Shooting at the range today I pretty much figured mine. Ruger Bisley. 44 mag with Heavy hunting loads. Marlin 1895 Guide gun with Hornady Leverevolution ammo. I am confident I can hit what I am shooting at with either weapon.

Have I fired weapons that recoiled more? Yes, but I was only effective with them under contolled conditions. No shooting offhand or twisted at strange angles, so they are ruled out. Desert Eagle. 50 AE....no way. Although it felt like it recoiled less than the Bisley. 44, the grip shape and recoil characteristics made it hard to shoot.

So I'm curious what others would say. Maybe I'm just a "girly man" because I can't shoot a .500 SW and. 50 BMG comfortably offhand and actually hit what I am shooting at.

A lot of this depends on the pistol as much as the perseved recoil of any given caliber.

A 1911 I can shoot just dandy. A G21? I need both hands to control it and both hands hurt after.

Without a doubt it is not what it was 40 years ago. Today, handgun would be my .44 Magnum S&W Model 29, I am still comfortable with that using rubber Hogue grips. No desire to shoot the .454 Casul or .500 S&W whatsoever. Rifle my 7mm Remington Mag is not as much fun to shoot as it once was. :)

I shoot for the enjoyment and pleasure it gives me, getting too old to beat myself up having what should be fun.

Rifle: I have a Browning A-Bolt II Medallion in .300 WSM and that hits me as hard as I want to be hit. I also do not need a rifle more powerful than this A-Bolt so I'm good. I don't flinch or neglect taking it to the range because of it's "shoulder-stomp quotient" and actually like to shoot it because it is so darned accurate. It's pretty too.

Handgun: I have a Freedom Arms Model 83 in .454 Casull. I have worked up to a load that is 35 grains of W296 under a 250 grain Hornady XTP-MAG. Just as an FYI, this is a grain or two below the published starting loads in the load manual I got with the revolver. This load is flat-out maximum for me, I do not need or want anything more powerful. I love shooting these loads because of the beach-ball flame it produces along with the shingle rattling muzzle blast. Super accurate also.

I do love horsepower in firearms but the above are my "lines in the sand".

I know I am not the only one that says ouch after shooting .357s out of a scadnium revolver, 2 rds then put it down.

A 416 Rigby is the largest rifle and a 454 Casul are the largest handgun I've ever shot. Neither were bad at all. I have fired some extreme 45-70 handloads that were far worse. Probably the only thing I've shot that I want no part of again were some 3 1/2" 12 gauge turkey loads.

I've always said most recoil is between the ears and this is a perfect example. I find exactly the opposite. The wider grip and Glock grip angle soak up recoil better than any gun I've ever fired. Even hot 10mm loads are softer from my G-20 than standard 45 ACP loads from my 1911's.

I haven't been bothered by much in the way of handguns (even heavy loads out of my 460V are no problem). But, my 300WM is about as much as I want to shoot from the shoulder. (That may be due to having getting hammered by Grandpa's 300WBY as a teenager.) And even though I have bigger cartridges in the gun cabinet, I keep going back to one of my three 270's whenever I'm in the field.

My Mossberg 935 with 3 1/2 inch turkey loads is as much recoil as I'll ever want to deal with.

In handguns I've only fired one that was "too much". That was my stock 642 with Buffalo Bore 158gr LSWCHP +P. I had to put some larger grips on it.

In long guns, my Remington 870 with magnum shells was a bit much. The Knoxx stock took care of that, however.

A Super Blackhawk 4 5/8" with factory 240 grains is all I want in a handgun. I've pretty much quit shooting any belted mag above 257 Wby and limit even that and the 30/06 due to severe joint problems over the last few years.

I am not a recoil junky. I don't like it and it doesn't take long to give me the flinches. The biggest rifle I own is a 25-06. I load for a buddy of mine that has a 300 WM on Thompson Encore. I hate that gun! I hate working loads up for it too. I have experienced hang fires and a tore up back after a day at the range with that thing. I just hate it!

I have been kicking around the idea of getting a 338 Lapua Mag, but that 300 WM keeps it on the back burner.

A 3.5" Turkey load through a pump was a turrible amount of whoop. I think that is likely the most I've experienced and I've shot a lot of different rifles and pistols. 300+ grain 44 magnum's don't phase me, I felt that 12 gauge rattle my teeth.

Get one with a muzzle brake, and you'll be fine. I shoot a Savage 110BA all the time, and feel no more recoil than a .30-06.

I also own a Remington 798 in .300WM, and yeah, THAT sucker kicks. I had to put a slip-on recoil pad on it in self-sefense. But the .338LM is a pussycat by comparison (so long as the muzzle brake is on there, that is).

H&R 12 gauge single shot full choke 3 inch magnum or 30-06 Springfield. Hand gun 44 mag the only time I shot anything bigger ie a FA 454 causall I thought I had lost my left hand.

Yeah , hate that rnd. I screwed my back all up shooting that Thompson. I was in a stupid position benching over the hood of my truck and it snapped me pretty good.

Motorcycle wreck in 03 broke my scapula and a couple ribs.

Now 3 quick rounds of 2 3/4 12 ga 1 oz slugs will water my eyes.

You've got me on that one. I don't know. I do know that 475 Linebaugh approaches my "effective" practical limit on recoil from a handgun.
