I have several defensive handguns which I rotate. I carry every day and practice frequently be the gun SA/DA , DAO or SA. I am as comfortable with my 360 PD as I am with my Ruger 45.

Of course frequently the question arises among friends, "how many rounds does it hold?"

My personal opinion is that I am not getting into an F.B.I. shootout and in the unlikely event that I need to draw I feel just fine with 5 rounds of .357. I cannot imagine a scenario where I need 14 rounds or more.

frequently in gun reviews I see a particular firearm denigrated based on it's low capacity. Case in point: I love my Sig 239. Granted it only carries what 9 rounds unless you get an extend magazine but really do you need more? So many reviews trash the 239 based on low capacity and in some reviews weight as well.

Yes, I know what if 4 bad guys ....

I'm trying to be realistic. I suppose it could happen but my two favorite carry pieces are my 360 PD with "only" 5 rounds and my 239. Hell if we expand the what if scenario you could argue for 3 spare mags, an AR pistol and who knows what else!!

I do on occasion carry the P365 but the heavier steel 239 feels better to me. And my thought process is double tap center of mass. At least that is how I run my drills. It may be double tap to two targets but never more.

So after this long winded intro the question:

How many rounds? Do you feel the need for 17 rounds in your Glock? Does it really comfort you more or is it the testosterone acting up? Be honest. Or are you comfortable with fewer rounds knowing you are proficient and less will do the trick.

So many fine firearms have gone extinct with the advent of high capacity double stack polymer pistols. Not knocking them just stating a fact.

A few years back there was an incident where a woman was home alone with her children when she became aware that there was an intruder in the house. She gathered up her kids and they all hid in a closet. She was armed with a six-shot revolver. When the crook discovered her, she emptied the gun (presumably at point blank range) hitting him five times. Even so wounded he was able to walk out of the house and drive away. (But, as I recall, he didn't last long.)

What do you mean?

...in the unlikely event that I need to draw I feel just fine with 5 rounds of .357.
"Feel"?

Have you ever participated in realistic defensive shooting training? How many rounds did they train you to shoot at a rapidly moving attacker? How would you handle his accomplice? What kind of a margin of safety do you want?

I started out with a five shot revolver. I retired it from primary carry hears ago.

depend what risk you are mitigating by having it. you could always just keep some extra rounds in an altoids tin in your shirt pocket.

Many years ago FBI was outgunned by the bad guys.

I have participated in drills with an instructor. If i on;y have 5 I empty 5. i never empty 12 or more rounds. I go for center of mass and that is that. As far as his friend what if he has 5 friends? Point being you can expand this ad infinitum. just trying to get opinions. As I said i carry high capacity and low.

Just a thoughtful discussion. YMMV

"The 1911 is a one or two bad guy gun, in a three or four bad guy world."

HOW MANY ROUNDS DO YOU REALLY NEED ?
.

You're never going to know the answer to the question until the worst happens and you come out of it with extra ammo.

If it's a day where I can make a full size 15+1 pistol and an 18 round reload disappear on my person, then that's how many I will be rolling the dice with should the worst day happen.

You could have brought 100 rounds and get taken out before you fire a shot. You'll never know until it happens.

It's always going to be a personal choice.

Lower capacity just means you have less to work with.

I have no illusions about how I’d fare against multiple BGs - I’m no John Wick. But if I *can* carry ten in a semiautomatic (like my P365) where a similarly-sized revolver would carry five (like my LCR), I’d rather have the ten. Would I need more than five? Maybe not. But I’d sure feel better with more.

We do this every other week. Might the OP have searched for this?
Yeah.

How many rounds....

The old "carry rotation" idea....

What makes one "feel comfortable"....

The search function is underutilized here.

To the wise comments of ehe good NCO from F-Troop we can say "yea verily" and stop this now.
