a Marlin 336T .30/30 Win. ($175 including 100 rnds of ammo).

when I was 12 my old man gave me his Remington 870 Express. Great gun, wish I still had it just because it was my first. I did however trade it in on a Browning BPS 10guage a few years later. Wish I still had that one too.

My Dad gave me my first in 1958,...a bolt action single shot Mossberg. I still have it,...and still use it today,...but not often. Shot my first deer with it,...as have my son, my daughter, and severeral nieces and nephews. Between us all, we've taken at least a boatload or two of rabbits as well......I look forward to my 3 grandson's using it one day very soon.

I've wanted a gun my whole life. I got married, got a job, bought a house, then convinced my wife it would be good to own a gun for home protection. I did some research and bought an XD45C (June '08). We took several trips to the range, then my wife bought an XD9SC.

Neither of us grew up around guns. We just decided it would be a good investment. Now shooting is our hobby.

I think I posted this a while back, here it is again:

Lander, Wyoming in 1948-49 was a small, remote ranch town of about 2500 people where the Great Depression was just starting to end. As a nine year old boy, I would spend my 15 cents at the Saturday matinee and then go hang out at my favorite place, Spaldsbury's Saddlery and Sporting Goods. What a wonderful place it was: odors of new and old leather, new and old horse blankets, pipe smoke, original Hoppes and gun oil, occsionally a faint whiff of whiskey. Glass cabinets full of old Colts and Smith&Wessons. Racks full of Winchesters, Remingtons, Marlins, etc. More racks full of surplus Krags, Springfield bolt guns and trapdoors. Fishing gear too. Spitoons and sawdust on the floor.
One day a brand new Winchester 67 Youth appeared, price only $13.00 IIRC. I had some Christmas and birthday money squirreled away and conned Dad into spliting the cost. I didnt have to sign for it but Dad had to come down and carry it out for me.
I spent the next 3 years or so potting tin cans, stray crows and riding along behind Dad on old Poppin' Johnny, terrorizing prairie dogs. I learned to shoot with that gun.
At age 12 or 13 I got the hots for a new Remington model 512 at Spaldsburys, so I traded in the 67 on it This was in about 1952. Never looked back until much later in life.
In 1982, my Air Force career at an end, I moved back to Lander to start a new life. Every once in a while I would go to a gun show and see a Model 67 Youth and get a lump in my throat, longing for the days of my childhood and kicking my self for ever trading off my very first gun.
About 3 years ago my wife and I stopped at a yard sale put on by an older fellow here in town. He had some guns on a table and there it was, a Winchester 67 youth in very good condition. Got to chatting him up about it and asked him the history of the gun. He said he got it for his little son but the kid never took an interest in it, so it had been in the back of the closet for the last 50 years. I asked him where he got it, he said he bought it used at Spaldsburys in about 1952!! I gave him his $100.00 and ran for my truck , shaking like a leaf!
I cleaned it up and took it to the range to shoot a few cans, which I did, but it was difficult, I kept getting some smoke in my eyes.
My very first gun is back with me, and holds a place of honor in my safe. Life is good.

First gun, if it counts, was the Red Ryder BB gun my mom bought me to keep the sparrows a decent distance away from the house...she was also great on ammo; would buy as much as I could shoot. Still feel guilty for all the dead sparrows.

Second gun was a single shot 22 Marlin 100 that I still have and was given to me by my father after he bought it for $5.00 from somebody he worked with...an oddity because Dad really doesn't like to handle guns and as a consequence, I didn't shoot it much until adulthood (except for a few holes in the barn roof shooting pigeons).

My First gun was a Marlin single-shot bolt-action .22, It is still a great little gun, and still still shoots DEAD on target.
I got it for my 11th birthday,(and we were on vacation) I went out with my dad for lunch and such then we went to the gun store, and he got it for me.

1964 fresh out of boot camp L bought a 303 carbine for 18 and a coast to coast single shot 22 for 28 dollars, still shoot the 22, the 303 I couldn't get rid of fast enough.

My first rifle is a Romanian AK47 clone that I bought at a gun show in Mechanicsville Virginia last year.

My first handgun is a Beretta 96D that I bought at a police supply store in Chesterfield Virginia last spring.

Unofficially, my first handgun was a friend's Star BM9 that s friend let me borrow to carry about when I was 14. My how things have changed.
