What's your EFFECTIVE recoil threshold?

In "American Sniper", do you guys think that Chris Kyle and other SEAL, Marine/Army snipers he worked with used recoil pads?
Offhand, have no idea how much the rifles weighed or anything else about them except that Chris hit two insurgents from 2,000-yards.
I gave the book to somebody and never thought to check the black/white photos for this.

He used a Lapua, and maybe the 300 Win Mag?

My recoil threshold? Probably a 12 gauge PG pump shotgun. I'm a strong guy, used to lift at an NFL linebacker level, but wristbones are wristbones, and more than 2 full mag tubes hurts, and I'll shoot like crap for the rest of the day.

I can shoot any common pistol service caliber without issue, even big magnums. But that's my limit.

S&W 329 with magnums

I took my 329 scandium 44 mag to the range for the first time and shot a few cylinders of .44 special from it.

I did bring a load of magnums and I just HAD to try them to see if at my age [ yes AGE makes a huge difference ] I could hack shooting them and then carry them for a hunt.

SO = the first were from the rest at 25 yards and I hit about an 8" circle.

then I went to 7 yards and shot off hand ,both single action and D/A.

In a 25 ounce gun,the .44 mag is STOUT.

I have a Ruger super blk hawk that has a short barrel and its pretty easy to shoot a few cylinders full.

that was not the case with a gun less than HALF the weight of the Ruger.

2 Cylinders full and I was done - yes I know I can and will carry the magnums in the woods, but doubt I will shoot them too often for pleasure :banghead:.

[ yes AGE makes a huge difference ]

Oh yes it does.
At 58, my hands and wrists are starting to get arthritis. I don't know if it's genetic or from years of "abuse" but it has become a pain to shoot more than a few cylinders of .357 magnum. 44 Mag has become almost unbearable after 5 or 6 shots. I am now looking for reduced loads for my magnum rounds so I can still enjoy them. .45ACP out of my 1911s is still fun, as always, but 9mm out of the new, polymer wonders has also started to cause lingering pain in my hands. Getting old sucks when it comes to shooting for fun.

@larryh1108

Dang I wish I were that young again - I turn 66 in 3 months and I can actually remember when I could shoot ANYTHING and recoil was fun and a challenge.

The thumb joint is the problem and I am now seeing a Dr. of acupuncture and its helping.

The S&W 640-1 with 180 grain magnums was my BUG at work and very few besides me would shoot it --- now I don't use magnums as a daily diet for the light guns.

But for woods & hunting I carry the hot stuff and practice ===== seldom with magnums.

Good luck with the pain,I use those padded gloves as it absorbs a bit of the PAIN.

For me, it was the Heavy 44 Magnum +p+ Buffalo Bore loads. Even shooting them out of my full size super redhawk, 340 grains at 1500 FPS was punishing. Didn't matter if I was wearing neoprene gel padded gloves or not. I could handle shooting it about 6 times then I gave up for the day.

ref: Buffalo Bore .44. Yowser! You know it will kick the snot out of you is they say DO NOT use them in SW revolvers.

I want a box for my Ruger SuperBlackhawk Bisley Hunter. 44.

What is bad is that I'm only 43 and my 16 year old son can soak up more recoil than I can. He still has a grin and I grit my teeth.

For me, shooting 3" shells from a lightweight shotgun (in my case a hi-cap BPS with synthetic furniture) represents as hard as I'd want to be hit by a long gun. I shoot 45-70 and 7mm Rem Mag, but the pump gun seems to hit harder. I can't imagine needing to shoot anything more powerful than these and will probably never own such guns unless I get to hunt the African plains or Alaska. Even there, the 45-70 at full tilt will suffice for darn near anything aside from the Big 5.

In handguns, full house 357 Sig loads from a Glock are plenty, as are 44Magnums from a Redhawk. I do not shoot .357Magnums from a light revolver, but they're fine in an all-steel 6-shot wheelgun. (I save the full-tilt .357Magnums for my 1894 though.)

Depends on whether or not I'm having fun doing it.

Three or four 3 1/2" 12 gage loads, with birds falling from the sky = :)
Three 3 1/2 rounds to pattern chokes = :(

50 rounds of 30-06, plinking at steel tragets = :D
10 rounds sighting in a picky scope = :banghead:

1500 rounds of of 12 gage blasting dove in Argentina = :neener::neener::neener:

One round out of a 14# 50 BMG was too much.
