Hello, it's just about tax return time, and one route I am thinking about taking is buying myself and my wife a pair of stainless .357 K frames, since every CDNN catalog I have ever gotten has been literally stuffed with them, they were practically giving them away every time I'vve seen a catalog. Well I checked their online catalog today, and didn't see anything but new S&W revolvers.

What happened? Did people with more foresight than I buy them all up recently? Where else can I look for revolvers like these, looking for used stainless K frames for a good price. I remember CDNN always had them in the $300-$350 range, and a boatload of variants to choose from.

Good luck finding a used "K" frame, or any other good used revolver for that matter. Perhaps you haven't been paying much attention, but the only industry being "stimulated" by current governmental actions is the firearms industry.

It seems to be More "Stimulted" than
when Mr. Bill was the "Head Man".

If you see a K frame today, it is
a fair bet it will be gone later
today.

GP 100s and Service Six types do
not have much shelf time either.

My main store has gone for days
without a used handgun on display.

Model 65 S&W

NG VI,
I recently purchased an old police revolver here in Memphis at a local Pawn Shop.Got a very good price on a 4 inch S&W Model 65 .357 Mag.I have shot it some now and could not be happier with it. I replaced the Factory Walnut grips on it because they were too small for my large hands.I put some Hogue Cocobolo Monogrips on it. As I stated I couldn't be more pleased. Good luck on your search,Chris

It seems these retired old guns still have a following. If you know of any for $300 let us know.

Basically, yes. Also, the "turn in" wave is winding down as there are fewer and fewer left to get traded in by departments. Some security firms and corrections dept's. still use them, but vanishing few. When you see a batch again, grab them.

Here's a local police gun I picked up last Christmas (07) when actually shopping for another gun for a gift. Even came with the detective's carry holster. A steal for a 2.5" 66-1. So don't forget to check your local pawn shops and dealers regularly - some are bought personally then later sold.

A lot of them were destroyed after police departments changed their policies about selling guns back to the public. Many years ago, police would often sell off confiscated firearms once they were no longer needed as evidence. That's how people today own firearms that were once used in famous crimes. Police in most places eventually switched to a "Never put more guns in the public's hands" policy and any guns they take are destroyed. Same goes for old service pistols: unless the person they were issued to wanted to keep it or buy it (in some cases), or the manufacturer will give them a credit for them, they were often destroyed when the departments fully retired them and switched to semi-autos.

Those J&G ones look like the ones Brinks was using...

As configured, not that attractive, BUT...

Most S&W hammers are actually drop-in. They are widely available for $20 or less at gun shows and auction sites. The grips are nasty, but priced the same. For $40 more, after your delivered price, you can have them back in basic configuration. Unfortunately they are not square butt, which I think works best with 4" and longer barrels. But still...

Full disclosure - I rarely shoot any of my revolvers SA, but it just LOOKS so wrong. I would change the hammer...
