Zumbo: Gun rag writer trashes "Assault Weapons"

.

For the rest of us, a warning shot over the bow of other gun writers…
Why, prithee, do you and others here consider Jim Zumbo a "gun writer?!?"

It should be abundantly evident just on the basis of what he blogged that he isn't anything of the sort.

He's a "Hunting Writer," and no!, I'm not splitting hairs.

What will be most interesting to see is how the OWAA responds to this event.

From the comments I am seeing here, on the blog, and on other forums, there has been very little "dividing."

If anything, I see this as being an event where solidarity has been displayed among the hunting and shooting community. People are essentially standing in solidarity against Zumbo and this line of thinking. The only division that has occured is between us and Zumbo.

That isn't dividing, that is PRUNING.

Clarifications wanted.

Dear Outdoor Life Editors: In the wake of the Jim Rumbo attacks on semi-automatic rifles and competitive shooting, answers to the following questions should be posted.

1. Does the Editorial Board of Outdoor Life Magazine support the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights?

2. Would the Outdoor Life Editorial Board give its definition of the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights for its readers?

3. Does the Editorial Board support the National Rifle Association AND the Civilian Marksmanship Program?

4. Would the Outdoor Life Editors please explain their support or opposition to various gun regulations including, but not limited to: An Assault Weapons Ban. One-Gun-a Month-Purchase limits. The Gun Show "loophole." The New York Sullivan Laws. The DC gun ban. The .50 caliber rifle Gun Ban. Californian firearms registry.

5. Would the Editors give their opinions on the state of gun rights in Canada, Australia, Mexico and the UK?

6. Would the Outdoor Editors and writers list, by make and model, which firearms they think are "good" and which firearms they think are "evil"?

7. Would the Outdoor Life Editors each propose a law affecting gun rights that they would like to see passed and enforced at the Federal level?

Thanks for your attention. I hope you feel it is as important as I do that people declare their stances on gun rights and stand ready and willing to defend those stances.

Sincerely,
Blackfork

I wonder how many of the potty mouth and trash talking comments made on Zumbo's blog will also be featured on the Brady campaign's blog as indicative and representative of gun owners...:banghead:

From the Remington web site

I don't think this has been posted yet, if it has sorry for the repeat.

NOTICE: Remington is in the process of severing our sponsorships with Mr. Zumbo. Remington in no way shares or advocates any of the comments made by Mr. Zumbo on his blog site. A formal announcement will be released by noon today.

Zumbo's apology smacks of that whole Hollywood dog and pony show... "I am so sorry, I was tired and drunk. I'm checking myself into rehab and will be giving a big donation to Mothers Against Drunk Driving and I hope I can use this experience to raise awareness of the dangers operating a mouth without a brain."...

In a couple of months though, Outdoor Life will have a cover story and TV episode of Zumbo and Uncle Ted smiling on some high dollar sponsored hunt with free, tricked out tack driving Bushmasters. And many of us will buy the magazine and tune in to see Zumbo eat some humble pie.

I was initially incredibly depressed by this thread.
First, by Dumbo's moronic blog, then his incredibly lame, doddering, public-opinion-powered non-apology.
Damn, I thought friends were supposed to at least stab you in the chest.
However, I take great pride in how believers in the 2nd A voiced their opinion both here and on his blog. We are a minority in this country these days, but far from silent. Remington heard us. So did Outdoor Life.
Kudos and congrats.

Remington Officially Severs Ties

Just posted at the Remington site...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Remington to Sever Sponsorship Ties with Jim Zumbo

Madison, North Carolina – As a result of comments made by Mr. Jim Zumbo in recent postings on his blog site, Remington Arms Company, Inc., has severed all sponsorship ties with Mr. Zumbo effective immediately. While Mr. Zumbo is entitled to his opinions and has the constitutional right to freely express those options, these comments are solely his, and do not reflect the views of Remington.

“Remington has spent tens of millions of dollars defending our Second Amendment rights to privately own and possess firearms and we will continue to vigorously fight to protect these rights,” commented Tommy Millner, Remington’s CEO and President. “As hunters and shooters of all interest levels, we should strive to utilize this unfortunate occurrence to unite as a whole in support of our Second Amendment rights.”

