Aside from the AR or AK, what is your favorite home defense carbine

Rossi Model 92 carbine in .45 Colt.

I also think an M1 Carbine with a folding M1A1 stock would make for a decent HD carbine as well.

im looking to start a project soon that consists of a MAC-10 or sterling SMG converted to 45acp and with a short integrally suppressed barrel, this is what id prefer for home defense.. why? lighter than even most 5.56 rifles, more compact and easier to handle, 45ACP will do more damage than say most 5.56 rounds which can ice-pick straight through a target doing little damage, and it loses zero energy switching to subsonic, have to wake up in the middle of the night and shoot something, it would be nice not to blow my ear drums, ya know?

Seriously though, do you think the added length would be practical indoors?
And if you actually USED it, it'd be front page news for WEEKS!

Most of the rooms in my house are small. An encounter with an intruder will very likely be within 5 feet, unless he is polite enough to stand at the end of the hallway for me. Any conflict in a residential house has a very good chance of turning into a grappling match rather than a gunfight. A bayonet is just another tool to make sure it goes in your favor.

As far as my "bump in the night" gun goes, it is a hi-cap 9mm pistol. And to answer your question, yes, the cat loves it. If I ever got an intruder, he would probably be greatly surprised to find a cat jumping on him chasing after the little red dot. :)

I'd pick my M1 Carbine with soft point ammo, and award myself bonus points for putting an Ultimak rail, micro dot, and light on it.

Ruger "Deerfield" semi-auto because that is what I have. .44 mag good for most encounters. Nearest neighbor is a half mile. There is a highway closer but not a busy one. If five rounds will not solve my problem then I am in deep stuff. I am not overly concerned about ISIS parachutists or car loads of MS13 gang bangers where I live.

If I had to pick another, it would be the M1 Carbine with soft point ammo.

Steyr AUG with 16" barrel.

It's as short as most SBRs, incredibly handy in confined spaces, is balanced so you can one hand it when loaded, and has always been 100% reliable.

Another vote for the ps90. It's only 26" long and weighs 7.5 pounds fully loaded with 50 rounds. It doesn't recoil, and it won't jam. Fully ambidexterous, and your wife/kids can shoot it without issue.

I've linked to the studies before (I would link again but I'm on my phone); even trained professionals (cops) have a 10-15% hit rate when they are trying to shoot someone who doesn't want to be shot or that is shooting back. I want as many rounds as reasonable on tap.

Gotta go with the M1 Carbine. Then again, I'm old school... Even when it comes to protecting the family. Sold mine though, so it'll have to be my 1911 38 Super or trusty old 870, neither of which are carbines I know.

Agreed.

While I have a few AK's & AR's, and still build or upgrade with some of the new technology that's been coming out, I actually I got kind of bored with them a decade or so back and expanded my horizons ... There are a lot of other quality firearms out there ... I wish I'd picked up a Beretta AR70 before prices got crazy on them.

Given the general quality of magazines available for the M1 Carbine, I wouldn't trust mine to feed correctly in an HD situation. Obviously, others feel differently.

I would feel comfortable using

my Hi-Point 40 S&W or my Kel-Tec Sub 2000. They are both good reliable weapons. That said, the AR stands next to the Ak, next to the 870, in the closet by the bed with my kimber on the night stand.

Eh, your SIGs are practically the same thing, so you aren't missing much besides the retro boxy look. I built an AR70, and while they are clever guns (more clever than the AK their operation is similar to by a longshot, and even the AR15 in terms of how the receiver is laid out) the trigger group is obnoxiously complicated to service.

I don't own one yet, but my preferred alternative to an AR would be a civilian Steyr AUG A3, which is near the top of my "I want one someday" list.

I have 2 choices (since I cant pick my AR's or AK):

Mini-14

Marlin 1894 in 44 Mag

(since I don't own an M1 carbine, which I think might be one of the best HD carbines ever)

My choice would an AR pistol. If that's considered cheating, I'd choose a Para FAL or an M1 carbine
