I've spent most of my Internet time at Free Republic today (OK, most of my day-I had to get this election crap out of my system), and one of the big questions is "Who will run for the Republicans in '08?" Many, many people have mentioned Rudy Giuliani in glowing terms. I, for one, am against him and don't think that he has a chance, mainly on the basis of his anti-gun position and the effect that it will have on his chances in the Republican primaries (esp. down South).

I am curious how others think about this, so:

1) How do you rate Rudy's chances for either President or Veep on the '08 Republican ticket, assuming that he wants either position?

2) How will YOU and those you know react to Rudy on the ticket. Also, what state are you from?

Thanks much for your responses.

Talked to a local last night who said the only chance we have is to change the constitution and run Arnie.

(Sound of crickets chirping.)

I don't think so. Other than that, we may have to wait and see who the dims put forth to know who to run on the Repub ticket.

Many think it'll be Hitlery. If that's true, it may take a very special candidate.

Californiastan (the long blue state on the far left of the electoral map).

I don't think Rudy is a good choice. He can be downright nasty at times.

He was a so-so federal prosecutor in NYC. Went after mafia leader John Gotti 4 times and lost each time.

He is very anti-gun.

Granted, he did good for NYC on 9/11 but he can't stand on that the rest of his life.

Didn't Guliani have some sort of affair thing a few years back? Heck, I think he left his wife for his mistress. That sort of thing would be EVERYWHERE if he was to run, especially another 4 years after 9/11. He probably could have pulled off an office run in '04, but not in '08. I still think he will be a candidate though.

Man, I hope the Repubs can get some new blood into the spotlight over the next few years. I'm kinda tired of the same old wishy-washy RINOs always being trotted out. Hannity for pres?? Maybe another Southern governor?

Definitely Rice for VP though, that is a no-brainer unless Bush totally tanks this term and drags his entire cabinet down with him (NOT likely!!).

Jeb said he wouldn't run. However, if Hitlery wins in '08, and IF there are still elections in '12, then I think that he'd change his mind.

How about Santorum?

Does noone like Colin Powell? Is he lukewarm on the 2A or something?
I think he's a globalist, U.N. groupie and appeaser. You wouldn't like him if you got to know him.

Sound Like A GOP Nominee To You?

“I’m pro-choice. I’m pro-gay rights,†Giuliani said. He was then asked whether he supports a ban on what critics call partial-birth abortions. “No, I have not supported that, and I don’t see my position on that changing,†he responded.

The talking heads were pitching McCain's name around last night on the tube. Might be payback for his stumping for Bush in this years election.

Guliani as a candidate would not play well out here in the "Heartland".We have a liberal Democrat governor here who is more conservative than that NY rino.Find a real Republican statesman,or woman, for a candidate to go against the other liberal from NY...

Condoleeza Rice.

based on the current possibilities and what I know about her (which isn't a ton, but enough to know she's a genius and her being anti-2A would be a surprise), I'd vote for Rice '08 in a second.

If we are going to go by history, the most likely place for the GOP 08 candidate to come from would be either as a governor or former governor or a high cabinet official.

Considering the GOP has a majority of govs now, we should have quite a few choices. It should probably be someone from either a red state or one of the "nearly red" ones like the midwest. Picking a candidate from either coast for the GOP right now just doesn't seem like it's going to happen.

Arny - I wouldn't support him unless it was him or a Democrat.

Rice - She's a sharp mind and I like her.

Powell - I like people that are former Army officers. Especially ones who started out at the very bottom of the heap in their personal lives. I would be willing to cut him a lot of slack. FAR better choice than Arny any day.

Jeb Bush - Yeah, I think I agree. I would rather not have to defend still another Bush.

Cheney - Agreed. He isn't going to run again. I still think they should have announced he was retiring a year ago and picked somebody else for VP. It would have helped with Cheney's high negatives and would be the logical place for the GOP to insert their next hopeful.

Here's a place you can go and check out a webpage about each governor. Maybe you can find somebody you like!

And here's a list of the current Cabinet members. Wonder which ones are going to change? (Powell nearly for sure.)

And here is C. Rice's page:

I'd be willing to work for a Rice campaign.

Although I've supported both GW and GHW, I think it's time that we close the Bush chapter in the book of presidential politics.

Not Arnold. If we can't get a decent candidate (and I'm not saying that he is), without modifying the Constitution, then something is SERIOUSLY wrong.

Aside from that, I think we'll just have to see what happens over the next two years.