We regret having to terminate our long-standing relationship with Mr. Zumbo, who is a well-respected writer and life-long hunter.

Not real impressed by Tom Gresham's handling of the situation. After just listening to the podcast, it comes across as unapologetic and deflective.

Gresham seemed to be more put out by our reactions as well as arfcoms.

Remington has spoken, and correctly. Guntalk and Gresham had their chance and blew it.

Cheers to Remington - they will be the manufacturer of my next gun purchase.
Definitely will add some of their ammo for now.

outdoor life`s split w/Zumbo ?

Did outdoor life post a statement too as to severing ties with Zumbo? didnt see it ..yet.

Hope he has a strong resume!

Hope Dumbo, I mean Zumbo, has a strong resume!

Dumbo had two faults:

1) uninformed...didn't know such accuracy in ARs existed

2) imprudent choice of words

This unfortunate event should serve as a lesson to be learned by the politicians before 2008. Select your words with great care. We are not buying the old dog and pony show any longer! You can be fired and you can be voted out. Or you can keep your mouth shut and respect our Constitutional rights.

The whole point of blogs is that there isn't an editor.

Well if not editor then at least human "content filter" for things like foul language or racist statements, similar to what moderators do here. Now that I'm rereading the blog posts there obviously isn't because the F-bomb is dropped enough that I stopped counting. Just curious where Outdoor Life management heard it from first, inside or out.

Zumbo has a much deeper fault than that: target identification.

Defense rifles in the hands of law-abiding citizens are not "terrorist rifles." Those same citizens are not, by extension, terrorists. To my knowledge, he *still* has not retracted this statement, and appears to still believe it.

Zumbo apparently didn't learn a fundamental rule of safety - NEVER point your weapon (his pen) at something you don't intend to hit. You simply don't point, shoot, and then say "sorry, I was windblown and tired." I believe Zumbo knew exactly what he was aiming at.

Kudos to Remington for the quick response - I'll buy a bunch of their ammo, and am proud to have purchased on of their shotguns recently.

I think some of the comments were more than a bit tasteless and out of line.

But I can understand why. Still doesn't mean that it's not infantile or immature.

When I'm the voice of reason, that should be a clue that one is rather... out there.

Good for Remington.

The following appears on the original blog: DISCLAIMER - In the spirit of free speech, our bloggers are free to voice their personal opinions. These opinions do not necessarily represent those of Outdoor Life or its staff.

BUT, as far as I am concerned, their name is still associated with this drivel. They also have a first amendment right to disassociate themselves from this. They have not.

Outdoor Life - A Tired Old Paper

(1) Too many hunters are totally indoctrinated by Brady.
(2) I stopped reading Outdoor Life back in the 80's when it was evident that they were way out of touch with younger sportsmen such as myself. They think it's still 1938 and we are all rich dentists hunting game in Africa. They've never heard of IPSC or IDPA or "shall issue" ...

Yup, all terrorist talk aside, I'd call this a tad "imprudent":

"To most of the public, an assault rifle is a terrifying thing. Let's divorce ourselves from them. I say game departments should ban them from the praries and woods." -Jim Zumbo

Simple truth is that Zumbo screwed up by the numbers.

I thought it was worthwhile to give him a chance to . . . I don't know . . . make a statement, so I provided the platform.

It wasn't very good.

My frustration, in addition to Jim not getting it, was with the level of nastiness I saw in some of the posts (not on The High Road). I just don't do nasty well.

What can be learned from this? Probably something we all knew already -- namely, that just because hunters use guns doesn't mean that they "get" the whole gun rights movement. Ditto competition shooters -- the typical sporting clays crowd thinking of "why does anyone need . . . " thing.

How to make something good from this? Perhaps (just thinking out loud here), using this as a launching pad to get the firearms industry to work on educating the ranks of hunters and competitive shooters to the issues of gun rights. ??

Certainly, everyone in the firearms industry heard this call to action. Now, the question is, how do we harnass this event . . . this energy . . . to advance gun rights?
