Aside from the AR or AK series, what is your favorite home defense carbine and why? For my purposes, I'm not talking about shotguns.

My go to is a KelTec SUB2000 in the GLOCK19 magazine configuration.

My reason is that loaded with Subsonic ammo, the muzzle flash and retort are astonishingly minimal, which makes it ideal to my mind for enclosed places in the dark or near dark.

I guess if I didn't have AR's, AK's, or shotguns, I would look at a SCAR 16s a lot more seriously...

FN PS90. I've found that even with a full-size barrel the end of it sticks out less than a pistol being held in two hands.

Plus I'm a fan of SCHV bullet fragmentation.

Aside from the AR, my next go-to would be my PTR-91. I live out in the country though, so .308 is fine 4 me...

Easy. M1 Carbine with a bayonet. It is short, light, and hollowpoints in a .30 carbine are devastating at short range.

My thoughts, too...reliable and very handy, and the only centerfire rifle my wife feels comfortable using.

My old M1 Carbine would probably be my second choice, with the VZ58 in first and the Model 94 Winchester, "Trapper" in third.

But I've gotta say, that "with a bayonet" comment stirred some pretty powerful mental imagery.

I can see it now...

Wife: "I think I heard something downstairs!"

You: "FIX.....BAYONETS!......CHARGE!!!"

I bet your cat really hates you....:D

Seriously though, do you think the added length would be practical indoors?
And if you actually USED it, it'd be front page news for WEEKS!

I think I'd prefer just having an extra mag taped to my primary and maybe my P220 in a shoulder rig if I had the time.

But you get ALL the street cred bro!

M1 Carbine is a good choice, I think.

That being said... I believe there's a few things to consider for a HD carbine: size/type of home, configuration of walls/rooms/hallways, location of home, etc.
For instance, I live in a relatively spacious house with wide hallways. For the most part, I can sling a mosin nagant around in here! I have a decent amount of liberty with length, so carbine type is rather liberal. Ammo type concerns me more...
My neighbors are close enough to wave, but not so close that over penetrating walls is a big concern (note: it's still a concern). Based on that and a few other considerations, 223 or 7.62x39 is the largest that I would consider, but I prefer something less. 30M1 Carbine, a blackout with heavy subsonics, 7.62x25, etc are great if I want something more than typical handgun rounds, but carbines in pistol calibers are great too.

What considerations do you make for selecting a HD carbine?

If an AR wasn't an option for some reason I'd go with an FN SCAR or Tavor SAR. Actually, I'd like to have a Tavor anyway at some point. Would make a great HD gun due to compactness.
